Notes for Joseph A TERRY

I found Joe A Terry first in 1900 as a single fellow working as a Servant in a
Stiles family in Sprio, Choctaw Nation. I could not immediately match him to
a Terry parent, but he matches the ages and birth places of children of Joseph
W Terry, who moved in to Choctaw Nation from Arkansas, before the 1900 census.

After checking some other sources, I got some details from other records, but
then found a photo matching the first name of Joe's wife from his draft
registration. This photo had a note stating that Joe's father was Isham/Isom
Terry, whom I did not have in this genealogy. I followed up from there.
Details below. Her maiden name Lovin intrigued me since we have Lovins in the
family on my mother's Green lineage.

Joe and Carrie's granddaughter Sharon gave me some basic information about her
ancestors, reporting her father's name as Eugene. Eugene was born in 1924.
At least geneology one cites the California Death Index, which reports that
the mother of one Eugene Terry, born in Oklahoma 22 Feb 1924 had the maiden
name Lovin. Yet there is no child in the 1930 census to match Eugene, who
should be 6 years old at that time. If this California report is indeed the
for the correct Eugene Terry, where was Eugene in 1924?

Sharon Terry said she thought he was in the home of an older sibling. " I
recall him [Eugene] talking of his sister Elsie often caring for him along
with her own child of the same age."
-- Sharon Terry, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 14 March 2016

The child whose name appears to be Otto Terry, age 8 in 1920, might be out of
the home on his own by 1930. But what happened to Gusta (probably Augusta),
who should be about 14 in 1930?

In 1952 and later, Carrie and Joseph are the only Terrys listed in the
Modesto, California, City Directory. Their residence address is in Turlock,
one of the towns included in the Modesto directory. No occupation is reported
for either in these directories.

The 1956 directory indicates that Joe and Carrie lived in Turlock.

"The reason you see only Joe and Carrie in Turlock CA is that my parents moved
to Hayward CA and other places in the bay area. We often moved following
boilermaker jobs. We were in NM in the early 70's and then Keyes CA (where my
parents originally met), which is very close to Turlock, where Joe and Carrie
had lived at one point. Some of my relatives also lived in the bay area."

Whereas up to now, Joe and Carrie have been the only Terry family in the
Modesto directory, there is a whole slew of Terrys in the 1958 directory. I
cannot determine that any of them are kin to Joe and Carrie.

Another child is reported by genealogies and other sources, Robert R (Bobby)
Terry. The California Death Index again identifies him as born in Oklahoma
and his mother as a Lovin. This child is reported born in 1928, yet is
missing, like his brother Eugene, from the 1930 census.

An old family photo is annotated by Carrie and Joe's granddaughter Sharon,
commenting on her father Eugene. She also includes the full names of some of
the siblings. Notably, she does not mention a child named Robert (Bobby) Ray,
who would not be in this photo. The date on the photo is 1912. In later
email discussions she reported that Bobby Ray worked with his brother Eugene
in Boilermaker work. Bobby was killed on teh job one day when someone working
above him dislodged a rock that hit him in the back of the head, under his
hard hard.

"I believe several got into boilermaker work including my dad and Bobby.
Bobby was killed when a rock hit him under his hard hat (back of his neck)
during his lunch break. The rock was dislodged from the hill above him when
someone was working with equipment up there."

In all the records I have seen, Joseph's wife's name is reproted as Dovina.
On her gravestone in Eddy Cemetery, Eddy, McClennan County, Texas, the name is
spelled Dovinah. On her son William Walker Terry's Arizona death certificate
his mother's name is reported as Tabatha (likely Tabitha). No famly genealogy
has the name Tabitha for Dovina. But two genealogies have her with the name
Virginia, in the form Virgina Dovina or Dovina Virginia. I ahve not seen
documentation of Virginia in records.

In 1864, Joseph and his son Thomas were registered in the census for
reorganizing the Georgia Militia. They were living in Terrell County at that
time.

598
Joseph Terry, Age 51, Preacher, born South Carolina (abt 1813)

Jacque also references a pension file including a personal letter from Joseph
Terry dated 13 September 1878 concerning sale of land by Joseph Lewis Terry to
D A Walker in Dalton, Georgia. D A Walker was apparently a relative of
Joseph's wife Dovina Walker. Joseph and his wife Dovina (Dovey) apparently
sold the land in preparation for moving to Texas. Joseph died less than two
years later in Milam County, Texas. Cameron is the county seat of Milam
County, near San Antonio (Bexar County). We find many Terrys that are also
likely part of our lineage in Bexar County.

The 1900 census now tells us when their son Thomas married his wife Mary
Thomas in Milam County, Texas. The census says they have been married 26
years. This would mean they married about 1874. This is 4 years before the
earliest date we previously knew of that this family might have moved to
Texas. For a long while the only other reference date I had related to the
move to Texas was that in September 1878, Thomas' parents Joseph and Dovina
sold land in Murray County, Georgia. I found no further information until
they show up in the 1880 census, in the same household with Thomas and Mary,
in Milam County. Texas.

