Note that the Find-a-Grave memorial has the birth date as Nov. 11, 1855, but
the actual year on the gravestone posted on this memorial is 1852. I have
reported the year on the gravestone as the year of death. Various genealogies
follow different of these sources to reprot her birth in 1852, 1853, or 1855.
The gravestone could be wrong. I have not been able to resolve the
discrepancy between these three dates. The 1900 census also reports the year
of birth as 1852.

Notes for George TERRY

The 1900 census recorded George Terry's birth date as December 1876. That
would make him 23, almost 24. But his age is recorded as 24. But in 1880 his
age had been reported as 6. If he had really been born in December 1876, he
would have been only 3.5 years old! Surely his parents would not have
mistaken a 3 year old for a 6 years old! The birthday reported in 1900 must
be wrong.

With a census in June 1880, that means he would have had his 6th birthday
before June 1880, making him born before June 1874. Kaye Nicholson reports
his birth date as 23 December 1874. This is closer. Since the age reported
when he is a child is more likely to be correct, I am using Kaye's date.

Notes for George C TERRY

We can tell from the 1850 census that George's first wife Mary Mansfield died
some time before 1850. Stanley family sources and the Edmund West Family Data
Collection report that Mary Ann died in 1846 in Georgia. (See more
information in the Notes for Mary Ann Mansfield.) George is single in 1850,
in a shared household with his father, Lewis Terry, with two children, Nancy
age 13 and Mary Ann age 8.

1850 Census, Murray County, Georgia, 13 August, page 32, House/Family #1590
George Terry 39 M Farmer SC [born abt 1811]
Nancy Terry 13 F SC [born abt 1837]
Mary A Terry 8 F GA Idiot [born abt 1842]

These ages and birth states of the daughters tell us that George moved to
Georgia between 1837 and 1842. His first wife Mary Ann Mansfield also died
after 1842, since she is not reported in the 1850 census. Stanley-Mansfield
genealogies tell us that she died in 1846 in Georgia.

There is a puzzling entry in a record compilation in Murray County records.
This alphabetized list of entries from the marriage book reports a series of
Terry marriages. One of these reports the groom as George C Terry and the
bride as Mary Mansfield, but the date is 26 April 1851. I do not find another
George C Terry or Mary Mansfield to match this, but this conflicts with the
other information on Mary as George's first wife and her death in 1846, as
well as the censuses of 1850 and later reporting no wife.

In the household of George's sister, next door to George, is his older
daughter Jane Elizabeth, listed as Elizabeth Terry.

1850 Census, Murray County, Georgia, 13 August, page 32, House/Family #1591
Thomas Carder 45 M Farmer SC [born abt 1805]
Nancy [Terry] Carder 37 F SC [born abt 1813]
Elizabeth Terry 14 F SC [born abt 1826]

It appears that George did not remarry for at least 14 years. Again in the
1860 census, no wife is recorded in his household. In 1860 his sister Nancy,
whose husband has died, is also living with them. In 1860 his daughter Mary
Ann is still at home, and is designated in both 1850 and 1860 as an Idiot.

Nancy's son Berry (Berryman) (age 25 born Georgia) and his wife Malissa (age
24 born South Carolina) are living one house down, with the family of M J and
Sarah West between them.

George was married in the 1840 census, but the censuses before 1850 do not
give the exact ages of any persons or any names but the head of household. So
there is one female of age to be his wife, but we have no name. There are two
female children under 5 and 1 female between 5 and 10 years old. This means
there is one more daughter we have not accounted for. I have the names of
three children, as indicated by the information from the censuses of 1850 and
1860 above. Other Terry genealogies also lack this info.

According to one Terry Family source, he has a second marriage to Elizabeth
Moreland. This source gave no date is known for this second marriage. It
would be after 1860, since he has no wife in the 1860 census. It appears that
George's second wife Elizabeth Moreland died before the 1870 census.

In 1870, George appears in the Murray County census, near other Terry family
members, but with no wife. There is a young woman named Louisa Terry, age 25,
with him. This appears to be his wife though this census did not designate
family relationships. We also see a child that appears to be Louisa's child
4-year-old William L. This census does not report on marital status of
individuals, so we are not told if Louisa is a widow. It did not seem likely
that she was a third wife of George, but the household members reported make
it look that way. I have thus reported Louisa as a third wife. This
relationship is confirmed in the 1880 census. See below.

1870 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 19 July, Militia District 972, PO
Spring Place, page 8, Hse/Fam #52
Terry, George C 60 M W Farmer Real Estate 1000 Personal Estate 700 SC
Terry, Louisa 25 F W Keeping House SC
Terry, William L 4 M W GA

I thought it more reasonable that Louisa is a widow of one of the young Terry
men, who has moved in with George to keep house for him. It did not seem to
be another daughter. The age of 25, making her born approximately 1845, does
not match his known daughters Jane Elizabeth born 1836, Nancy born 1837 or
Mary Ann born 1842. I expected this was a niece whose husband was killed in
the Civil War.

