Notes for Chester Hugh TERRY

I found a fairly extensive Terry genealogy that includes several photos and
records, reporting Hugh Chester terry as the son of James Hugh Chester Terry
(1899 - 1971) and Jessie Opal Cunningham (1904 - 1968). The genealogy
includes a photo that has both Hugh (Chester) and Chess ( James Hugh).

As indicated above, some genealogies have his name as Clarence Clyde.
However, there is a Clyde Walker Terry buried in the family cemetery. This
may indicate that Clyde and Clarence were different individuals, since the
birth dates don't match. From the birth date on his grave and death
certificate, Clyde Walker Terry would have been about 15 at the 1900 census.

At only 15, it seems he should have been enumerated in the household alone
with the other children. The oldest there is Clarence, born in 1891. This
seems to support the idea that they are the same. If so, then this child had
three given names: Clarence Clyde Walker.

The birth date on the grave of Clyde Walker Terry fails to match with the
reported birth date from family sources for Clarence (Clarence Clyde), with
the 1900 age of 9. The grave says he was born in March 1885. This is 6 years
older than the 1900 census indicates. A date in 1891 is reported by some
genealogies, saying May 1891 instead of March 1885. Clyde Walker Terry's
death certificate is different still, reporting 17 March 1884. There was a
lot of guess work going on with this family.

There were two separate enumerations of this family for 1910. Cochise is in
the southeastern corner of the state. But Ida and her children were also
enumerated in the Gila County near the center of the state, where we later
find records of their presence. All the children and their ages match. Here
Ida is the Head of the home. No husband is reported, but she is reported as
married for 13 years, not divorced as in the Cochise County report.

Note that this report correctly reports Arizona as a Territory (not so noted
in the Cochise County record). Arizona became a state on 14 February 1912.

Notes for Clarice Mabel TERRY

I have a memory that one of the sisters of my grandmother Julia Virginia
Jenkins was named Clarice. I have found no documentation indicating what her
middle name was. Social Security records have her name as Clarice Lewis.

Earlier research for the family had indicated the 1910 census recorded her
name as Gladys. After I was able to view a copy of the original record, I
saw that this was a misreading of the sloppy writing, overwritten by the
descending letters from the above entry. The name is actually Claris, which
can be seen as a spelling of the name Clarice.

I do not remember ever visiting Clarice and her family, even though she lived
not far from her sister, my grandmother Julia Virginia Jenkins, in Chickasha.
We would drive about 3 hours from Quanah, Texas, to visit my grandparents in
Chickasha. I do not remember knowing that she had relatives in Marlow, about
another hour west. We did on occasion visit relatives of my mother in the
Green family in Marlow.

Clarice is recorded in the census with her family in 1900 in Murray County,
Georgia, where she was born, and in 1910 in Stephens County, Oklahoma.

Clarice married Bert Earl Lewis, sometime before September 1918, when she is
reproted by naem as his wife, when Bert regiistered for the WWI draft. In
1920, Clarice and Bert Lewis are living with her parents on their farm near
Marlow, Oklahoma.

But the enumerator has confused the names, apparently taking Louis (Lewis) as
Clarice's first name, or miswriting it. But he adds an extra letter or loop
so that her name Louis is even misspelled. Maybe he was trying to turn
Lewis/Louis into Louise? Even worse, their son Terry Stanton, is reported as
a girl here. The child's name was probably a further cause for confusion,
since they named him Terry, the surname of the household.

Obituary of Clarice Terry Cavin

------------------
Fresno
Clarice Cavin
1932-2010

July 14, 2010
Clarice Mary Beebe Cavin died on June 25, 2010, in Napa, surrounded by her
family.

She is survived by her two sons, Scott Beebe of Fairfield (his wife, JoAnn,
and their three children, Geoffrey Beebe, Michelle Brewer and Melissa
Ermitano, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren) and Mark
Beebe of St. Helena (and his wife Tracee Beebe and son Drew).

