Notes for Margaret TERRYWIFE

I have not found a maiden name for Margaret Terry, wife of Isom Terry. She
appears to be the third wife of Isom, and after having one child, Jackson H,
they divorced in Arkansas. Isom's wife Ceatta died about 1863; so Isom must
have married Margaret about 1864; but the 1900 census reports their son Jack's
birthday as June 1864. I have been unable to find her death information or a
burial record, though most of the Terrys were buried in Johnson County, and
many at Ft Douglas.

The first record I found for Margaret was the 1910 census, where she is
reported living in the home of her son Jackson. Here she is reported as
Divorced.

This information on the disposition of her relationship to Isom, and her
surname here as Terry, seems to clear up the some uncertainty some descendants
had about whether Isom and Margaret had actually been married.

I later found the 1880 census, where Margaret is the head of the household
with only her son Jack with her. Here the report of her marital status is
ambiguous. There is one column for Widowed or Divorced. The enumerator
marked this box, but did not designated a W or D. The date given for her
husband Isom's death, however, is 1888. and his wife in the 1880 census is
Celia, this should have meant Divorced.

Because Isom's wife was Celia in 1880, it appears that Isom married Margaret
some time after about 1863, when it is reported his wife Ceatta died. But
they were divorced some time after Jackson's birth around 1865. Isom's family
seems to have been missed in the 1870 census.

Margaret does not appear with her son Jackson's family in 1920, probably
indicating she died before the 1920 census. I have not found her death or
burial information.

Notes for Mary TERRYWIFE

"Thomas Terry left Martha Johnson. Both remarried. Thomas to a Mary, surname
unknown. Martha, to Benjamin Combs."
-- Anonymous comment on the profile of Thomas Terry on FamilySearch,

Leonard Terry 14 M b Indiana [b abt 1836]
Isaac Terry 12 F b Indiana [b abt 1838]
Elijah Terry 8 F b indiana [b abt 1842]

One of the sons of Thomas and Mary here is named Isaac, one of three born in
Indiana. If this is the same Thomas Terry whose first wife was Martha (Patsy)
Johnson, this is Thomas' second son named Isaac. He and Patsy had a son in
1820 whom they named Isaac. He is linked to Martha's FAG memorial. With the
time gap, as well as location of birth, of the last three sons, it appears
that Samuel is the son of Thomas' first wife, Martha Patsy Johnson, and the
three Indiana-born sons are the sons of Mary.

There are too many missing records and details to conclude at this point.
Additionally, there are many individuals among the Terry, Johnson and Combs
families, of near ages with the same given names. Along with this these
families share a broad set of preferred names that kept getting used over and
over, further confusing parentage in records and family memories. And all
three of these families intermarried in several generations. So missing
details in records make it difficult to discern specific relationships and
parentage in several cases.

Notes for Abraham TETER

The Teter name was originally Dieter, which is also found in North America
among German-origin families. Several genealogies report on the generations
of this lineage back to Quirinius Dieter, int he 1500s. I have found no
record of his wife or any dates of other details. From Quirinius genealogies
provide fairly good information about the whole lineage. For many generations
Quirinius' descendants stayed in Schwaigern, Württemburg State, Germany. The
chief city of Württemburg is Stuttgart.

son Abraham Teter

There are various discrepancies between different family genealogies that
report on Abraham Teter and his family. It seems likely that some
genealogists have confused different Teter families. I have found many in
Pennsylvania and Virginia and surrounding states and in the locations where
many moved further west. Differences occur on the places of birth and death
of several members of this family. Sources often have the same date, but
report different places.

Abraham's father Paul is variously reported as born in Lancaster, Lancaster,
Pennsylvania, and simply Virginia. His place of death is variously Rockingham
County, Virginia, or Pendleton County, Virginia. The latter is found in the
same genealogy that also reports Abraham born in Pendleton County, Virginia,
instead of Pendleton County, West Virginia. Abraham's place of marriage to
Maria Kittle is also reported as either Rowan County, West Virginia, or simply
Virginia. The latter two are due to the glossing over of historical fact.