The 1880 census tell us more, due to additional information that census
gathered. It turns out that Louisa is reported there as wife of George, even
with their great age discrepancy, and William L is his son. It could still be
that Louisa was first married to a younger man, then when widowed married
George.

1880 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 3 June, Doolittle (Militia
District 972), District 154, page 7, Hse #61, Fam #66
Terry, George C M W 69 Farmer SC VA VA
Terry, Louisa C F W 35 Wife Keeping House SC
Terry, William L M W 14 Son GA

If this child is the natural child of George, this means that he and Louisa
were married sometime around 1865. I have wondered if this is the woman
reported as Elizabeth Moreland in some sources, under the name of Louisa. I
have not found Moreland families around the Terrys in censuses to evaluate
families. I have not yet been further able to identify Louisa. So with what
I know now, I will add her as a third wife.

A new factor added in this census is the report of George's parents as born in
Virginia. From other family information we know that his father Lewis was
born in South Carolina, but his mother was born in Virginia. This is one fact
that might make this appear as a different George C Terry. However, the age
matches and in 1870 he was living next door to George W Terry, age 26, his
nephew, son of George's brother Duncan Terry.

In 1900, Louisa is reported in Texas, living with her son William L and his
wife Cora, who have no children. They have been in Texas at least two years,
because William and Cora and William have been married 2 years. Cora was born
in Texas. They are enumerated in Erath County, west of Fort Worth.

George married Elizabeth Moreland after the 1860 census. His first wife died
in 1846. In 1860 he has only his 18-year-old daughter Mary A in his home,
plus his sister Nancy Carder, whose husband Thomas has died.

George W Terry
is reported by some genealogies as the son of Duncan and Wyzetta. Also this
memorial is attached to our George in some other genealogies. But this
George's wife is Mary, instead of Martha and is Mary 13 years younger than
Martha was reported in the 1870 census. We might allow that Mary is a second
wife. But no one who has Mary as George's wife has a wife named Martha,
ignoring the 1870 census, or perhaps assuming that Mary and martha are the
same person.

This George W Terry was living in Arkansas not far from Le Flore County,
Okahoma, where his family lived in Indian Territory/Oklahoma. He is
associated with Scott county, right across the state line from Le Flore
County, Oklahoma.

But the memorial reports that this George W Terry is the son of Mary and
Thomas Terry, who are not our George's parents. If tthe memorial is correct
about the paents, then this is not our George W Terry, whose parents are
William Barney Terry and Julia Ann Roberts. So it appears some trees have
confused two different individuals and families.

There is a likelihood they are related, howver, due to the location and
similar names as run in our Terry family. However, I have not identified the
reported parents "Mary and Thomas."

Notes for George Walter TERRY

The first record I have for George Walter Terry is the 1850 census, when he was
6 years old. He is listed with his family in the 1013th Militia District of
Murray County, Georgia.

1850 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 14 November, page 236 (264),
Hse/Fam #621
Duncan Terry 34 M Farmer $1200 Real estate SC
Wyzetta Terry 33 F SC.
George Terry 6 M GA

The census age would make George born in 1844. Since the census was taken in
November, his birthday would likely be early in the year, so 1844 seems a firm
choice for the year of birth. In 1860 his age is 15, only a 9-year increase,
so this seems to confirm the birth year in 1844.

In 1860, George W is the oldest of 5 children, at age 15.

are related to the Keiths through marriage. We follow some of our Keith

Notes for Georgia Evelyn TERRY

One genealogy reports the child in the sequence of birth to match Georgia as
Evelyn. This appears to be based on the 1930 census which lists her as only
Evelyn, age 17. It would seen we can assume this lists her by her middle
name, which matches the initial E in the 1920 census.

There is a discrepancy in her birth date. The 1920 census records her age as
11 years and some months. The number above the 12 for the months is smudged,
as are many numbers on the page. Since the census date was January that year,
to have passed her 7th birthday, she had to be born in 1912. Again in 1930,
her age is 17, in an April census.

But one date in genealogies is an exact birth date of 3 September 1913.
According to that, she was only 6 at the 1920 census, and had her 7th birthday
on 3 September 1920. Kaye Nicholson, indeed reports the date as 3 September
1912. I am following Nicholson's date for Georgia Evelyn's birth.

Notes for Grover Cleveland TERRY

In the 1900 census, Grover is reported as 13 years old. His birthday in the
census differs from the date given in family sources, being one year later,
September 1886, while family genealogies report 30 September 1885. The age
given matches the year of birth reported in the census.

1900 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 4 June, McDonald District,
Enumeration District 71, page 5B, Hse #86, Fam #89
Terry, Cyrus L Head W M Jan 1847 53 Married 32 years GA NC NC Farmer Owns
Terry, Emily Wife W F Apr 1862 48 Married 32 years borne 7 children, 7
living GA GA GA
Terry, Grover Son W M Sept 1886 13 Single GA GA GA At School

In 1910, there is a similar discrepancy, with the age reported as 23 at the
April census date. This would be correct for a birthday in September 1886.

