It appears that Major Levi Colbert was married to three wives at the same time, consistent with his role as a Chickasaw chief, which sources report. Some of his sons were reported as chiefs as well. The dates of birth of children of the three wives overlap and they were all three, along with several of their children, registered in the 1818 Chickasaw Nation rolls. The first known birth year of a child of Levi and Dollie is abt 1795, for the birth of Martin Colbert. There are three other children reported who were apparently born before Martin, meaning Dollie would have married Levi about 1790.

After serving in the Marine Corps, Kenneth joined the Air Force as a Staff Sergeant. During his final stint in the Air Force, he met Helen Braun in Spokane, Wash. They married and made their home in Colorado Springs, Colo. In 1961, the young family moved to Farmington, where Kenneth became an air traffic controller. He spent his career of 21 years serving at the Farmington Airport tower facility. He was an avid photographer and enjoyed hunting and shooting sports. The full text of this one was included in her Find a Grave memorial. Ada's obituary, and thus the memorial that includes it, reported that she was born in Batesville, Arkansas, which is in the northeast of the state. This location, however, does not match the configuration of family residence. Her grandparents and great grandparents were already living in Western Arkansas near the Indian Territory border when her father was born in Scott County, Arkansas. Her grandfather lived over in Oklahoma part of the time and did business there. (See profile for Duncan Lafayette Terry.) Her grandmother Wysetta Terry, after moving with her family to Arkansas, moved into Indian Territory, and died on that side of the border. Ada's older sister was born across the border in Oklahoma. In the 1920 census (see above), both Ada and her sister Jessie were reported born in Oklahoma. Ada's Social Security records report her birth place not as Batesville, but Bates, a location in Scott County, Arkansas, the county where her father was born, near the Oklahoma border. It does not make sense that after three generations, her parents would move eastward to northeastern Arkansas for a short period when she would be born, then move back to the very same area where her parents and the previous two generations had lived, and their descendants continue to live in that region, or farther west. Concerning her place of death, there is a discrepancy there also. Her obituary from the Russelville Courier does report she died in a hospital in Russelville. The Obituary referenced in the Obituary Daily Times listing (city or paper of publication not given) reports her place of death as Delaware, Arkansas, which is in Logan County, northwest of Dardanelle. It appears that Delaware was her residence, as indeed her Social Security records tell us, but death occurred in a Dardanelle hospital, as the Dardanelle paper reports. In fact, the obituary also reports she lived in Delaware. ---------------------- Ada Louise Terry Garrison BIRTH 28 Aug 1918 Batesville, Independence County, Arkansas, USA DEATH 24 Nov 2006 (aged 88) Dardanelle, Yell County, Arkansas, USA BURIAL Graves Cemetery, Delaware, Logan County, Arkansas obit from online at Russellville Courier, Monday, November 27, 2006 DARDANELLE -- Ada Louise Garrison, 88, of Delaware died Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, at Dardanelle Hospital. The 1900 census reports to us that Agnes was born in Texas. Her family is enumerated in the Terry home area of Murray County, Georgia. Agnes is reported born in Texas Mar 1890. An interesting twist to this is that most Terry genealogies of this family that I have seen report that Agnes was born in Murray County, not Texas. But I have not seen an explanation of the report of birth in Murray County. It seems likely to me that her parents did, in fact, move to Texas, along with many others of this same Terry clan, in the period of 1875 to 1890. See more discussion below. Richard Bates, in his Bates-Terry genealogy, does report her birth as occurring in Texas, but provides no comment or further details. -- Richard