I kept missing Joseph and Dovey in the 1870 census. Then I found a census
record that appeared to be them. Now other genealogies also list this census
for Joseph and Dovina.

Dovina is listed as Donna. Also there is another family group in the
household with the surname of Head, all born in Georgia. The strange famliy
name for all the entries after Donna (Dovinah) match their children in other
censuses plus the two younger ones, William (Walker) and Lula, who is imissing
from several lists and genealogies.

But the ages and birth places match Joseph and Dovey, and Joseph here is a
Baptist Preacher, which also matches. So there were enumerator errors in
these entries. I am entering the last name of the chidlren as Terry. There
is an aditional child after WIlliam Walker Terry, born in 1860 after the
census. the youngest child in this household is Lula, age 4.

In September 2008, I looked into details about this family again, after the
contact from Donna. I found Jacque Watkins' online genealogy of the Terrys
for the first time. Jacque reports that they were already living in Brazos
County, Texas, for the 1870 census. I have not found such an entry for Joseph
and Dovina. If they were already in Texas in 1870, then they had already
moved several years before they sold their land in Georgia.

I also found that this family provides a connection to my grandmother Jenkins,
who was Julia Virginia (Jennie) Terry. In 2007, I had confirmed her birth in
McClennan County, Texas, which had been an uncertainty, with family memory
claiming her birth in Georgia, but some alternative information that she was
born near Waco, Texas. I found Jennie's parents in the 1880 census in
McLennan County (Waco is the county seat) before her birth later in the year.

This explained Julia Virginia's birthplace reported as Texas in some censuses.
I knew other Terrys were in the area at that time. I knew that Dovina had
lived in McClennan County after Joseph's death in Milam County, and that
Dovina was buried in the Eddy Cemetery, a few miles south of Lorena, where
Jennie was born in 1880. For some reason, Jennie's parents, Thomas Duncan and
Mattie moved back to the Terry home area of Murray County.

Joseph and Dovina are listed in the 1880 census in Milam County, along with
their daughter Martha Missouri. They are actually in the same household and
listed with the same family number as Joseph's son Thomas Louis. But in terms
of relationships, they are listed as a separate family. Thomas is the Head of
the household, but instead of being listed as father, Joseph is listed with no
relationship given. Dovina is listed as Wife, based on her relationship to
Joseph, not her son the head of the household. Likewise, Martha M is listed
as daughter, her relationship to Joseph, rather than as sister of Thomas, the
head of the household.

Terry, Dovina W F 55 Wife Kpg Hse NC VA VA (b abt 1825)

I also note that the birth place for both Joseph's parents is Virginia, rather
than South Carolina for Lewis his father and Virginia for Constance his
mother. Also, Martha's birthplace is given as Alabama, although it appears
the family was living in Murray County, Georgia, when she was born, just as
for the other children. They did not sell their land to move to Texas till
she was about 20 years old.

We always scan these records for consistency to get more clues as to family
events. Notice that the birth state of Lillie's mother is different here from
the other chidlren Sarah and Louis. Her father's birth state is Georgia like
Sarah, Jane and Louis. But their mother (last state given) was born in South
Carolina, while Lillie's mother is reported born in Georgia. Georgia matches
the reported birth state in 1860 and 1870 of Hannah/Joanna. And she was the
wife in both these.

So it looks like the mother of Sarah should have also been GA. This is
probably be an enumerator error. Since Joseph was a widower, the information
may not have been clear. Notice that in the 1910 census, Lillie's and Louis'
mother's birth state is reported as Arkansas, instead of Georgia, while
Sarah's mother is now reported as born in Georgia, adding even more confusion.

Jane appears only in this census.

This census was the one that enabled me to tie information on Louis Lafayette
Terry to this family. For several months I had some bits of information on
him from a couple of sources, but had not yet found out who his parents were.
I had Joe and Hannah and the other children in the genealogy, but this was the
first time I had seen Louis L with any family. He was born about 1889, from
his age given here as 21. I have hunted in vain for a listing for Louis
Lafayette in the 1900 census.

Several genealogies identify this Joseph W Terry with Joseph Walker Terry, who
is buried in Escambia County, Alabama. This Joseph Terry and the Terrys in
that county appear to be a different Terry line or a separate branch of our
Terry line. Our Joseph W Terry moved to Arkansas and his last two children
were born there, the last in 1892.

He was in eastern Oklahoma for the 1910 census, after his wife Hanna/Johanna
died. It does not seem likely or even possible that he moved at the end of
his life back east to Alabama. I cannot identify any of the Terrys in
Escambia County, Alabama, with members of our Terry lineage that I know of.

The wife in the grave information is also different, being Martha Jane
McGowin, and not Hanna Johanna, whose last name I have not discovered. The
genealogies that link our Joseph W to Joseph Walker Terry in Alabama have
Hanna Joanna as Joseph's wife, even though they link to Joseph Walker and
joint grave with Martha Jane McGowin.

This seems pretty conclusive, when we find him enumerated as a widower still
in LeFlore County, Oklahoma, in 1920. This is the first census in which
Joseph's mother is reported as born in Louisiana; it has been South Carolina.
Sarah Holt, his widowed daughter, matches Sarah in the census reported his
chidlren, and she is reproted under the same married name as a widow in 1900.

