Samuel was reported in the 1850 census with his father Tho as Terry and
famliiy. It is not clear if his mother was this wife Mary or Thomas' first
wife Martha (Patsy) Johnson. We have not dates of Thomas and Patsy's
separation or Thomas nad Mary's marriage. One indication that Sam might be
Patsy's son is that he was born in Kentucky, while the three younger sons here
were born in Indiana.

Notes for Susanna TERRY

-----------------------
I am the great-granddaughter of Mary Jane Terry Jett 1877-1897. Her family
goes back to parents Miles and Luraney Johnson Terry, grandparents Isaac and
Barbara Gabbard Terry, and then great-grandparents Thomas Miles Terry
1797-1852 who was married to Martha Jane or Patsy Johnson in Breathitt County.
This Thomas Miles was child of Miles B. or Devil Jet and Hannah Horton.
Siblings were Rachel, Annie, Leonard, and Susanna Elizabeth.

It is the story that this Thomas Miles left Patsy and children and took off
and remarried and had a different family up in Floyd County. I was just
trying to be sure I had right person. I was also wondering about the name
Devil Jett as I am a Jett but not sure why or what Devil Jett means. No
insult but my Grandmother said we were not that old bad Curt Jett's bunch and
I know she meant the feuding and killing Curtis Jett. I do not think he was
related (well, not any more closely than us) to Devil Jet.

Notes for Thomas TERRY

Family information handed down in one of the Terry lines gives us some info on
the family of Lewis Terry. Jacque Watkins reports on information she received
from Terry descendants in a cousin line of my grandmother Julia Virginia Terry
Jenkins.

"... Don Johnston, and whenever I talked with him, he was matter of fact that
his information was a true account from his wife's family. He stated that:
Lewis Terry's parents: Thomas Terry (1732-1818) and Nancy Dalton (daughter of
Robert Dalton and Mary Key). Thomas Terry was the son of Joseph Terry and
Judith Crawford (daughter of David Crawford and Ann Anderson). Also, marriage
date for Lewis and Constance 1809 in Greenville, South Carolina."
-- Jacque Watkins, email correspondence to Orville Boyd Jenkins, September
2008

Despite Don's certainty about this information, I can find no record of a
marriage of Ann Anderson to Captain David Crawford, and details are well
documented of his marriage to Elizabeth Smith in 1695. Records report
Elizabeth Smith was born in 1665 and died in 1767, which is not very likely.
(She would have been 102.) Since David is reported to have married Ann
Anderson in 1727, I suspect that there has been a transcription error, with
1767 being substituted for 1727, matching the year David married Ann. (All I
have seen are compilation transcriptions, not the original record books.)

Even so, Ann was not the mother, but the stepmother, of Judith Crawford. The
documented dates and relationships indicate the Judith's mother was Elizabeth
Smith. Ann was not even born until 1708, while Judith was born in 1705! Even
sources reporting Ann as Judith's mother have these dates! It makes you
wonder!

Some other family genealogies provide some details about Thomas Terry, father
of Lewis (Louis) Terry.

The death date of Thoams Terry is also in quesiton. A historical compilation
reports his death in 1804. What looks like his will was proved in 1804. The
difference in county indicates that there were two Thomas Terrys confused
here, one in Hanvoer and one in Fluvanna and Louisa Counties. County names
changed in that era, so that needs ot be checked.

There was some uncertainty for a long time concerning the birth of Thomas
Duncan and Mattie's first child, Jennie (Julia Virginia). Many censuses
reported her birth in Texas, while children reported that she was born in
Georgia.

There was also an early genealogy report of her birth in McLennan County,
Texas (Waco area), but this was disputed by other family tradition
information. Several censuses of her children also reported her birth in
Texas, but some reported Georgia as Jennie's birth place.

I began to think that young Thomas might have gone to Texas with some of his
cousins, who were recorded in McLennan County and Milam County in 1880 and
later. I had been unable to locate Thomas and Mattie in any census for 1880
that might determine their location. Finally in August 2007, I was able to
find a listing in McLennan County. This supports the birth of Jennie there.
Then we know from later information that they were definitely back in Murray
County, Georgia, near other family in the home area through 1900 census.

Thomas Duncan Terry and Mattie Wall married in McLennan County, Texas, 1
January 1880.

