Notes for Tommy TERRY

Maris married William Walker Terry on 2 Jun 1896. William was born on 27 Aug
1860 in Murray Co, GA. He died on 21 Feb 1919 and was buried in Wells
Cemetery.

They had the following children:
M Rube Terry was born about 1905 in Gleeson, AZ. He died about 1950.
F Sally Terry was born on 15 Dec 1900 in San Angelo, TX. She died about Jul
1970.
M Tommy Terry was born on 26 Jul 1899 in San Angelo, TX. He died on 20 Jun
1977.
M Ewart Anthony Terry was born about 1897 in San Angelo, TX. He died about Jul
1930.

The child most closely matching "Tomy" in the 1910 census is a male child
named Tommy, reported as age 10, younger than Tomy should be if the birth date
reported in 1900 was correct. All factors considered at this point, the child
seems to a son named Tommy. The Wells (Terry) genealogy reports a birth date
of 26 July 1899 for Tommy. This is probably more correct that the 1898 date
in the 1900 census. I cannot account for the difference in reported birth
month, but this has happened in other cases.

But then there is another separate enumeration of Tommy's family for 1910.
They were also enumerated in Gila County near the center of the state. All
the children and their ages match. But in this one Tommy is age 10 and is
reported as a daughter and female! With two reports of being female, I will
put it that way. Also here Tommy's mother Ida is the Head of the home, with
no husband reported, but she is reported as married for 13 years, not divorced
as in the Cochise County report.

Notes for Uriah TERRY

Uriah is reported under a variations of his name. His grave has his name as
Rier. In 1900 the census reported him as Riah, more recognizably a short form
of Uriah. Rier is simply the local pronunciation of Riah, in the common
faashion of adding r to words ending in a vowel. This shows up commonly in
names like Ader (for AdaLavader (for Lavada), Rether (for Aretha), etc. The
1910 census has a more complete name, the Greek variation Urias of the Hebrew
Uriah, known from the Old Testament.

Notes for Washington Eugene TERRY

Eugene's granddaughter Sharon gave me the names of her father and grandparents,
reporting her father's name as Eugene. I also found a 1912 family photograph
that Sharon had posted online, with notes in which she says her father was
born in 1924. We later corresponded by email.

"My father went by Eugene Terry (also "Gene" and "Cherokee"). We were told
his birth name was Washington but that he never wanted to use it. ... My
paternal grandparents were Joe Terry and Carrie Belle Lovin Terry. Their
children were Elsie, Myrtle, Gertie, Leo, Otto, Augusta, Gladys, Eugene, Agnes
and Robert (Bobby)."
-- Sharon Terry, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 14 March 2016

At least one genealogy cites the California Death Index, which reports that
the mother of Eugene Terry, born in Oklahoma 22 Feb 1924 had the maiden name
Lovin.

California, Death Index, 1940-1997
Eugene Terry
Gender Male
Birth 22 Feb 1924 Oklahoma
Death 15 Nov 1997 Stanislaus
Mother's Maiden Name Lovin
Social Security #566-22-3377

The matching SS Death Index record offers no clarifying information.

Born 22 Feb 1924
Died 15 Nov 1997
Last Residence Keyes, Stanislaus, California 95328

Later more complete Social Security records helped clarify the details for
Eugene Terry. Giving the name of his parents, this record also confirms we
have the correct Death Indcex record above for the dates.

U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007
Eugene Terry
Birth 22 Feb 1924 Konawa, Seminole County, Oklahoma
Father Name Joe Terry
Mother Name Belle C Lovin
Death Date 15 Nov 1997
SSN 566223377
May 1942 Name listed as EUGENE TERRY

In some genealogies we find Eugene's wife reported as Lucy Kathryn Winters

Lucy Kathryn Winters
Birth May 19 1935 Forkston, Wyoming, Pennsylvania
Death 2013 Stanislaus County, California
Parents Unknown
Spouse (Washington) Eugene Terry 1924-1997
-- James Tillman Lovin,
http://person.ancestry.com/tree/68379673/person/36185179500/facts?ftm=1

Lucy's birth in Pennsylvania leads us to conclude that Kathryn and Eugene met
after he went to Stanislaus County, California.

For some reason there is no child in the 1930 census to match Eugene, who
should be 6 years old at that time. If this California report is indeed the
for the correct Eugene Terry, where was Eugene in 1930? California death
records also report a Bobby Ray Terry, whose mother was named Lovin, who was
born in 1924. This Bobby also is missing from the 1930 census. Sharon
mentions a child named Bobby Ray also.

Terry Genealogy & History

Terry has the distinction of having over a hundred spelling variations,
including Tarry, Theuret, Theike, Thiele, Thierry, Thoreau, Tieck, Tietze,
Tilke, Tillich, and Torry. Derived from the middle English given-name
"Thierri," which was derived from Old Norman given-name "Theodoric," Terry
means powerful.

