Notes for Marion Miles TERRY

A grave marker for one Miles Terry in the Ft Douglas Cemetery reports his birth
date was 8 October 1880. This is the same cemetery where William and Jane are
buried, and other children we know from the censuses and other sources are
also linked to their profile.

The memorial for Miles in Find a Grave has the name James Miles Terry, while
the monument marker on his grave has only the name Miles. Being born in
October 1880, he would not have been reported in the 1880 census, when the
only child there was Mason Terry, age 2. On 29 february 2016 I submitted
informaoitn clarifying and documenting Marion Miles and James Mason Terry, and
this was graciously added to the FAG profile for Miles by the memorial
manager.

Terry, Mason W M 2 Son AR AR AR
Self, Betty W F 20 (Cannot read relationship) Cannot read or write AR AR AR

In the 1900 and 1910 census, the child matching Mason is listed as James M.
His age matches, at age 22 in 1900, and birth date reported as December 1877.
This is almost 3 years before the reported birth of Miles Terry. This James
M, however, is apparently where the original creator of Miles' FAG memorial
got the name James. But we now see that James M is James Mason and Miles is a
different child, born about 3 years after James M. Family sources also report
this name James and descent to the current generation.

"Sam Terry is my uncle. He is the son of Mason Terry [and the] grandson of
William Terry, and the great-grandson of Isom Terry. The Gus Terry who wrote
the letter is also the son of William Terry."
-- Barbara Nelson, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 4 February 2016

But in 1900 a child matching Miles Terry is also reported, as the next-born
child after James M(ason). This is Marion M. The M matches the name Miles on
the grave. The birth date for this Marion M Terry is October 1880, a perfect
match for the date of birth of Miles Terry in the Ft Douglas Cemetery. Thus
James' middle name is Mason, and Miles' first name is Marion. There is no
James Miles.

In his profile on Find a Grave, Miles is named James Miles. As discussed
above, it appears the creator of the profile has linked Miles to James M in
the censuses. But in the census James M's age in the censuses match the child
reported in the 1880 census as Mason Terry, age 2 in the June 1880 census.
This is before Miles was born, if the date on his grave is correct. Census
ages would make James Mason Terry born in about 1877.

[Following note provided by Orville Body Jenkins 29 February 2016]
Note on Terry children: The child named James M in the 1900 and later censuses
is James Mason, matching the first and only child in the 1880 census for
William and Jane Terry. James Mason Terry was reported born in December 1877,
while Miles' birth date on his grave is 8 Oct 1880, after the 1880 census. The
name Mason is also attested in family sources, matching the 1880 census for
Mason Terry, age 2.

Miles is listed in the 1900 census as Marion M, with birth date Oct 1880.

Both James M(ason) and Marion M(iles) are listed in the 1900 census.

Notes for Martin Paul TERRY

Kenneth Paul Terry's obituary is confusing in providing the names of his sons.
Among the sons listed as predeceasing heir father is Martin Paul. But one of
the surviving sons is named as Paul Terry. Would he have had two sons with
the same name Paul? Perhaps the compiler of the obit appearing on the funeral
home's website got confused.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his son, Martin Paul Terry; his father, Rama

his brothers, Bill Terry Sr., Roger Tripp (Rama Allen Terry) and Daniel Wood;

[Note one son reported as dying before his father was Martin Paul, then below
survivors include a son Paul. Would htis be a different son with the same

Members of the family were reported in the 1909 and 1910 Charlotte, North
Carolina, City Directory. A Mrs Mary Keith appears at first to be Mary
Constance Terry Keith, and Samuel M is her son. But this Mary E Keith (a
widow) is not Mary Constance, because our Mary Constance was reported in
Chattanooga again in the 1910 census. I have not been able to identify this
Elliot M in the directory as part of John and Mary Constance's family.

But Samuel M does appear to be the son of Mary Constance Terry and John Bailey
Keith. The identity of the elder Mary in this directory listing is uncertain.
Margaret is the name of a cousin of Samuel, but of different parents from
Marsh. Called Maggie in the 1909 directory, this may be the Maggie reported
as a 5-year-old cousin in Mary and John B Keith's household in 1900.

In 1880, Mary is reported as a widow, living in the household of her uncle
George W Woodward. I think she is George's niece by marriage. The
relationship seems to be through her husband's Self family. Nathaniel Self's
mother was Mary Woodward, George's sister.

The name and designation of the two children is confusing. Elizabeth Self
appears to be Mary's daughter, but she has the same designation as Robert
Terry. They are reported as Son/Daughter of the . The two children have the same birth states reported for
themselves and parents. They would appear to be siblings, both children of
Mary. Then why the different surnames?

Also, June Yeager, a granddaughter of Elizabeth, reports to me that Elizabeth
was the only child of Mary and Nathaniel before he died.

Arkansas marriage records report that George and Mary married in 1881. There
is a conflict between the Arkansas marriage record reporting their marriage on
20 August 1881, while her grave reports she died on 1 April 1881. It is
likely the death date is wrong on the gravestone. There are numerous
instances of this in families I have researched.

There are two memorials for Mary on Find a Grave. Both have the surname
spelled Woodard instead of Woodward.

The first was posted on Nov 6 2008. when I found it in early November 2013,
the name was Marie Terry Woodard, though the gravestone in the photo said Mary
Woodard. But after I transcribed it thusly, about three days later it had
been corrected to Mary Terry Woodard. This memorial includes a photo of the
gravestone, to confirm that the death date inscribed is indeed 1 April 1881,
even though Arkansas marriage records report she married George W Woodward on
20 August 1881. Her real death and burial date is unknown.