The whole area now known as West Virginia was a part of Virginia until 1861,
when the western part of Virginia, non slave-holding, seceded from the
Confederate state of Virginia. West Virginia was admitted to the Union as a
new state in 1863. At the time of the Teters' arrival there, the area was new
territory added to the British North American domains in the 1750s and 1760s,
after wars with the French over this and other territory.

The area became part of Virginia Colony, and thereby part of the constituent
state (Commonwealth) of Virginia, after Virginia became one of the United
States, which was formed following the Revolutionary War. I have presented
alternatives, or have decided on the basis of the most consistent and complete
sources, and comparing places of birth, marriage and death between the
generations. Abraham moved his family west about 1800.

Genealogies tell us that his son Levi was born in Pendleton, Virginia, on 1
August 1799, and the next child, Isaac, was born in Cahokia, on the
Mississippi River in St Clair County, Illinois. This area was French
territory as recently as 1763, when the British the territory from the French.
The US in turn took the land in 1783.

Illinois Territory was proclaimed only on 1 March 1809, according to history
sources. A portion of this land became the State of Illinois on 3 December
1818. So the Teters moved to new US land in the Illinois territory before
there was an official US Territory of Illinois.

So for historical accuracy, drawing upon several family genealogies, four
children of Abraham and Maria Kittle were born in Pendleton County of the US
State (Commonwealth) of Virginia:
Susannah (no birth information, most sources lack this child)
Abigail 5 December 1794
Joshua 1 September 1796
Levi 1 August 1799

The remaining children were born in Illinois Territory of the US, the first
five in Illinois before the official Territory was proclaimed:
Isaac 16 April 1801
Christina 23 January 1803
Rebecca 16 January 1805
Priscilla 25 February 1807
Solomon 19 February 1809 (only 2 weeks before the accession of the State of
Illinois in to the Union on 1 March)
Abraham 11 January 1811
Phillip 26 March 1813
Mary 18 April 1815

The Teters settled in the area of Cahokia, sharing its name with one of the
Algonquian tribes who lived in the area when the Europeans came. The area had
been occupied for about 10000 years, at one time constituting "the largest
pre-Columbian (around AD 1300) community north of Mexico," according to the
Encyclopedia Britannica. Cahokia had in olden times been the religious center
of the Mississippian peoples.

Notes for Elizabeth TETER

One anonymous genealogy gives her full name as Melissa Elizabeth Teter. This
genealogy has little information and a different birth date, so the name may
refer to a different person, even though the genealogy gives this name for the
daughter of Isaac Teter and Susannah Greene.

Elizabeth Teter was first married to William J A Watkins (Wadkins). After his
death she married James Henry Tate, in about 1866. It appears that Henry,
although about 40 years old at that time, had not been married before. I have
found no record of a marriage or children before J H married Elizabeth Teter.
James Henry Tate and Elizabeth Teter Watkins they also had 4 children, whom I
show in this genealogy. They lived in Parker County, Texas.

Elizabeth and Henry are recorded with her Watkins children in the 1870 census
for Parker County, west of Ft Worth.

Notes for Isaac TETER

Evlyn Broumley found information about Susannah (Greene) Teter in the census
mortality records. In the 1850-1880 censuses, a record was taken of deaths
that had occurred in those years. Evlyn wrote about her findings in her
genealogy column in the Weatherford Democrat newspaper.

"My first find was in the 1860 Parker County mortality pages, stating that
Isaac Teter, age 60, born in Illinois, died of pneumonia in January 1860,
after being sick one week, was a married farmer who lived in Parker County.
By the births of his children, I knew his wife died about 1850; this took a
little more searching, but found her as Susan Leter, age 47, born in Kentucky,
died in February 1850 of lung fever after eight days in Mason County,
Illinois. Isaac married again and brought his family to Parker County by
1855.

In this census, Ada is reported as only 1 year old. But an exact birth date
from family sources says she was born 28 June 1877. That would mean she was 3