Alternatively, in Old French, "thierri" is a potter. The Terry/Thierry form is
generally English; Terry family history traces back to a feudal manor in Kent,
where the Thierry family was granted lands by the Earl of Pembroke in the
1130s or 1140s. Simultaneously in Ireland, Terri branches settled in Cork and
Torrie/Torry branches in Waterford. American Terry family history dates from
1630 in New England.

Several genealogies of different lineages that include the Terry family
include this record as referring to William Terry b 1849-50, and his arrival
from England into the colony of Virginia. I have seen no discussion or other
substantiation to establish that this is the correct William Terry. I am
including this record in courtesy of those who may know more about this era of
the Terry line than I do at this time, and for the historical reference.

Our Terry family (William Barney of South Carolina, son of Lewis Terry) have
the family tradition that they came from Ireland, so this may not be the
correct Terry antecedent. Or there may be an earlier connection to Ireland,
which could quite likely be the case. We do know our Terrys were in the
Virginia and the Carolinas before the American Revolution.

While this record reports arrival in 1679, another arrival record for a
William Terry in Virginia is dated 1679. Alternative birth dates for William
are 1635 and 1649-50.

From the Terry Family Historian, Dec 1983

King William Co. was formed from King and Queen Co. in 1701/02
and King and Queen Co. from New Kent Co. in 1691.

It is possible that the James and Thomas Terry in King William Co. are the
same people that are listed in the New Kent Co. Roll as James Tyrrey and Thom
Tyrey, for both were land speculators. From the amount of land William Terry
was holding, it appears that he was a wealthy man - at least at that time, for
money was very scarce in the Colonies.

James and Thomas Terry received land fo rtransporting "persons" to the Colony.
At the time anyone paying the 6 Pounds Sterling for the trip to the colony of
Virginia would receive 50 acres of land. For those who could not pay there was
the alternative of selling their services for a period from 4 to 7 years and
the one who paid for the transportation would receive the land.

The Terrys transported a good number of indentured servants to the Colonies
and therefore had to be men of wealth. The first Terry land record is for John
Terry - "200 acres of land being upon the main branch of Powell Creek in the
County of James City, 6 July 1648." (Book 2, p. 144)

The next entries were for Thomas Torroy, north of Mattapony River and John
Torry, Charles City Co., in 1686, Stephen Terry, 335 acres in Pamunkoy-nock,
King and Queen Co., 1702, and JamesTerry, 1701 and 1704 land in New Kent Co.,
Parish of St. Peters and St. John Parish in Pamunky-nock. Therefore, it is
probable that James, Stephen and Thomas were brothers. Reference Number:4720

A record collection reports William's son Miles, reported in the genealogy
above, was born in 1750, but reports his mother as Rachel Manson. Records
indicate his father did not marry Rachel Manson until 1759. Other genealogies
also report chidlren born on dates before Rachel's marriage to William.

Other sources report that William was first married to a Cheraw Indian woman
named Cheepoake Harris. The tribal name is found as Seraw or Saurain in early
Virginia and North Carolina records. Cheepoake died "when Miles was a baby,"
which could be from 1850 for a few years. The term "baby" I have seen used
for 6 and 8-year-old chidlren. You would think William would remarry pretty
quickly after the death of his wife. With that in mind, we can think that
Cheepoake died as late as 1758, a few months before the reported remarriage by
William in February 1759 (if that is the sme William Terry).

"A full blooded Cheraw Indian. Cheraw often written as Saraw or Saura in early
VA & NC records. The Cheraw Indians ceasd to exist as a tribe around 1730 and
were absorbed into the related Catawba and Cherokee Tribes, but most seem to
have become the mixed-blood "Lumbee" of Robeson County Indians. Cheraw
Cheepoake was the first wife of fur tader William Terry of Botetourt County,
Virginia. Only two of their children (Esther Terry and Miles "Devil Jett"
Terry) had offspring. Cheepoake died when Miles was a baby, and William
remarried."

Several historical sources match Rachel Manson in marriage to William Terry.
No dates are reported. A marriage record found more recently reports they
were married in 1759, but the place is in Pennsylvania. This Terry family is
associated with Lunenburg County, Virginia, which is in South Central Virginia
(would have been southeastern Virginia in the pre-Civil War era, before West
Virginia seceded form Virginia). It lies one county above the North Carolina
border to the south.

It is noted in sources, however, that Rachel Manson was born in Botetourt
County, where she and William Terry are known to have lived, and where they
both died. At least one son, Miles, was born in Botetourt County. This
county is in the center of the old colony-state of Virginia, now in the west
near West Virginia.