Bates, http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=rbbates1302004&id=I05551 1900 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 4 June, McDonald District, Enumeration District 71, Page 5B, House #90, Family #92 Terry, Joe Head W M Apr 1844 56 Married 34 years GA NC NC Farmer Owns Farm Terry, Martha O Wife W F Apr 1847 53 Married 34 years GA GA GA Terry, George Son W M Dec 1876 24 Single GA GA GA Farm Laborer Terry, Thomas Son W M Dec 1877 23 Single GA GA GA Farm Laborer Terry, Fannie Dau W F Jan 1883 17 Single GA GA GA Terry, Dock Son W M Dec 1880 19 Single GA GA GA Farm Laborer Terry, Aurelia Dau W F Aug 1886 13 Single GA GA GA At School Terry, Agnes Dau W F Mar 1890 10 Single TX GA GA At School The birth of Agnes in Texas indicates that Joe and Martha moved to Texas for a while then moved back to Georgia. This matches the record for Joe's brother Thomas Duncan Terry, who was married in 1880 McLennan County, Texas. Thomas Duncan was enumerated that same year with his wife Mattie (Martha Wall) that year and their first child, Jennie (Julia Virgina) was born there in December 1880. Other Terrys in this family were farther south in Brazos County in this same era. We can tell from the report of Aurelia's birth in August 1886 that Joe and Martha moved to Texas after August 1886. They moved back to Georgia sometime after Agnes' birth in March 1890. Due to the loss of the 1890 census records in a fire, the time of their presence in Texas in 1890 cannot be determined more accurately. I have found no entry for Agnes or her parents for 1910. In 1920, they are in Murray County. Note that Agnes' mother Martha is here named Ned. This is the first historical record I have seen that gives us what is apparently her nickname. I had first encountered this name for her in the 1930 census, which I found early on in my Terry research. 1920 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 20 January, McDonald District, Enumeration District 137, page 2B, near Hassler's Road, Hse/Fam #29 Terry, Joe Owns Head M W 76 GA GA GA No Occupation [b abt 1843] Terry, Ned Wife F W 73 GA GA GA No Occupation [b abt 1846] Terry, George Son M W 46 Single GA GA GA Farmer [b abt 1873] Terry, Dock Son M W 38 Single GA GA GA Laborer, Home Farm [b abt 1881] Beavers, Mrs Agnes Dau F W 29 Widow GA GA GA No Occupation [b abt 1890] Beavers, Lillian Grand Dau F W 5 Single GA GA GA No Occupation [b abt 1814] Note the change in birth state for Agnes. Here the enumerator records Georgia as for her brothers. We are told in several Terry genealogies that Agnes married William Dave (David?) Beavers. The families in the area, however, are recorded in the census as named Beaver. In the 19290 census, next door to Joe's family I find is a George Beaver, age 48, born in Georgia. There are several more families named Beaver on this page and the next. Some are born in North Carolina and some in Georgia. A genealogy shows a daughter named Corise Oneida as born in 1912 and dying 1915. We see from the 1920 census that Lillian was born about 1904-5. The census is in January, so she was likely born in 1904. (I have noticed that sometimes this family reports age as rounded up for a birthday later that year after the census date.) This enables us to narrow down the range for the death of Agnes' husband Dave Beavers. Dave died, then between 1915 and 1919. The 1930 census also reports her as born in Texas. 1930 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 14 April, McDonald (Militia District 1013), District 11, page 4B, Hse #67, Fam #71 Terry, Dock Head M W 50 Single GA GA GA Farmer Terry, Agnes Sister F W 40 Widow TX GA GA Terry, Lillian niece F W 15 GA GA TX Terry, Ned mother F W 84 Widow GA GA GA Social Security Death Index Agnes Beavers Born 15 Mar 1890, Died Dec 1976 Last Residence Chatsworth, Murray, Georgia 30705 SSN 257-80-0881 issued Georgia (1965) Georgia Deaths, 1919-98 Certificate #040388 Agnes M Beavers White Female Death 21 Dec 1976 Age 86 years Residence Murray County Agnes was living in Chatsworth, Georgia at the time of her death. The name of this person is shown as Altha in the 1880 census. Some other Terry research sources or genealogies show the name as Deatha. I wonder if this is from some inside family source, or from a misreading of the census entry? Most censuses report her as Altha, which could be the full name, or a short form of Dialtha/Dealtha. Her grave has Altha, but her death certificate says Althea. 