This appears to be the correct grave for our Joe W Terry. But the report of
his wife's name as Mary Eden is unacounted for in the informat on at hand. No
wife appears with him in the censuses above after 1900, and he appears with
only his daughter Sarah Holt. Perhaps there has been a misidentification here
of the grave of Joe, though the overt dates and location fit otherwise. Note
that the soruce of the photo is different from the source of the memorial on

Notes for Julia Virginia TERRY

Most of Julia Virginia's grandchildren called her Mamma Jennie. Some adults
called her Jennie. Her Christian grandchildren (Sallie's children) called her
Grandma.

Mamma Jennie came to visit us in Texas when I was about age 4, at my brother
Gary's birth. We lived in the country south of Quanah, in Hardeman County,
Texas, at that time. I would usually see her only when we went to visit her
and my grandfather in Chickasha, Oklahoma, about three hours away.

I remember she used to tell me some things about Terry family history. I
especially recall she said they were of Irish background, and that they had
some Native American blood, but she had no details. We do find applications
for enrollment in some Terry and related Keith ancestor-cousins. One of our
Keith families is enrolled in the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.

--------------------------
Terry Genealogy & History

Terry has the distinction of having over a hundred spelling variations,
including Tarry, Theuret, Theike, Thiele, Thierry, Thoreau, Tieck, Tietze,
Tilke, Tillich, and Torry. Derived from the middle English given-name
"Thierri," which was derived from Old Norman given-name "Theodoric," Terry
means powerful.

Alternatively, in Old French, "thierri" is a potter. The Terry/Thierry form
is generally English; Terry family history traces back to a feudal manor in
Kent, where the Thierry family was granted lands by the Earl of Pembroke in
the 1130s or 1140s. Simultaneously in Ireland, Terri branches settled in Cork
and Torrie/Torry branches in Waterford. American Terry family history dates
from 1630 in New England.
-- Archives, https://www.archives.com/genealogy/family-history-terry.html
--------------------------

She told me a little also about the Connallys of Georgia and Texas. She was a
first cousin to Texas Senator Thomas Terry Connally, my grandmother's aunt.
He was a nephew of Texas Governor Connally, who switched parties form Democrat
to Republican to become Secretary of the Treasury under US President Ronald
Reagan.

I remember attending Julia Virginia's funeral held at First Baptist Church in
Anadarko, Oklahoma. I was 17 years old at that time, and lived in Arkansas.
She had been living there in a retirement care center, near her son Thomas
Asa. Her children had moved her there after her husband Joseph Asa had passed
away in 1962. I remember visiting her there many times during those 4 years.

She was buried in Chickasha, where they had lived for so many years. After
the funeral in Anadarko, the funeral party processed to Chickasha (about 20
miles away) to the Chickasha Fairlawn Cemetery northwest of Chickasha, for
burial in the family plot, next to her husband, my grandfather, Joseph Asa
Jenkins, where they share a joint headstone.

The Family History compiled by my cousin Harold Christian gives the date of
death as 22 Jan 1966, while the gravestone reports 24 Jan 1966. The records
of Fairlawn Cemetery report burial as 26 January 1966.

The 1910 Census shows Julia V as wife of Joseph A, married 9 years. Note that
the birthplace of all the children's mother is reported as Texas. This is
correct regarding Sallie and Mary, whose mother was Hester Smith. But what
about the children of Julia? Family tradition reports that Julia Virginia was
born in Georgia, even though some censuses on her married children later
indicate they reported Texas as their mother's birthplace.

In my earlier analysis of this I concluded that this should be considered a
recording error by the census official. Harold Christian 30 or so years
earlier also had this view. This type of error is numerous in the censuses of
the 1800s.

I saw in March 2007 that the problem was more complicated than that. In the
1900 Murray County, Georgia, census, while she is still in her father's
household, Jennie's place of birth is reported as Texas. Below I outline
later censuses which likewise report Texas as her birthplace.

1900 Census, Murray County, Georgia, 8 June, McDonald District, District 71,
Page 5B, Hse #86, Family #89

Terry, Mattie Wife F W Nov 1861 38 m-20-yrs NC NC NC
Terry, Jennie Dau F W Dec 1880 19 single TX GA NC

Some census reports for her married children report her birthplace as Texas,
while some say Georgia. Harold Christian reported that her obituary in the
Chickasha Express newspaper gave her place of birth as Dalton. Georgia, based
on reports from family members and some censuses.

I had been unable to find any record otherwise of Thomas Duncan Terry having
been in Texas for some short period when the eldest child, Julia Virginia,
could have been born. I thought it odd that the would have moved there about
a year after their marriage, had one child, then moved back to the exact same
place in Georgia.

But I did find that other members of his family were in McLennan and Milam
County, Texas around that time. It occurred to me that perhaps Thomas, a
young, single man, had joined some of his cousins in their westward trek, but
then later returned to the family's home are in Georgia.