1910 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 22 April, McDonald District,
Enumeration District 110, page 4A, Hse/Fam #71
Terry, Grover Head M W 23 Married 2 years GA GA GA Farmer
Terry, Addie Wife W F 18 Married 2 years GA GA GA
Terry, Robert L Son M W 1 Married 2 years GA GA GA

Grover's age of 34 in the 1920 census is right for the family's reported birth
date of September 1885.

1920 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 22 January, McDonald District,
Enumeration District 110, page 4A, Hse/Fam #71
Terry, Grover Head M W 34 Married 2 years GA GA GA Farmer

Terry, R L Son M W 10 GA GA GA
Terry, Julian Son M W 8 GA GA GA
Terry, H B Son M W 3 GA GA GA

1930 is the first census that gives Grover's middle initial, reporting him as
Grover C, matching the genealogy name of Grover Cleveland. The youngest son's
name is probably Grover Cleveland also. His wife is also reported as Sarah A,
confirming the names Sarah Addie reported by family sources.

1930 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 15 April, McDonald (Militia
District 1013), District 11, page 5A, Hse #70, Fam #75
Terry, Grover C Head M W 40 Married at age 20 GA GA GA Farmer

See discussion on birth date discrepancies in Notes for his wife Sarah Addie
Pendley. Compare also similar problems with other siblings in Notes on GC's
brother William Owen Terry.

In the 1930 census, Grover and Addie are living next door to his brother Cyrus
L, single head of household at age 49, and his mother Emily, a widow age 77.
Younger brother William O, age 39, is still single and living in Cyrus'
household.

There was a memorial for Grover on Find a Grave with no famliy links. I added
family links and the updated memorial is enclosed below. Note that there are
two different memorials for his son Billy P Terry, with difference dates of
death. The date of death on Billy's gravestone is 2002. There are also two
different memorials for Huse Bogus Terry, with the same dates on each.

Birth Date 7 Jun 1931

A genealogy below reports the middle initial M in this public records was for
Missouri. However, a history report online at the Murray County Museum
website reports that Hazel had no middle name. She was named as the informant
for the family information in this article, so this seems to indicate it was
Hazel herself that said she had no middle name. No birth record has been
found.

"Hazel Terry was born after 1930 so her name does not appear on that Census.
She helped to fill in some blanks concerning family names. She said that their
father's full name was Grover Cleveland Terry and the mother's was Sarah Addie
(Pendley) Terry. R. L. was Robert Lee. Julian had no middle name. H. B. was
Huse B. Terry. Billie P. actually was a male, so Billy, but he had no middle
name or initial. G. C. was Grover Cleveland Terry, named for his father. Hazel
had only the one name."

Notes for Hettie Maye TERRY

"I'm noticing on several family trees regarding Duncan Terry and Harriet Sliger
that they are missing my grandmother. My grandmother is Hettie Maye Terry
Mosley Trotter [daughter of Duncan Lafayette Terry and Harriet Sliger]. Her
siblings were Ola, Donnie, Louis Alexander and William Lafayette. She was
born Dec 12, 1886 in Indian Territory, Oklahoma and died April 15, 1969 in Los
Angeles, Calif. She had 3 children, Olive Mosley, Maggie Mosley and Woodrow L
Mosley (my father)."

Robert registered for the WWI draft in 1918, and reported his contact (nearest
relative) as Pearlee Mosley. Consistent with this, the 1920 census reports
his wife's name as Lee. His draft registration was dated in September 1918,
and the 1920 census reports that Robert and Pearlee's first chdl was born
about September or October 1915. So they married while Hettie was still
pregnant with their last child Woodrow, who was born in May 1915.

In 1920, the census indicates that Robert and Pearlee (or Lee as she is
reported in the census) moved to Oklahoma City some time after he registered
for the raft in Ft Smith in September 1918. The census reprots that their
firs daughter was born in Oklahoma and the second in Arkansas.

The last child he and Hettie had was born in 1915. They would have divorced
some time between then and 1918. No marriage record has been found for Robert
and Pearlee. Oklahoma records are not online. Records that match him
indicate Robert moved to Sacramento, California.

Hettie married a widower named Nathan (Natt) Trotter in nearby County,
Arkansas on 6 July 1919.

The birth of Maggie in Missouri indicates that Hettie and Robert moved to
Missouri for a short time then back to Oklahoma. Likely Robert died in
Oklahoma. Sebastian County is across the border in Arkansas. There was a lot
of movement of Terry family members across the border between LeFlore County,
Oklahoma, and Sebastian and neighboring counties in Arkansas.

In 1930, the Moseley children Maggie and Woodrow were enumerated under the
surname Trotter of their stepfather.