1870 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 23 July, Spring Place, page 7, Hse/Fam #49 Terry, William 60 M W Farmer $6000 Real Estate $60 Personal b SC Cannot write Terry, Julia A 49 F W Keeping House NC Cannot read or write Terry, Althia 11 F W GA Cannot read or write 1880 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 24 June, McDonald (1013th District), Enumeration District 155, page 30B, Hse #263, Fam #272 Terry, William W M 69 Farming SC SC SC Terry, July Ann W F 58 Wife Keeping House NC NC NC Terry, Altha W F 21 Daughter Keeping House GA SC NC 1900 Federal Census, knox County, Tennessee, 30 June, Knoxville Ward 11, District 72, page 39A, Hse #745, Fam #779 King, William B Head W M Aug 1857 42 Married 17 year TN TN TN Carpenter Owns King, Altha Wife W F June 1854 40 Married 17 year 4 children/4 living TN TN TN King, Clarence Son W M -- 1882 17 Single TN TN TN At School King, Charley Son W M Feb 1884 16 Single TN TN TN Office Boy King, Oliver Son W M Oct 1885 14 Single TN TN TN Newspaper Boy King, Forist [Forrest] Son W M Oct 1888 11 Single TN TN TN At School King, -- Mary Neace [Niece] W F May 1895 7 Single TN TN TN At School 1910 Federal Census, Knox County, Tennessee, [no date], Knoxville Ward 11, District 100, page 30B, 1033 Alexander St, Hse #565, Fam #590 King, William B Head M W 52 Married 21 yrs TN VA TN Carpenter Rents King, Altha Wife F W 50 Married 21 yrs 5 children/4 living GA SC NC King, Oliver H Son M W 24 Single GA TN GA King, William F Son M W 21 Single GA TN GA 1920 Federal Census, Knox County, Tennessee, 9 January, Knoxville Ward 11, District 99, page 10B, 1037 Alexander St, Hse #202, Fam #234 King, William B Head Owns M W 63 TN VA TN Carpenter King, Altha Wife F W 60 GA SC NC Tennessee, Deaths and Burials Index, 1874-1955 Althea Terry King Birth 10 Jun 1859 Georgia Age 63 Death 6 Aug 1922 Knoxville, Knox, Tennessee Burial 8 Aug 1922 Greenwood Cemetery Married, Occupation Housewife Father's Name William Terry, Birth Georgia Mother's Name Julia Roberts, Mother's Birth North Carolina Altha Terry King Birth Jun. 10, 1859 Murray County, Georgia Death Aug. 6, 1922, Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee Daughter of William Barney Terry 1810-1890 & Julia Ann Roberts b 1822 Wife of William B King Children Oliver H King (1885 - 1912) Burial Greenwood Cemetery, Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee Maintained by Cindy, Originally Created by dhintx Sep 21, 2011 -- Find A Grave Memorial #76895603, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=76895603

----------------------- I am the great-granddaughter of Mary Jane Terry Jett 1877-1897. Her family goes back to parents Miles and Luraney Johnson Terry, grandparents Isaac and Barbara Gabbard Terry, and then great-grandparents Thomas Miles Terry 1797-1852 who was married to Martha Jane or Patsy Johnson in Breathitt County. This Thomas Miles was child of Miles B. or Devil Jet and Hannah Horton. Siblings were Rachel, Annie, Leonard, and Susanna Elizabeth. It is the story that this Thomas Miles left Patsy and children and took off and remarried and had a different family up in Floyd County. I was just trying to be sure I had right person. I was also wondering about the name Devil Jett as I am a Jett but not sure why or what Devil Jett means. No insult but my Grandmother said we were not that old bad Curt Jett's bunch and I know she meant the feuding and killing Curtis Jett. I do not think he was related (well, not any more closely than us) to Devil Jet. -- Gwendolyn Andrews, Geneanet Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 19 January 2019 -----------------------
This child does not appear in the 1870 census. If he was born in 1860 as a couple of sources show, then it was after the 1860 census. No further information was known for years, and I surmised that he died before the 1870 census, unless he was living with relatives, where I have not located him yet.