For a long period Thomas Duncan and Mattie did not appear in any search of
census for 1880, despite various strategies for searching. Finally in August
2007, I found an entry in McLennan County, Texas, for T D and M M Terry.
While Mattie's middle initial is W, not M, the ages matched, and their
marriage date of January 1880, made this look right. It seems to be the
proper family, and there are other members of their Terry family in the same
county.

Cinching the deal was the fact that next door is a Wall family. Only initials
are given in this census, so there is no confirmation of their full names.
Though I cannot confirm exact relationships, the surname next door is a strong
confirmation of Mattie's identity.

I have not found Jennie's Texas birth certificate. However, I do have
Jennie's own statement that she was born near Lorena, Texas. In May 2007 my
mother found some old family records she did not remember having, in a box
discovered while she was moving to a different house. There were several
pages of family names, dates and places in my mother's handwriting.

The list of births included a statement of birth of Julia Virginia Terry, with
the birth date we have from other family sources, with the place of birth
McLennan County. My mother, Lou Gregory Jenkins, had not remembered taking
these notes, but thought this information had to be from Julia Virgina
herself. The source of this family information was not stated anywhere on the
pages. Lou surmised that she had taken this down with all the other
information on Jennie's brothers, sisters, parents and grandparents on both
sides. The information included some nieces and nephews also.

About 1954-55, Lou had also gathered some information from members of her
family in Oklahoma and California, so it seems likely that this extensive
family detail was indeed elicited from Jennie. My cousin Harold Christian did
not have access to this when he began compiling family information in the
1970s, after Jennie's death in 1965. From the birth and death dates, the
information was recorded some time between March 1954 and Oct 1955.

I wanted to find more objective information to corroborate this family report
in Lou's notes. The 1880 census in McLennan County seems quite strong in
supporting Jennie's birth in the same county where her parents and some other
Terry family members were living a few weeks before her birth. I hope that a
birth record for Jennie will cap off the issue.

Her parents were married in January 1880. I have not yet confirmed whether
that was in Georgia or Texas. Some of Mattie's family also are found in Texas
and Oklahoma, and they may be kin to the Walls in Arkansas. Thomas and
Mattie's next door neighbor in the 1880 census is an E P Wall, age 30, born in
Arkansas, and there are other Walls in Arkansas, some of whom later shown up
in Oklahoma in the area of Thomas and Mattie. I have not been able to find
any of Mattie's family in Texas in 1880. But neither have I been able to
identify them in Georgia or even to definitively find any Wall family in
censuses or public records to match her parents.

In the newly-discovered family information from Jennie, there are two brothers
of Mattie listed also. Though the name E P Wall is not included in the family
information from Jennie, the location and the birth in Arkansas makes it
likely this is a brother or a cousin, or perhaps a young uncle. E P is 10
years older than Mattie.

It is not known exactly when Thomas and Mattie moved with Jennie back to
Murray County, Thomas Duncan Terry's old family home area. Their next child
was Thomas Everett Terry, born in August 1882. So the family was in Murray
County before that time. The first record of Jennie in Murray County is a
grade report dated 3 March 1893 when she was 12 years old, from the Pleasant
Valley Academy in Murray County. Among her personal effects after her death
was also a commencement ribbon dated 1897.

Pleasant Valley Academy, started in about 1872, was named after the town where
it was located. The town's name was changed to Eton in 1906 when the railroad
connected there.

"In 1833 in North Murray County, Georgia, a stagecoach stop called “Pleasant
Valley” was established. Around 1872, the Pleasant Valley Academy was
organized. Upon completion of the railroad in 1906, the Town was renamed
“Eton” in honor of Eton College in England and its excellent academic
reputation. Despite the name change and the Incorporation in 1909, Eton,
Georgia continues to be the home of Pleasant Valley living."
-- "Pleasant Valley LIving," http://www.eton-ga.gov/

As a child I always heard that my grandmother had been born in Georgia. My
father, Orville Lee Jenkins, commented on occasion about her genteel Southern
accent, which was still perceptible in certain situations. Of course if the
family moved from her birthplace in Texas back to Georgia when she was young,
she would still have developed this Georgia accent. My dad may have just got
some details confused in his memory of childhood information about his mother.
Or I may have remembered only the Georgia accent part of what he said. I
don't remember ever talking to my grandmother about her birthplace.

My grandparents' 50th Wedding Anniversary newspaper story in 1951 reports that
20-year-old Jennie moved to Marlow with her parents in January 1901. Only 2
1/2 months later she married Joseph Asa Jenkins, a widower 15 years older than
her with 6 children. Her parents were against her marrying him, mainly due to
his age, according to family memory. She sneaked out of her parents' home one
evening and they went to town to marry. Their record of marriage was found in
a transcription set of Chickasaw Nation records.

-- Chickasaw Nation Marriages, Ardmore Courthouse,
http://www.okgenweb.org/~okgarvin/kinard/chicmarriageindex.htm

Only in 2017 was a scanned copy of the record book found on the Internet,
through FamilySearch.org. Following are the full details form that license
and marriage certificate.