Texas, Select County Marriage Index, 1837-1965
Mattie W Wall

I have not yet found a birth certificate for Jennie showing definitely her
birthplace was McLennan County, Texas. Most later records report her birth
state as Texas.

but I cannot figure out exactly how they are kin. We think Mattie's father
was born about 1840, while she was born in 1861. So this cannot be her
brother. Perhaps it is an uncle, a younger brother of her father.

T D Terry and family were in Georgia in June 1900. They appear in the 1900
census in McDonald District, Murray County, Georgia. This census confirms
Thomas D's middle name as Duncan. This name is otherwise attested, but in most
sources he is listed as Thomas D Terry. The last child's name looks like Orda
in the handwriting of the enumerator. The birth states reported for the
children indicates that Tom and Mattie moved from McLennan County, Texas,
where Jennie was born, before 1884, when Nannie was born. I have no other
details concerning their presence or the move from Texas back to Tom's home
area in Georgia.

Mattie's obituary from the Marlow newspaper reported that the Duncan family
moved from Murray County, Georgia, to Marlow on 1 January 1900. Yet we see
that the whole family was enumerated at their Murray County, Georgia,
residence. So someone was at that residence in June 1900. We know they were
there later in 1900 or early 1901, since their eldest daughter Julia Virginia
(Jennie) married in Marlow in March 1901.

The specific date of the move to Marlow is puzzling, since they obviously
could not have moved in one day, probably even if they had taken the train.
Does the date refer to the date they left Georgia? Or the date they arrived
in Marlow? At any rate it was not before the June 1900 census in Murray

miles west of Marlow in January 1903.

Julia had been married to Joseph Asa Jenkins about 9 years at the time of this
census, and shows up as wife of Joseph Asa.

The Terry family were in Marlow about 1900, since the oldest daughter Julia
Virginia married Joseph Asa Jenkins in March 1901. We have seen that they
were in Georgia until after the 1900 census, so they must have arrived in
Oklahoma near the end of the year. Joseph Asa Jenkins' first wife Hester
(Hattie) died in Marlow, in September 1900, after the 1900 census in Chickasaw
Nation.

Yet the census reports that even the last child of Thomas Duncan born after
that time was born in Georgia. This does not track. It is not clear why or
how Julia Virginia would be in Oklahoma about 4 years before the last child
was born in Georgia.

It appears the last child (Rama, born in June 1904, from family records) was
born in Oklahoma, rather than Georgia as the census reports. Rama is the only
child who does not appear in the 1900 census in Murray County, Georgia. Later
records on Rama confirm that his birth place was what became Oklahoma, though
it was Chickasaw Nation when he was born there. (The State of Oklahoma came
into being in November 1907.)

In the 1920 census, Rama is correctly reported as born in Oklahoma. TD and
Mattie are still on the farm in Richland Township, near Marlow, and Rama is
still at home with them, at 15 years old. The enumerator spells the family
name as Tery. Thomas' mother is reported as born in South Carolina, instead
of North Carolina.

There is a woman whose name appears to be Louies (for Louise -- it is hard to
make out all names in the poor, scrawling hand of the enumerator). She is
described as a daughter. She is 23 years old, and was born in Georgia. At
age 23, she would have been born sometime in 1896. This person does not match
any child in any previous census or any family information. This is where
Clarice should be in the birth order. It looks like the enumerator has named
her Louise and misspelled that.

Listed after Louise is a man named Burt, age 32, described as a son-in-law,
presumably the husband of Louise. There is a child, also, Tery S, age 2 years
and 1 month. One interesting fact is that this census lists all these last
three as also surnamed Terry (Tery). This Burt is Bert Lewis, Clarice's
husband. Burt's parents are said to be born in Alabama. Tery S (Terry) Lewis
is their son, Terry Stanton Lewis. The addled enumerator also reported the
boy Terry as a girl.

Jennie also reports that her father Thomas Duncan Terry died at 6:00 PM on 23
July 1935.

Additional Children
Three other children are reported in notes on this family, written by my
mother Lou Ila Gregory Jenkins in about 1954 or 1955. These were stored with
other family papers until rediscovered in May 2007. Lou has the memory of
writing down these notes from Julia Virginia Terry Jenkins on an extended
visit in her home in Chickasha, Oklahoma. But but no source is stated in the
actual pages.