A resident of Napa for the last 10 years, she was born on Dec. 2, 1932, in Los
Angeles. She graduated from Los Angeles High School and married Grant Beebe in
1952. They settled in Fresno, where her two sons were born and where she
worked for the county assessor’s office.

In later years, she married Tom Cavin and they moved to Belmont, where she
worked for Ampex. They moved to Napa in 1969 and Clarice began what became a
28-year career of working at the Veterans Home in Yountville, where she
achieved the title of estates officer.

When she retired in 1997, she traveled widely, taking trips to Europe, Alaska,
Hawaii, Mexico and Canada. She enjoyed watching old movies, musical theater
and listening to classical music. She was also a member of the Native
Californian Society. After living in Suisun for some years, she moved back to
Napa in 2000. She was also a car enthusiast, proud of her first car, a 1947
Studebaker; she also was proud of her 1967 lime-green Mustang. She was
preceded in death by her brothers, Bill Terry and Claude Terry, husbands Grant
Beebe and Tom Cavin, and granddaughter Mary Pann.

Burial and memorial arrangements are private. Donations are suggested to the
American Cancer Society.

Notes for Cyrus Lewis TERRY

Cyrus Lewis Terry is well-documented under forms of his full name. In the
Georgia Death Index, he is listed as Cyrus L Terry, death date 22 January 1848
in Murray county, Georgia, where he lived all his life.

In his WWI draft registration, he was listed and signed his full name Cyrus
Lewis Terry. In a couple of censuses, he is listed as Louis Terry, indicating
he went by the name Louis (Lewis) at times.

1900 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 4 June, McDonald District,

In the census of 1910 for McDonald District in Murray County, he is listed as
Cyrus, while his father is listed as Louis W Terry. This must be an error. I
have found no other indication that the elder Cyrus had another name beginning
with a W. Family genealogies also list him as Cyrus Lewis Terry.

His father is also called Cyrus Lewis in family genealogies, and one genealogy
lists the younger CL as Cyrus Lewis Jr. In the 1920 census, we find Louis
Terry, age 74, with his wife Emily (Emily Jones Bates Terry) and their single
son, 38-year-old Cyrus. I have not yet (December 2007) found full details,
but I expect this son was also called Cyrus Lewis.

These ages in the three censuses give us possible years of birth 1880, 1881
and 1882.

Two family genealogies, by Kaye Nicholson Richard Bates, report that Cyrus
Lewis Jr was born on 8 September 1882. I found, however, that his birth date
on his WWI registration was given as 8 September 1880, as shown above. And
his age is given as a matching 38 in September 1918. This fits with his age
in the 1910 census, where his age is given as 25. Since Cyrus gave the birth
date himself for the WWI registration, you would think that was correct, but
someone in the family disagreed. His gravestone reports his birth date as 8
September 1882, which is reflected in the reported date of death in the Bates
and Nicholson genealogies. I have not seen his birth certificate.

The date in the genealogies is supported by the 1920 census, in which Cyrus is
reported as 38 years old! The same age he gave two years before when he
registered for the draft! Thsi is another example of the cultural fact that
in that era ages and otrher objective details we vlaue now wee not so much in
focus.

Here is a transcription from Cyrus' grave, from a photo posted on Find A
Grave.

The picture was complicated further when the 1940 census was released. Cyrus
is reported as 52 years old, meaning he would have been born in 1888. This is
only 3 years older than the reported age in 1930. His age should have been
around 60-62.

In the 1870 census for Murray County, Georgia, there are four Terry households
in a row, in the 1013th Militia District near Spring Place. On page 7, first
listed is Lewis S Terry (for Lewis Sirus, meaning Cyrus Lewis) and his wife
Emily Jones Bates and their family. In the next two houses we find Joseph and
Martha Terry and William and Julia A Terry. Lewis and Emily have only one
child, 1-year-old Douglas.

In 1880 there are four Terry households in a row, in Murray County, Georgia,
where the family have lived for a couple of generations. They are living in
McDonald Township. Cyrus L Terry and wife "Emely J" live with their children
in house #259, and are listed as Family #268.