-- Chickasaw Nation Southern District Marriage Book, Ardmore Courthouse, p

Their marriage record tells us that although the whole Terry family was
reported in June 1900 as present in their residence in Murray County, Georgia,
we know Jennie and at least some of her family were already in Marlow, since
she married Joe Jenkins there in March 1900. Not only that, the story about
their marriage indicates that Jennie's parents opposed her marriage to an
older widowed man and Jennie climbed out a back window of her parents' house
in Marlow and eloped with Joe to marry there in Marlow.

The 1910 census is inconsistent on the birthplace of Julia. Georgia is
indicated on her own entry, but Texas is entered for the birthplace of the
mother of her children! They were still in Marlow town at the time of the
census.

In the census report above, there is an error in the age of the baby son. The
ages of other children match birth dates the family has, but there was no
child born at a time that would have allowed a child of 2 months old in 1910.
Arthur Carthal would have been about 4 months old at that time. The next son,
Orville, was not born until 1912.

The same census reports Julia's father's family, with names that match family
knowledge of Julia Virginia's siblings. Wife of Thomas Duncan Terry, Mattie W
(Martha Wiley Wall), is reported to have been born in North Carolina, as well
as both her parents.

Earlier LDS data had recorded the mother of Julia Virginia Terry as born in
Waco, Texas. This coincides with the birth report in the 1900 census.
However, it was uncertain, since there are other Jenkins and Terry families in
that area that appear to be unrelated to our families. It had been considered
an error up to now.

There was one uncertainty related to the move of the family form Georgia to
Indian Territory in about 1900. The Terry family are still in the 1900 census
in McDonald District of Murray County, Georgia. It is known that some of the
Terry families from Georgia had migrated to Texas, while Thomas Duncan Terry
moved his family to Oklahoma. However, all children (living in 1910) were
born in Georgia before the move. That would mean the move occurred after
1905. But Julia married Joseph Jenkins in March 1901.

I note that Harold Christian comments at one time that Rama was born in
Oklahoma. This census report and some other indicators say he was born in
Georgia. But at least some of the family had already moved to Oklahoma before
1901, because Julia married Joseph Jenkins in March 1901. So if Rama was born
in Georgia, perhaps Thomas and older children moved to Oklahoma early. It
seems more likely that the report of Rama's birth in Georgia is a census
recording error.

Some time after the census in 1910, Joseph Asa moved his family to Mountain
View, in Kiowa County, Oklahoma. Joe farmed on two places in that area. He
first farmed on a place owned by his brother-in-law Bill Christian, then moved
to an Indian lease farm.

"By about 1910 he had decided to move his family from Marlow to Mountain View,
Oklahoma, where he was to settle for a few years supporting his family by
farming. ... "Some time after the marriage of daughter Sallie and Cleve
Christian in November 1911] Joseph is believed to have moved his family from
Bill Christian's farm at Oakdale [north of Mountain View just across the
county line into Caddo County] to an Indian lease he subsequently obtained
southeast of Mountain View."

In April 1912, Orville was born in Mt View. In October 2010, I found a record
of a trip Jennie made with the children in late 1912 to Canada. She and the
children went to Vancouver, British Columbia, by train to join Joseph Asa, who
was working there. This reports her birth in Texas, which we know from family
and public sources to be correct. But it also reports all the children were
born in Texas, while we know they were all born in Oklahoma. Note also that
Canadian immigration also reports that all the family members are Farmers,
even the baby!

In the 1920 Kiowa County, Oklahoma, census, the birth place of Julia is again
Texas. From the birth state reports, it appears they came back from Canada by
at least 1915. Five-year-old Gladys Lahoma is reported born in Oklahoma, and
we know from family sources she was born in Mountain View, where her brother
Orville had been born in 1912 before they went to British Columbia.

The family moved to Fort Cobb about 1921, or maybe late 1920. There is some
discrepancy over the times as given by Harold, from family memories he
collected and records available. Jenkins Family History by Harold Keith
Christian, p 19, reports that "[After the birth of Netheline in December 1918]
Joseph is believed to have moved his family from Mountain View first to a farm
south of Fort Cobb and sometime thereafter into Fort Cobb."

However, in the 1920 census, Joe was still farming in Mt View Township. Also
we have a certificate appointing Jennie as a "committeeman" of the Democratic
Party precinct committee in Mt View dated 6 October 1920. So the family was
still definitely still living in Mt View at that time.

Harold Christian reported in his Jenkins history: "[After moving to Fort
Cobb], it is believed he managed an orphan's home for about the first year.
Apparently not satisfied with that he again entered the profession of law
enforcement, first serving as a deputy to the Town Marshall and subsequently
as Town Marshall." It is possible that Joe took the orphanage job in Ft Cobb
before the whole family moved.

A report from his daughter Mabel would place the beginning of the Marshall job
in October 1921, though they could have been living in the town already before
that time. Harold Christian quotes Joe's daughter Mabel as saying: "When
Kerwin was about 3-4 days old, Poppa was made City Marshall." Kerwyn was born
in October 1921. If Mabel's memory is right, then Joseph Asa became Marshall
of Fort Cobb in October 1921.