It may be that some historical sources with minimal information have linked
our Rachel Manson and William Terry to a different similar couple in
Philadelphia. On the other hand, we recall that Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
was center of commerce, society and politics in the colonies, and soon became
the capital of the new United States a few years after their marriage. Being
prominent landholders and influential in colonial affairs, this William Terry
may have been in Philadelphia regularly.

This record is only a list of names and dates in a typed compilation in a
publication of the transcribed record of Christ Church, Philadelphia,
1709-1806,, with no further information to identify the listed.

William Terry was a common name in this line of Terrys, and occurs in other
Terry families that show no connection with these Terrys in this era. The
following military record, spars as it is in details, appears to be for
William Terry who was born in 1730 in Orange County, Virginia and died in
Botetourt County of the same state.

William's death is reported to have occurred in Botetourt County. But a
burial record that appears to match him, and is attached to him in some
genealogies, reports his burial in a family cemetery, presumably on Terry
family land, in neighboring Bedford County.

Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots

Some sources report different dates from the major old record compilations,
which are used by most genealogies that clearly follow this Terry lineage.
The following Find a Grave profile has different dates, and this may indicate
only the uncertainty of dates in that era. This FAG memorial reports the same
wife, Rachel Manson, with the same dates, and reports that the place of birth
for both is unknwon, and may have been either Virginia or North Carolina.

The reported occupation as a trapper seems somewhat out of line with what else
we know of William and Rachel, but is not impossible. It may be, however,
that two diffeerent individuals or Terry lineages have been confused hee.
Another indication of this is the geneallogy included below which hs the sme
dates we have, and locates William's death in Botetourt and provides
informatoin abotu his estate there. But it also has a diferent name for his
wife, Rachel Mordock. This warrants investigatoin as a possible avenue to
clrity.But the location.

Note that the FAG memorial reprots that William's parentage is unknown, whicle
the genealogy below reports the normal paretnage of William Terry I (or Sr)
and reports his mother as Keziah Sarah (no maiden name), wheras most
genealogies have no name for William's mother.

William Terry
Birth 1710 Botetourt County, Virginia, USA
Death 1792 Surry County, North Carolina, USA

Parents unknown. The above dob & dod are approximate, the best information we
have at present. Some sources say he died in NC, some say in VA.

His surname is alternately spelled Terriy or Terry. He was a fur trader.

William married Cheepoake Harris in NC. Their known children were Isabell &
Esther, & possibly Jasper, Miles & William. Isabell & Esther both married men
surname Burris.

Some researchers claim that after Cheepoake's death, William married again. I
have no information to say whether this is true or not, and no name of a
possible 2nd wife, so cannot confirm or deny it.

William Terry & Cheepoake Harris have many descendants who have tried to get
more information about them, but we have found nothing further.

However, other genealogies reprot the same dates for William Terry, the
Trapper, as those we report and the place of death as Botetourt County,
Virginia, as shown in most sources and genealogies. Thie following genelaogy
reports the same list of children shown in genealogies that have the dates
given in the above FAG profile for Wililam Terry. William's fathe is also
reported as William Terry Sr here as in the genealogies with the dates
1710-1792, and the same motehr, Keziah Sarah (no maiden name). Most
genealoies have no name for the wife of William Terry Sr.

There is on differtence her that may provide some guidance to clarifying the
identities here, if two families have been confused in sources or genealogies.
The name of William Terry's second wife here is Rachel Murdock, not not Rachel
Manson, as other soruces report. This genealogy reports that Willam's death
place is uncertain, as stated in the FAG above that has the other dates of
birth and death. They share information on his fur trapping, etc, but differ
on his wife's name.

The following genealogy also references the above FAG for William, but adds
info that matcehs the family line we know and the locatoin in Botetourt
County.

One genealogy reports William's full name as William Isom Davis Terry.
Accounting for the second given name Davis, this genealogy also reports that
William's mother was Celia "Sealy" Davis. Other facts, including those
discussed above, indicate that WIlliam's father Isom Terry did not marry Sealy
Davis until 1874, who was his 4th wife. This was 19 years after even this
genealogy reports WIlliam was born!

But this Moulder tree has Celia as the only wife of Isom, when family sources
report reference to 5 wives, and we have the names of 4. Further, the Moulder
tree reports that Isom married Celia Davis in 1850, while we have their
marriage record from 1874 under her later married name Hanley.

Perhaps there was a second son named William at that late stage, whose middle
name was in fact Davis. No record we have seen has a middle name for this
William born in 1855, whose birth date puts him in place as the second child
of Isom and his first wife surnamed Hughes, whose given name has not been
discovered. We note that in the 1860 census, the name of Isham's wife is not
Celia or Sealy but Ceatta. See other discussoin on members of this family for
the identity of Ceatha/Seatha, whom we identify as Seatha Slone.