House #260/Family #269 are John R Terry and wife Catherine and family. House
#261/Family #270 are William J Terry, age 36, and wife Martha O and family.
There is one house between William and elder William, age 69, and wife Julie
Ann ("July Ann"), with other children in their home.

In 1900 Cyrus is living next door to his brother Duncan (Thomas Duncan) still
in Murray County, Georgia, and 4 houses down from his brother Joe (William
Joseph). This census included the month and year of birth. Cyrus' birth date
is reported as Jan 1847, a year different from the Terry Family source cited
here.

Most of the family remained where they were all their lives. One sister Mary
married and moved to Whitfield County, Georgia. Duncan, however, went west,
like two other members of the Terry family. Duncan apparently moved straight
to Marlow, Chickasaw Nation. (Marlow became the county seat of Stephens
County, Oklahoma, at the creation of the state in 1907.)

Their cousin Duncan Lafayette Terry, moved to western Arkansas, then across
the border in to Oklahoma. An uncle Joseph Lewis Terry went to North Texas.

In 1910 Cyrus is reported in the census as Louis W. In 1920 he also
inexplicably appears as Louis W.

Jennie's age reports and birth dates vary wildly in the sources. Here she is
age 29, but her birth date reported in 1900 was Oct 1876, and in the 1800
census she was reported as already 7 years old (born 1873)!

In 1920, we find for the first time (Cyrus) Louis is listed with some
occupation other than Farmer. He is a merchant with a general store. His son
Cyrus is the Farmer.

Richard Bates, in his Terry Genealogy, reports that Cyrus Lewis (born 1846)
died 29 May 1925 in Murray County, and is buried in Hassler's Cemetery. The
1930 census reports that Emily is a widow, living with her two sons Cyrus and
William.

In 1930 Cyrus Lewis Jr is still single and his widowed mother Emily is living
with him, still in the same location, living next door to Emily's son Grover C
Terry and his family. Cyrus and Grover's brother William O is also still
single at 39 and living with Cyrus and Emily.

Notes for Dianna Catherine TERRY

William Terry 39 M Farmer $1175 Real Estate SC [born abt 1811]
Jula [Julia] A Terry 26 F NC [born abt 1824]
Dianna Terry 10 F GA [born abt 1840]

Note the spelling of her name in the census. Terry family genealogies spell
her name Deanna, although one spells it Diannah. Deanna Terry, reported by
Terry family sources to have married a Martin Keith, matches the wife of M L
Keith in the 1860 Murray County, Georgia, census. M L's wife in the census,
however, is reported as Catherine. It could be that Deanna's full name was
Deanna Catherine.

In 2014, I found a photo of Dianna in my grandmother's photos. My grandmother
was Julia Virginia (Jennie) Terry Jenkins. She was the oldest child of
Dianna's brother Thomas Duncan Terry. In her photos given to me after the
death of her son, my father, was a photo of Jennie's mother Mattie Wall Terry
with Dianna. Jennie had written on the back:
"Mother feeding chickens --- Dianna."

Perhaps this was the way her family spelled her Aunt Dianna's name. Because
Mattie and Dianana are together in the photo, this must before Thomas and
Mattie moved from Murray County, Georgia in late 1900. Dianna and her husband
Martin Lafayette Keith did not move to Indian Territory with Thomas and
Mattie, but did move to Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The M L Keith who married Catherine is the son of Martin and Jane Keith who
were living about three houses from M L in Georgia Militia District 1013 in
1860.

1860 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 30 July, Militia District 1013,

Martin Keith 68 M Farmer $420 Real Estate $3745 Personal born Virginia [abt
1792]
Jane Keith 63 F born South Carolina [abt 1797]

Some genealogies reporting on the Keith lineage have the father of Martin and
John B Keith as Joel Martin or Joel Mackey Keith, and his mother as Mary Jane
Roper. The birth information of Mary Jane matches this Jane Keith. However,
J M is reported as born 1799, while Martin Keith is reported by census age as
born in 1792. Wes Covey reports the birth state of Joel Mackey Keith as South
Carolina. But the censuses of 1850 and 1860 report that Martin Keith (married
to Jane) was born in Virginia. The census agrees with Covey that Jane (and
Mary Jane Roper) were born in South Carolina.