The 1930 census record for this family from Fort Cobb, Caddo County, Oklahoma,
also reports Texas as the birthplace of Julia, as well as Joe. This
corroborates earlier reports that she alone of all the Terry children was born
in Texas, though those after her were born in Georgia until the final child
born in Oklahoma. The presence in Texas for Julia's birth, followed by the
subsequent presence of her family back in Murray County, Georgia, is still
unexplained.

Note that Rhonda's name is written here as in 1910, all as one name rather
than two, as family sources have. It is also unusual that her name is entered
last, though she is the oldest child still at home. This may be because she
was in college in Oklahoma City, and probably actually had her own residence
there while attending Draughon Business School.

In 1930, in contrast to the listing for Jennie herself, the record for her
daughter Mabel (Mable) reports that Mabel's mother was born in Georgia!

1930 Census, Stephens County, Oklahoma, 2 April, Ft Cobb Town, District 26,

This may mean that Mabel, and maybe other children, had over the years come to
think of their mother as born in Georgia, when in reality the actual
birthplace, as still reported by Jennie in her own census reports, was Texas.

The 1940 census reports that Joe and Jennie lived in or near Ft Cobb in 1935,
then moved to Chickasha somewhere before 1940. They were in Chickasha by
1938, when they were reported in the Chickasha City Directory for that year.
Note that in 1938, their address is on 18th Street, but in 1940 they are on

In 1951, Joe and Jennie celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. The
following detailed writeup summarizes their lives up to that point.

==================================
J. A. Jenkinses Celebrate 50th Wedding Anniversary
Six of Seven Children Plan Open House

Fifty years ago last Thursday, a 20-year-old girl slipped unnoticed through a
window of a neighbor's house in Marlow and drove away in a buggy with her
fiancé to be married.

Today, fifty years and three days later, the couple will celebrate their
golden, wedding anniversary. They are Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Jenkins, 1016 South
20th.

The 1901 wedding ceremony was performed by the preacher as the couple sat in
the buggy in front of his house. Plans for the dreamed-of church wedding were
forgotten after the bride’s parents voiced objections to the wedding.

Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins, ages 84 and 70, will be honored at an open house from
2:30 to 4:30 p.m. today in the home of son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
A. C. Jenkins, 1522 South 17th. Six of the honorees' seven children will be
hosts.

A gold-and-white color scheme will be used in decorations for the reception.
Punch and cake will be served from a table centered with a layout of
California golden fruit. Over the mantel will be a large gold-and-white
framed picture of the couple taken shortly after their wedding.

The Oklahoma pioneers were both born in Texas. Mr. Jenkins moved in 1890 to
the site of what is now Marlow where he farmed and later served as City
marshal. Mrs. Jenkins, then Julia Virginia Terry, moved with her family from
Georgia to Marlow in January of 1901. Two and one-half months after their
meeting, they were married.

Mr. Jenkins moved his family to Mountain View in 1910. But soon they were off
to Vancouver, B. C., where Mr. Jenkins worked on the Canadian-Alaskan Highway
project. When war broke out in 1914, they returned to Mountain View.

The family lived in Fort Cobb from 1921 until 1935. There also Mr. Jenkins
farmed and served for a time as city marshal. Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins have lived
in Chickasha since 1935, when Mr. Jenkins retired.

Mr. Jenkins is still quite active, but failing eyesight has slowed down his
reading habits. However, a reading record machine has solved this problem
pretty well. His main interest is his church work, and he takes a lively
interest in world affairs. Both he and his wife are members of the 12th
Street Missionary Baptist church.

Mrs. Jenkins is particularly interested in her flower garden and, of course,
her grandchildren. Three who live in Chickasha, the children of the A. C.
Jenkinses, "spend lots of time with us," she says, proudly. They are Carthel
[Carthal] Trent, 13, Mike Thomas, 8, and Larhonda, 5.

Mrs. Jenkins says she and her husband have had a full and most interesting
life together, although nothing spectacular has ever happened to them. She
perhaps considers today as spectacular as any other day in their lives. For
numerous daughters, sons, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other
relatives and friends have descended upon Chickasha to honor them.

The six children who are their hosts for the day are Mrs. Mabel Hill and Miss
Netheline Jenkins of Oklahoma City, Asa Jenkins of Anadarko, Mrs. Russell Boyd
of Amarillo, Texas, Orville Jenkins of Quanah, Texas, and A. C. Jenkins of
Chickasha. One other daughter, Mrs. Charles R. Henry [Hendron] of San
Gabriel, Calif., was unable to come for the reunion.

Also here are daughter-in-law [Mrs.] Asa Lee Jenkins Jr [should be Asa Jenkins
& should not be Jr] and son, grandson and family, Mr. and Mrs. Asa Lee Jenkins
Jr [should not be Jr] and son Ronnie, Oklahoma City; son-in-law Russell Boyd
and grandson and family, Mr. and Mrs. Charles K. Hill and son, Charles Mark,
Amarillo.

Mrs. Cleve Christian, Chickasha, is the only one of Mr. Jenkins’ four
children by a previous marriage who will be here for the anniversary
observance. The other three are James E. Jenkins and B. J. Jenkins of Buena
Park, Calif., and Mrs. Neil Yates of Aledo, Texas.