Date of birth from SS Death Index, 8 Jun 1889, though an exact date, differs from the month and date given in the 1900 census: Aug 1889. This census month agrees with information from Arthur's sister, Jennie, in the exact birth date of 6 August 1889. Arthur's gravestone in Marlow Cemetery gives only the year of birth and death, August 1889. 1900 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, McDonald, District 71, Page 5B, House #86, Fam #89 Terry, Arthur Son M W Aug 1889 10 single GA GA NC At School In 1910, Arthur is still on the farm with his parents. The 1930 census gives us the information of when he was married. In 1930 we are told that Arthur married when he was 22 years old and his wife Lela was 20. That would be about 1912. In 1930 their daughter Joan P is 6 years old. That would make her born about 1923. 1917 -- We learn a lot from Arthur's WWI Draft Registration, filled out in June 1917: Arthur Wiley Terry b 6 August 1889, Dalton, Georgia Draft objections: "Religious conscientious scruples" Farmer, address Marlow, Stephens, Oklahoma Tall, Brown eyes, Dark hair Registered in Richland Precinct 1, Stephens, Oklahoma, 15 June 1917 First of all we find he states his town of birth, which I have not seen before in any source. This was the first source for any town of birth for any of Thomas Duncan and Mattie's children. The town is Dalton, which is in Whitfield County, Georgia, not Murray. Murray County is the only location in Georgia I otherwise find associated with the Terrys. Dalton is about 4 or 5 miles into Whitfield form the Murray County line. I found that Whitfield County was created out of the original Murray County, which was itself a creation in 1832 out of Cherokee County. I do not have enough information about the specific location of the Terry family to know if some of the children besides Arthur were born in territory that was actually by that time designated as Whitfield County. In each census they are reported as living within Murray County. In 1920, Arthur is no longer farming, as reported in his WWI Draft Registration in 1917, but both he and Lela are working in the town of Marlow. He is in a grocery store while she is a sales person in a dry goods store. 1920 Federal Census, Stephens County, Oklahoma, 29 January, Marlow, District 257, page 14A, Hse #467, Fam #578 Terry, A W Head M W 30 GA GA TX Salesman, grocery store Terry, Lela Wife F W 26 TX TN TX Saleswoman, Dry goods store Note that Arthur's mother is reported as born in Texas, not North Carolina. The 1930 census, where Arthur first is married, reports his as 35, only 5 years older than the 1920 report.. The census, taken in April 1930, would make him born in 1894. According to the 1900 census and the family information, Arthur's age in April 1930 should have been 38 or 39. Likewise his wife's birth year differs from that reported on her gravestone in the Marlow Cemetery. Lela is reported as 33 years old, which would make her birth year 1896, but her grave says she was born in 1893. That makes a 3-year gap. According to the birth date on her gravestone, Lela should have been 36 or 37. 1930 Federal Census, Stephens County, Oklahoma, 18 April, Richland, District 22, page 10A, Hse #181, Fam #182 Terry, Arthur W Head M W 35 married at age 22 GA GA NC Terry, Lela Wife F W 33 married at age 20 TX TN USA Terry, Joan Daughter F W 6 OK GA TX 1940 Federal Census, Stephens County, Oklahoma, 4 April, Marlow Ward 1, District 69-18, page 3B, 207 North 2nd, Hse #58, Owns $1000 Terry, Arthur Head F W 50 Married Grade H4 b Georgia Denton, Comanche Co OK in 1935 WPA TImekeeper [b abt 1890] Terry, Lela Wife F W 47 Married Grade H4 b Texas Denton, Comanche Co OK in 1935 Housework [b abt 1893] Terry, Joan Wife F W 16 Single Grade H2 b Texas Denton, Comanche Co OK in 1935 Housework [b abt 1924] SSDI Broderbund Archive #110, Vol. 2, Ed. 6, and online version Arthur Terry b 6 Aug 1889 d Oct 1968 Last Residence Marlow, Stephens, Oklahoma SSN 440-22-1427 issued Oklahoma (Before 1951) Marlow (Oklahoma) Cemetery List Terry, Arthur W 1889 - 1968 Lela 1893 - 1973 -- RootsWeb, http://www.rootsweb.com/~okstephe/MarlowCem2.txt The grave has only the year of birth and death.