One of the three children recorded in the list of Jennie's brothers and
sisters in these notes is a daughter named Carrie Lee Terry, born 13 December
1885. Carrie does not appear in the family's record in the 1900 or later
censuses. If this is truly a child of Thomas Duncan and Mattie Terry, it
would appear that this child died before the 1900 census. Her burial
information was reported a few years later in a Find-a-Grave memorial. I have
found her in no public documents.

Two other brothers are also reported in these notes. They were born after
Jennie, and likewise do not show up on any of the censuses. They are Thomas
Everett Terry, born on 27 August 1882, and William Earnest Terry, born 3
November 1887. I have not found them in any historical documents. Perhaps
they died before the 1900 census, or Thomas Everett could have married early,
or been living with other relatives. William Earnest would have been less
than 3 years old in 1900, so he is harder to account for. The graves of both
are found in Eton Cemetery in the home area of the family before their parents
moved with the family to Indian Territory.

However, this question is complicated by the 1910 census report on the Terry
family. This census reports that Mattie has borne 7 children, and all 7 are
alive. These are the seven accounted for in the censuses. Jennie was the
oldest, and is the only one away and married in her own household in the 1910
census.

So who are these other three children that appears in the list of the children
of Thomas Duncan and Mattie in these notes on the family? Other details fit
what is already known about the family, but fill in many more details and add
information on Thomas Duncan and Mattie's parents. Thus these are valid notes
from Jennie or some other Terry-Wall source, written down by Lou Jenkins.
They were found with other family information, notes, records and newspaper
articles on the families of Lou Ila Gregory and her husband Orville Lee
Jenkins.

The 1900 census records that Duncan and Mattie had been married 20 years.
This means it was later than June 4 1879, and before June 1880, in order to
say they had already been married 20 years at the June 1900 census. Based on
the birth of the first child Jennie (Julia Virginia), I had determined they
were married no later than 8 April 1880.

In May 2007, I learned an exact marriage date from the notes discovered by my
mother. Thomas and Mattie were married 1 January 1880.

The last few years of his life Thomas Duncan suffered from a dementia that got
steadily worse. The symptoms are described by his wife in numerous letters to
her daughter Jennie (Julia Virginia Jenkins), found in the memorabilia of her
son Orville Lee Jenkins (father of this writer). It sounds like what is now
called Alzheimer's.

Thomas' wife Martha describes over and over in these letters what a trial her
husband's behavior was to her. She, of course, could not understand what was
happening. She complains that she tries hard to make him "be good" when they
go to visit someone, or when they have company. He had good days and bad
days, but the bad days became steadily more and worse till his death in 1935.
Meanwhile Mattie passed away in 1932. I have not found out how Thomas was
taken care of after Mattie died.

Thomas' gravestone has only the year of birth and death. This information was
updated along with links to other family members when I submitted this
information in February 2015.

Notes for Thomas Everett TERRY

Thomas Everett Terry, along with two others in this family, is reported in
notes on the family discovered by Lou Ila Jenkins in her own handwriting, but
forgotten, stored away with other family papers discovered in May 2007. From
the dates of birth and death, they appear to have been written in 1954 or
1955.

The 1910 census for the family of Thomas and Mattie Terry, however, reports
that Mattie had 7 children and that all 7 have survived. This does not allow
for the 3 extra names that show up in the list of children in the complete and
systematic family information recorded in those notes by Lou.

The source of the information is not identified on the pages of notes. Lou
does not remember exactly when or from whom the information was obtained, but
places it likely at the time of an extended visit with Jennie and Joe Jenkins,
her parents-in-law. These three children appear in the sequence of their
birth dates in the list with the other known children recorded in the census.

The other two "new" children are Carrie Lee, born 13 December 1885, and
William Earnest Terry, born 3 November 1887. These names were found on graves
in the cemetery of Eton, Murray, where the Terry family was living before they
moved to Indian Territory. Thomas and his two siblings Carrie and William
died a few days apart in August 1888, apparently in the Yellow Fever epidemic
plaguing the southeastern USA since the great Epidemic of 1876 in Georgia. It
was still raging in other cities in surrounding states in 1888.

Thanks to C East, who posted the memorial on Find a Grave which reported the
grave of Thomas, and someone named on FAG only as James for the graves of
Carrie and Ernest.