Four sisters and one brother of Mrs. Jenkins who are also here are: Mrs. W.
C. Madison, Mrs. Elmer Wagnon, Mrs. Best [Bert] Lewis and Arthur Terry of
Marlow, and Mrs. E. P. Hill of Duncan. Mrs. Annie Tabors, Mountain View, a
niece of Mr. Jenkins, also will be present.

The listed relatives are only those who sent word they would join Mr. and Mrs.
Jenkins in the celebration. But Mrs. Jenkins points out the possibilities for
a larger group are great. For there are 10 grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren. In addition, Mr. Jenkins has 28 other grand-children and
39 other grandchildren.

And then, of course, there is a 50 year accumulation of friends.

I found a 1943 directory in San Francisco that matches Kenenth and his brother
Rama. In 1943, he would be only 13 and his brother Rama even younger. Here
Kenneth is married to a Helen and Rama is married to a Jean. Rama is such an
unusual name it seems odd to find another Rama in connection with a Kenenth,
but the age is a problem, for them to be either married or working in
shipbuilding.

I do find matching entries for Kenneth and his wife Helen Braun in Colorado
Springs, where his obituary says they lived afte getting married in

An obituary for Kenneth came up in a later search, giving names of additional
family connections, filling in some gaps. The references to famliy members
and his mother's name indicates that sdhe was divorced at some point form
Kenneth's father Rama. This was probably in Oklahoma, before we find Rama in
Arizona in the mid-1930s, or in Arizona soon after they moved out there. I
have not found a 1940 census record for Beatrice and the children.

The record of marriage to Inez L Jenkins in Prescott, Arizona was in October
1939. But then no subsequent record of Inez has been found. Rama's wife at
the time of death in Alaska was Ruth Elizabeth Hopkins.

------------
Kenneth Paul Terry, 80, of Farmington, passed gently away in the early hours
of Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, surrounded by his immediate family.

Kenneth was born, Feb. 10, 1930, in Weatherford, Okla., to Rama and Beatrice
Terry. Kenneth enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1948, and served a tour of duty
during the Korean War as a forward air controller in the battle of Chosin
Reservoir. After serving in the Marine Corps, Kenneth joined the Air Force as
a Staff Sergeant. During his final stint in the Air Force, he met Helen Braun
in Spokane, Wash. They married and made their home in Colorado Springs, Colo.

In 1961, the young family moved to Farmington, where Kenneth became an air
traffic controller. He spent his career of 21 years serving at the Farmington
Airport tower facility. He was an avid photographer and enjoyed hunting and
shooting sports. He was also a presenter for the Victim Impact Panel, making
presentations that described the effect that drunk driving deaths have on
families.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his son, Martin Paul Terry; his father, Rama
Terry; his mother, Beatrice Lebbs;
his brothers, Bill Terry Sr., Roger Tripp (Rama Allen Terry) and Daniel Wood;
and nephews, Michael Terry and the Rev. Bill Terry Jr.

[Note one son reported as dying before his father was Martin Paul, then below
survivors include a son Paul. Would this be a different son with the same
name as Martin Paul's middle name?]

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen Hilda (Braun) Terry;
sons, David, Mark and Paul; daughter, Teresa Terry-Elliott;
brother, Thomas Terranova; stepfather, Merle Lebbs;
eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Notes for Keziah TERRY

Some have understood this name as Keziah, which was a common name in that
period. I have never seen Roziah, which is in the transcription of her
father's will. The actual document does look like the intended name was
Roziah. Family sources sometimes list her as Kezia, which was usually spelled
Keziah.

Her record of marriage to James Scott also reports her as Keziah.

Excerpt from the Will of Benjamin M Terry Sr, probated 26 September 1771,
Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

"Item, I lend to my daughter Rozia Murphy two negros namly Harry and Tillie,
during her natural life and after her Desease [decease] to be equally divided
between her children. She the said Rozia, had by her former husband James
Scott and all her other children that she has or should have by her present
husband Richard Murphy."

-----------------------
Kezia was the daughter of Benjamin Terry, Sr and Elizabeth Dickerson of
Pittsylvania Co, Virginia, at least that's where they lived for the last
several years of his life and where Benjamin's will was proved in 1771. His
will is the proof for the marriage of Richard Murphy and Kezia in addition to
the fact that they sold land that she had purchased as Kezia Scott, prior to
the move to North Carolina.

They went to Roane Co, the part that became Surry Co. James Scott, Kezia's
first husband by whom she had five children, John, Benjamin, Lucy, Elizabeth
and Sarah, not necessarily in that order, and in addition to Peter Terry
(named after her brother) and Joseph, she and Richard had Mary Murphy who
married Aaron Wright in Surry Co, went with the families when they all moved
to Lincoln Co about 1800 but moved back to Surry Co according to a descendant
of Mary and Aaron's, about 1805, which was before Kezia died in 1809.