Living next door is a family named McClure, and next to the McClures is a
Stovall family. I know the Stovall name from a listing of family members
given to my mother by my grandmother, Julia Virginia Terry in the 1950s.
Among names of some of her brothers and others was the name Rondell Stovall.
This name was vaguely familiar to me from my childhood, but neither I nor my
mother can make any meaningful connection. Perhaps the Stovalls were related
to the Terrys and Keiths while they all lived in Georgia.

Next to the Stovalls we find one of Martin and Mary Jane's children, Martin
Lafayette Keith, and his young wife Catherine. They have no children. This
Catherine appears to be the person known in earlier Terry censuses as Deanna
Terry. Richard Bates reports that Deanna married a Martin Keith, but had no
information on Martin. She went by Catherine in later life. See also City
Directory below.

The Catherine here matches Deanna. This Martin is the right age to match.
Thus this person's full name appears to be Deanna Catherine Terry (or perhaps
Catherine Deanna). The full names and birth information of Deanna Catherine
and Martin Lafayette Keith are reported in Bates' and others' genealogies of
the Keiths.

The paper does not give a location for the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. The
wording implies it is in Chattanooga. I cannot identify the Pleasant Valley
Cemetery the paper refers to. I cannot find a cemetery by this name in
Chattanooga or in Murray County, Georgia, where they had previously lived.
There is a Pleasant Valley Cemetery in nearby Whitfield Cuonty, Georgia, where
they lived prior to moving into Chattanooga.

Notes for Dock Anderson TERRY

In 1920, Dock is single and living in the household of his parents, working on
the family farm. His older brother George is with the family, as well as
their widowed sister Agnes Beavers and her daughter Lillian.

In 1930, George is apparently now the head of his mother's household, after
his father passed away in 1928. Dock is still single, living in Murray County
where he was born. In his household the census reports Agnes Terry, age 40,
and daughter Lillian (reported as Dock's niece), age 15, as well as Dock's
mother. Agnes and Lillian are also still in the household.

Terry, Agnes Sister F W 40 Widow TX GA GA
Terry, Lillian niece F W 15 GA GA TX
Terry, Ned mother F W 84 Widow GA GA GA

It was hard to tell what this last name was meant to be. It looks like Ned or
Md with a period. The 1920 census, which I found much later, was clearer in
indicating this name is Ned. This must derive from Oneida, the middle name of
Martha Oneida Bates.

The listing here of Agnes as Dock's sister is odd. Her last name is reported
as Terry, though she is a widow, having been married to William Beavers. Her
daughter also should have been reported as Beavers. But also her birth place
is shown as Texas, though both her parents were born in Georgia. Other Terry
genealogies of this branch of Terrys report Agnes as born in Murray County,
like the rest of the clan.

Did her parents at some time move to Texas with some of the other Terrys, then
move back? Agnes' birth is right after the period of time when I find Thomas
Duncan Terry in the Waco, Texas, area. Other related Terrys moved to other
Texas counties from earlier. After the birth of Thomas Duncan's first child,
Julia Virginia, in 1880, he and his wife Martha moved back to Murray County
until 1900, when they moved to Indian Territory shortly after the 1900 census.

So Agnes' parents, who were born in Georgia, would have moved to Texas for
some period, where Agnes was born. At some point before Lillian was born,
Agnes moved back to Georgia, where Lillian is reported to have been born.

There is no indication in Terry genealogies that Dock's parents ever left
Murray County, Georgia. They both died there. Dock's father William Joseph
died in 1928. Maybe they moved to Texas, as several of the Terry clan did,
and then moved back home before they died?