Oddly, for some reason the memorial for Thomas on Find a Grave had his name as
Thomas L Terry, even though the photo of the grave posted (by another person)
on the memorial clearly reads Thomas E, matching the full name from his sister
Jennie, Thomas Everett. The name Everett continues in the family as Jennie
named one of her children James Everett Jenkins. In proposing updates to the
memorial I received a transfer to become tender of this memorial for thomas on

Notes for Thomas Louis TERRY

Thomas L Terry is one of the many Terry men with the middle initial L. I had
surmised that this was Lewis (Louis) or possibly Lafayette. I later found a
note on a Terry Family discussion in the Terry Family Historian list that did
indeed report his full name as Thomas Lewis Terry.

Thomas and his father Joseph were registered in the 1864 census for
reorganizing the Georgia Militia. They were living in Terrell County at that
time.

Thomas moved to Texas before the 1870 census. In the 1870 census, Thomas was
reported as a single man Farming, in a household apparently with his farmer, a
J Roach, in Brazos County, Texas. Thomas is living next door to his sister
Mary Ellen Terry Connally and her second husband Jones Connally. Just a
couple of houses further past the Joneses is Mary Ann Thomas and her children.
Thomas later married Mary Ann's daughter Mary Elizabeth Thomas.

Thomas' parents moved to Texas later. His father sold land in Georgia in
1878, in preparation for moving to Texas. In 1880 Thomas and his parents are
together again with other family members nearby in Milam County, Texas, near
San Antonio, which is in Bexar County. It is likely several families of the
Terrys moved together or in close succession. There are several family units
in Milam County, Bexar County, and farther north in McLennan County in the
1880 census. He is living 3 houses away from Mary Elizabeth's family and they
are recorded on the same page of the 1870 census.

Thomas married a Texas-born woman after he got there. But we learn from other
sources that her parents were from Germany. See details in Notes for Mary
Elizabeth Thomas. In the 1880 census Thomas L Terry is 33 years old and is
married to Mary E, age 26. They have no children yet. This census does not
report how long a couple have been married. Living with them is Thomas'
younger brother William Walker Terry, listed as William W, age 19.

Their first cousin Thomas Duncan Terry, son of William and Julia Terry, is in
McLennan County, and he also married a local girl, Martha (Mattie) Wiley Wall,
whose family had migrated from North Carolina, where Mattie was born. Their
first child Julia Virginia (Jennie) was born there in December 1880.

This family later moved back to the Terry home county of Murray in Georgia,
but about 1900 moved to Oklahoma, where Jennie married a Texas man who had
moved to Indian Territory, Joseph Asa Jenkins. They became my grandparents.
Our family has all these Terry cousins strung from central and western Texas
to northern Oklahoma and western Arkansas.

Living with them in the same house are Thomas and Wiliam's parents Joseph and

all one household and numbered as all one family.

Before the 1900 census, Thomas had moved farther west, to San Angelo, where he
lived the rest of his life.

being listed in the relationship of Servant, his occupation is shown as Day

This census tells us that Mary E's parents came from Germany. Their birth
place was unreported in the 1880 census. There are many German families in
Central and northern Texas. There were still whole German towns, with schools
taught in German during my lifetime. Only in the late 1900s has this changed
appreciably. The Oktoberfest is now an even bigger state celebration in Texas
than it was when I was younger. Even the Irish and Scottish families
celebrate Oktoberfest.

At this point I still did not know Mary E's middle or maiden name. In
September 2008, a cousin in the Terry line contacted me with the information
that she was a great great niece of Mary Elizabeth and Thomas. She wrote:

"I think that your Mary Elizabeth was my ggreat aunt. Her last name was
Thomas. I found a death certificate for Mary Elizabeth Terry d on May 14, 1920
in San Angelo buried in Fairmont cemetery." The maiden then appears to be
Thomas. This is a bit puzzling, since I was unaware of Thomas as a German
surname. I finally found this Thomas family in the 1870 census in Brazos
County, Texas, about 2 doors down from T Terry, who matches our details for
Thomas Lewis/Louis Terry. See more details about this Thomas family in Notes
for Nicholas Thomas and for his daughter Mary Elizabeth Thomas, wife of Thomas
Louis Terry.

The 1900 census also now tells us when Thomas and Mary married. They have
been married 26 years according to this report. This would mean they married
about 1874. However, their marriage is recorded with an exact birth date of
08 January 1871, Brazos County, Texas at Mr. Thomas' home by Elder Ball. I
first got this information from Jacque Watkins in September 2008.