Daniel Murphy and Richard Murphy are two separate people.
1. Daniel Murphy born circa 1734/6 possibly in NC (wife unknown/not certain)
is the father of William Murphy (husband of Nancy Hornbeak) and grandfather of
Reverend Richard Daniel Murphy.

2. Richard Murphy was born 1738 in Virginia he is the husband of Keziah
Terry-Scott they had three children Joseph Murphy, Peter T Murphy, and Mary
Murphy. Richard and Keziah's children are confirmed in a lawsuit between
Richard Murphy and Zadock Riggs that went on for over ten years. Richard and
Keziah's children and most of their grandchildren are mentioned in this
lawsuit many times through the years. There is no doubt who thier children
are.

Lela James June 24, 1928 - October 27, 2010

After 82 years of bringing kindness and happiness to those on Earth, Lela
James departed this life and entered Heaven on October 27, 2010. She was born
in Spiro, OK to wonderful parents, Lewis Lafayette and Ellen Terry, and was
raised in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas and California. She graduated from

After her marriage to David Myrddin James in June of 1951, she relocated to
Detroit, MI, where she enjoyed a career as a Secretary with Wyandotte
Chemical, Wyandotte, MI, and as an Executive Secretary for Ford Motor Company,
Research and Engineering, Light Truck Division, Dearborn, MI. Later, Lela
relocated and made Bakersfield, CA her home, again working for Ford Motor
Company and also Executive Secretary to the CEO of Mohawk Oil, later
relocating to Phoenix, AZ, where she was the Executive Secretary to the CEO of
Sperry Federal Credit Union from which she retired in 1991.

After retiring, Lela moved to Vancouver, WA in 1995 where she made her final

2008.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents Lewis and Ellen,
her brothers: Raymond Terry, Ward Terry, Eugene (Gene) Terry, Carl Ronald
Terry, Harold Dean Terry, and
her sister: Edith Mary Jo Ayers.

Lela was an exceptional lady with a passion for her four footed and winged
"grandchildren:" Rocky, Missy, Prince, Abby, Duke and Ginger. She was an
excellent cook and baker and enjoyed crafting and scrapbooking. She will be
missed by all who knew and loved her. But by far, her greatest joy came from
being with her family and her many friends. Her love for her daughters kept
her anchored to Earth.

Lela is survived by her daughters: Ellen Flores and husband, Jim (Snohomish,
WA); Barb Volk (Vancouver, WA) and husband John (Portland, OR);

Lela loved everything beautiful; the sun, the rain, the clouds and even the
cold. For her, everyday held something beautiful. Her legacy to us is to find
joy and beauty in all our doings and to have Hope.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Cascade Park
Care Center, Ray Hickey Hospice House, the RN and CNA staff of the 4th

Along the way somewhere the family lost a year in their memory of when Leo was
born. His official records with Social Security and his death record in
California also report a bireth date in ctober 1910. Thisis impossible, as we
see above, since he was already 9 months old at the tie time of the April 1910
census. Though figuring back form the 9 months report in the 1910 xcensus
seems to give us Spetember as a month of birth, the October date is probably
right, but the year would be 1909.

Notes for Leonard TERRY

Leonard Terry's marriage record is recorded in Floyd County, Kentucky, with no
date and no bride's name. Two other records lower down on this page have a
marriage date in April and May 1819. So Leonard's marriage was before April
in 1819.

"Leonard was engaged to Peggy Hamilton before Polly. No marriage ever took
place. However, a consent to marry form was filed 4 Jun 1816 in Floyd County
Kentucky."

There is no record of Leonard in the 1860 census. His wife Polly is
enumerated in their son Isom's house. Since Leonard and Polly (Mary) had
their own household in 1850, in Kentucky, it looks like Leonard died before
the 1860 census. And during that time, they moved to Arkansas. It is likely
Leonard died in Kentucky before Isom moved his famliy.

There is a probate index entry that appears to be for Leonard. The name is
spelled Lenard, and it is dated 1866. The entry indicates it is the Estate of
Lenard Terry but gives no details of death or contents of the will.

"I was very surprised to find an 1860 will and 1866 probate record. It almost
looks like his wife, Polly, moved to Arkansas with Isom and Leonard stayed in
Kentucky. That will is on file in the courthouse, but not listed in any of
the indexes on the internet."

Texas Birth Index, 1903-1997
Lester Terry
Birth 10 Apr 1923 Orange County
Certificate #23353

It is reported that Chester and Lester were twins. The list of children above
has both Lester and Chester, but I found that the birth Index summary list has
only Chester, not Lester, born in Orange County, Texas. Another Chester was
born close to the same time also, but in Roberts County, Texas, named Chester
Hugh.

Chester is reported born on 10 April 1923, and Chester Hugh on 9 May 1923. I
wondered if the birth certificate was made out incorrectly, with the name
being written Lester instead of Chester, or the name Lester being incorrectly
typed onto the summary Index list for the year as Chester, maybe under the
influence of the next certificate in the name of Chester. But later a death
record was found for each child, a day apart in July of the same year.

The Texas birth index for 1923 lists only the name of Chester, while the birth
certificates search onlne produces a certificate only in the name of Lester.

The twins died one day apart.