In the 1900 and 1910 census, the child matching Mason is listed as James M.
This child, however, on Find a Grave memoroals, is named James Miles Terry.
The creator of the memorial may have been in error about his middle name.
Barbara Nelson, a niece of Sam Terry, reports that Sam's father was Mason,
whose father was WIlliam Terry. So it seems this child was named James Mason
Terry.

"Sam Terry is my uncle. He is the son of Mason Terry, grandson of William
Terry, and the great-grandson of Isom Terry. The Gus Terry who wrote the
letter is also the son of William Terry." [Her syntax is unclear; she seems to
be saying that Sam Terry is the grandson of William Terry, but the sentence
structure she used sounds like Mason was the grandson of William. Mason was
the first child of Isom, reported in the It was not stated which son of
William Terry was the father of Mason Terry.]

the first detail I have found related to Margaret's marriage to Isom, other
than family memory relayed by descendants, with some uncertainty. There was
some surmise that Isom and Margaret were not married. But she is reported
here as Divorced and her surname is reported as Terry.

Return to William TERRY

Notes for William Barney TERRY

After starting with information from my Terry family sources and my personal
knowledge, I discovered Terry family information on the Terry Family Website
related to my lineage. Information from this source
(http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~troy/terry/) was originally
correlated with Jenkins Family information.

I then personally reviewed and transcribed the census entries. I found
several spelling errors in the transcriptions on the Terry Family website.
Other sources have been critically evaluated as discovered. New sources have
been added and analyzed from our own family archives.

--------------------------
Terry Genealogy & History

Richard Bates has very good detail on this Terry family line and related
families. He and a couple of others in the Bates line, who appear to have
exchanged information or used the same family sources, report the name of this
person as William Joseph Terry, Sr. Our family received the name as William
Barney Terry.

The name was reported by William's granddaughter, my grandmother, Julia
Virginia (Jennie) Terry, in a comprehensive and fairly detailed list of names
and information on her family. She did not know family names earlier than
William Barney. Other than Bates reference and similar ones on some other
undocumented genealogies, I have seen no record documenting the name William
Joseph for my great great grandfather Terry.

The marriage date from Jennie Terry led to the Georgia marriage record. The
Georgia marriage record has Julia Roberts' name as Julian Robins.

Georgia, Marriage Records From Select Counties, 1828-1978
William Terry
Marriage 26 Jul 1838 Murray, Georgia

It may be that William Joseph is actually the given name, and Barney was a
nickname. If so, Jennie apparently did not know that. However, it seems
unlikely he would be named Joseph, since he had a brother named Joseph Lewis
(Louis) Terry. Further, Barney is documented in the family line, since
William and Constance's son John R Terry named one of his sons Barney. He
also named another son Joseph. C.

Jennie had no birth or death dates for her Terry grandparents. We get
approximate birth dates from the ages recorded in the censuses.

From the 1850 census, we can see that William was born about 1811. In
September 2008, I get further details just discovered by another descendant
and researcher on the Terrys. Jacque Watkins shared with me information from
Thomas Lewis Terry's family Bible. This records an exact birth date for
William, which is exactly the same as that of his brother George C Terry.

Thus if this error is not an error, they were twins, which had not been
indicated in any family sources. I had George's birthday already, and find
that Thomas Lewis recorded same date of 21 July 1810 as William and George's
birth date. He also reports they were born in South Carolina. This confirms
earlier family information that the Lewis' were in Pendleton District, South
Carolina, which I had as William Barney's birth place, before the Terrys moved
to Georgia.

John R, just born at the time of the 1850 census, is missing from this census.
He should be 10 years old in 1860. In early analysis I concluded he must have
died between the 1850 and 1860 census. I did have him on the 1870 census, but
his entry was not transcribed so it went unreported on this page. However, I
later found him with his parents in the 1870 census and with his wife and
family in the 1880 census. I do not know why he does not appear in the census
of 1860.

The last child's name was transcribed on the Terry Family Genealogy website as
Deatha. The name is actually spelled Dialtha in the 1860 census. This appears
to be the full form of the name entered in 1870 as Althia. In 1880, when at
age 21 she is the oldest child still in the home, her name is entered as
Altha. I do not have information for her after she married.

In 1860 I find it interesting that living two doors down from William and
Julia is a woman also named Dialtha. This is Dialtha Peck, wife of W W Peck,
both born in Tennessee.

I find it curious also that Mary Constance is the only child whose middle
initial was not recorded. She is named Constance after her grandmother, wife
of Lewis Terry.

This census gives us Julia's middle name in full for the first time. Though
spelled July here, we know her name was Julia. But this entry may indicate
that she went by Julie, spelled July here.