Notes for Mary Ellen TERRY

1860 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 6 July, Militia District 972, PO

Joseph Terry 46 M Farmer-Baptist Preacher SC (b abt 1813)
Dovina Terry 37 F NC (b abt 1822)
Mary E Terry 16 F GA (b abt 1844, 1843 from family records)

I remember my grandmother, Julia Virginia (Jennie) Terry, telling me about her
cousins the Connallys in Texas. I particularly remember her cousin Thomas
Terry Connally, who was a US Senator from Texas at that time. But I do not
remember knowing how we were kin. Mary Ellen Terry was the Terry through whom
we were kin to the Connallys.

I was just a young child when I remember my grandmother telling me about her
family. Mamma Jennie probably told me very much I had forgotten in the
interim, before beginning my family research as an adult. She also probably
told me at that time that she was born in Texas but I did not remember that.
I had to work it out through census reports I gradually discovered.

The 1860 census reports Mary Ellen as 16 years old. However, family sources
indicate her birthday is 8 August 1844. This would mean she had not had her
16th birthday yet when the census was taken in July. This is just one more
example of how people in that era did not focus on the details like specific
dates and ages, with which our modern information age is obsessed.

Mary Ellen Terry married Nathaniel Edwin Connally shortly after the census,
and they had one child, a girl named Eddie/Eddy, in September 1863. A
previous child named Slade had died shortly after being born. Nathaniel was
killed in the Civil War, at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia in 1863,
not long before Eddie's birth in September 1863. Marry Ellen married
Nathaniel's brother Jones.

Before the 1870 census, they moved to Texas, as many other Terry-related
families did in the period after the Civil War.

The son listed as A Connally would be Andrew and J is James. These are the
two sons of Ann Hunter, Jones' first wife. Daughter E Connally would be Eddy,
born after her father died, Mary Ellen and Nat's daughter. The last child,
1-year-old A Connally, would be Arizona, the first child Mary Ellen had with
Jones.

Mary Ellen was the second wife of Jones Connally, after his wife Ann C Hunter
died. Her first husband was his younger brother Nathaniel Edwin Connally.

In his genealogy posted on Ancestry World Tree
(http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=bigwills&id=I43141, no
longer online), Johnny L Williams reports that Mary Ellen died at Eddy,
McLennan, County, Texas. Eddy is about 10 miles south of Waco, and is now
called Bruceville-Eddy. This is close to Lorena, which is about 5 miles from
Waco on I-35. Lorena is the town nearest to the place where my grandmother
Julia Virginia Terry was born in 1880. Julia Virginia's father Thomas Duncan
was a 1st cousin to Mary Ellen.

I have discovered the connections that make the Terry-Jenkins descendants kin
to the Connallys of McLennan County. The most famous of this line of
Connallys was senator Thomas Terry Connally. Thomas Terry Connally was a son
of Mary Ellen Terry. As a daughter of Joseph and Dovina Terry, Mary Ellen was
a first cousin to Thomas Duncan Terry, Julia Virginia's father. By common
reckoning, Mary Ellen is thus a 2nd cousin to my grandmother Julia Virginia
Terry Jenkins. By technical reckoning, Family Tree Maker tells me Mary Ellen
and Julia Virginia are 1st cousins once removed.

Our common reckoning tells us that Julia Virginia was a 3rd cousin to Mary
Ellen's son Thomas Terry Connally. FTM says Thomas Terry Connally and Julia
Virginia Terry are 2nd cousins.

The above collection reports Miles was born in 1750, but reports his mother as
Rachel Manson. Records indicate his father did not marry Rachel Manson until
1759. Other sources report a first wife, a Cheraw native woman named
Cheepoake Harris. The people's name was written as Seraw or Saura in early
Virginia and North Carolina records. Cheepoake died in 1758, which would
match with a remarriage by William in 1759.

"A full blooded Cheraw Indian. Cheraw often written as Saraw or Saura in early
VA & NC records. The Cheraw Indians ceasd to exist as a tribe around 1730 and
were absorbed into the related Catawba and Cherokee Tribes, but most seem to
have become the mixed-blood "Lumbee" of Robeson County Indians. Cheraw
Cheepoake was the first wife of fur tader William Terry of Botetourt County,
Virginia. Only two of their children (Esther Terry and Miles "Devil Jett"
Terry) had offspring. Cheepoake died when Miles was a baby, and William
remarried."

looking for general information about my great-grandmother's family and I see
you have Devil Jett or Miles Terry listed and then his son Thomas Miles Terry
1787-1852. I also saw you or your page mentioned Floyd County [Kentucky]. I
... sort of think he was the man who started a new family and left my great-gm
Martha Patsy Jane Terry. ... I do not know a great deal about Devil Jett
other than I find his name mysterious. I am further descended through the
Jett family and see no connection in the way back between the Terry and the
Jett family of the area."

-----------------------
I am the great-granddaughter of Mary Jane Terry Jett 1877-1897. Her family
goes back to parents Miles and Luraney Johnson Terry, grandparents Isaac and
Barbara Gabbard Terry, and then great-grandparents Thomas Miles Terry
1797-1852 who was married to Martha Jane or Patsy Johnson in Breathitt County.
This Thomas Miles was child of Miles B. or Devil Jet and Hannah Horton.
Siblings were Rachel, Annie, Leonard, and Susanna Elizabeth.

It is the story that this Thomas Miles left Patsy and children and took off
and remarried and had a different family up in Floyd County. I was just
trying to be sure I had right person. I was also wondering about the name
Devil Jett as I am a Jett but not sure why or what Devil Jett means. No
insult but my Grandmother said we were not that old bad Curt Jett's bunch and
I know she meant the feuding and killing Curtis Jett. I do not think he was
related (well, not any more closely than us) to Devil Jet.