Note that the third person in the household would appear to be their son,
Thomas L Terry, Jr. He is even listed as Terry, Thomas L Jr. And yet he is
listed as a nephew, not a son. The birth states of his parents would also
indicate a different father. I have not been able to figure out who among
Thomas' brothers might have had a son also named Thomas L.

This is quite likely, however, since there is a distinct pattern in this Terry
line of brothers naming their sons after brothers. But in that case, the
enumerator erred in listing him as "Jr." If this is really Thomas L, Jr, this
would have to mean he is the son of this Thomas L Terry. If this is really a
nephew of Thomas L, this would have to mean that this Thomas L also had a
brother named Thomas L, which we know is not the case.

The birth of the younger Thomas L's father in Texas, though, still presents a
puzzle, since none of this Terry family had been there long enough to have
been born in Texas before 1880. The younger Thomas is 17, born in May 1883,
according to this census. He is in the first generation of Terrys in this
line to have been born in Texas. There are simply errors of one sort or
another in this census (surprise, surprise!), which I will need more
information to unravel.

After writing the above analysis, I went back over some old discussion groups
to review old names on which I earlier had information, to try to make
connections to new information I had later complied. I found notes from
Jacque Watkins, also researching this family line, referring to Thomas Lewis
Terry, who matches the details of the person listed as "Thomas L Terry, Jr" in
the 1900 census. She has that person's birth as April 1882, which is one year
different from my reading of the birth date in the 1900 census.

It appears in a list of names of this family, and place names in Texas and
Arizona match. It seems from these notes that it would be safe to interpret
the mixed census identification in 1900 to mean that Thomas Lewis Terry.

I have not yet found this family in the 1910 or 1930 census. But in 1920 they
are still in San Angelo.

Notes for Thomas Miles TERRY

"I linked to your family history page in a websearch via MyHeritage. I was
looking for general information about my great-grandmother's family and I see
you have Devil Jett or Miles Terry listed and then his son Thomas Miles Terry
1787-1852. I also saw you or your page mentioned Floyd County [Kentucky]. I
... sort of think he was the man who started a new family and left my great-gm
Martha Patsy Jane Terry. ... I do not know a great deal about Devil Jett
other than I find his name mysterious. I am further descended through the
Jett family and see no connection in the way back between the Terry and the
Jett family of the area."

This Thomas Miles was child of Miles B. or Devil Jet, and Hannah Horton.
Siblings were Rachel, Annie, Leonard, and Susanna Elizabeth.

It is the story that this Thomas Miles [Terry] left Patsy and children and
took off and remarried and had a different family up in Floyd County. I was
just trying to be sure I had right person. I was also wondering about the
name Devil Jett as I am a Jett but not sure why or what Devil Jett means. No
insult but my Grandmother said we were not that old bad Curt Jett's bunch and
I know she meant the feuding and killing Curtis Jett. I do not think he was
related (well, not any more closely than us) to Devil Jet.

An 1850 census record in Carter County, Kentucky appears to be for this same
Thomas Terry with his second wife, reported here as Mary. The location
matches with a death record for Thomas Terry in Carter County in 1852.

Leonard Terry 14 M b Indiana [b abt 1836]
Isaac Terry 12 F b Indiana [b abt 1838]
Elijah Terry 8 F b indiana [b abt 1842]

One of the sons of Thomas and Mary here is named Isaac, one of three born in
Indiana. If this is the same Thomas Terry whose first wife was Martha (Patsy)
Johnson, this is Thomas' second son named Isaac. He and Patsy had a son in
1820 whom they named Isaac. He is linked to Martha's FAG memorial. With the
time gap, as well as location of birth, of the last three sons, it appears
that Samuel is the son of Thomas' first wife, Martha Patsy Johnson, and the
three Indiana-born sons are the sons of Mary.

There are too many missing records and details to conclude at this point.
Additionally, there are many individuals among the Terry, Johnson and Combs
families, of near ages with the same given names. Along with this, these
families share a broad set of preferred names that kept getting used over and
over, further confusing parentage in records and family memories. And all
three of these families intermarried in several generations. So missing
details in records make it difficult to discern specific relationships and
parentage in several cases.
