Notes for Laura Margaret THOMAS

Donna Thomas Mondier reports that Laurie was named Laurie Margaret. From her
age in the 1860 census, she was born about 1854. She does not appear in the
1870 census with her widowed Mother Mary Ann, so must have been marreid by age
16 and in her own household in 1870.

Notes for Lewis N THOMAS

In 1870, Lewis is reported in the census only as L Thomas. His name was
provided to me by a descendant, Donna Thomas Mondier. Lewis was not reported
in the census of July 1860, yet was reported as 10 years old in the census of
July 1870.

Since he was not enumerated in the 1860 census, Lewis was not born until July
1860 at the earliest (census date being July 1). With the 1870 census being
in June, he could not have had his 10th birthday yet. July 1970 would have
been the earliest time he could have become 10 years old.

Lewis/Louis is head of the household, but unmarried in 1880, with his mother
Mary Ann living with him. There is also a niece named Annie Zerbst living
with them, who we learn from other sources is the daughter of Lewis' sister
Catherine. They are living next door to Louis' brother Peter and his wife
Lucy with their two children.

Note that Annie was born in Texas, as well as her mother, but her father was
born in Prussia. Marriage records for Brazos County, Texas, fill in details
of this situation. Donna found records of the marriage of Cathrine Thomas to
Charles Zerbst. This appears to be their daughter.

This Annie could not be a niece of Lewis, since none of his sisters were even
born until the family had been in Texas some years.

In 1900 we find that Lewis has moved to Bell County, Texas, where he and his
children are living in the town of Rogers. We see form this Lewis has been
married and widowed in the 20 years since the 18880 census, and has three
children in his household, as well as a Willie B Stewart, a niece who is
single. This surname of Stewart gives us another clue to follow to
connections for the marriage of Lewis' sisters.

Notes for Mary E THOMAS

Several genealogies report detailed information about Mary and her children.
They have an exact birth date but I have not found one that cites a source,
like the gravestone or Bible record.

Mary E. Thomas
Birth 30 Oct 1869 in North Cove, McDowell, North Carolina
Death 16 Feb 1924 in Madison County, North Carolina
Parents James "Jim" Carter Thomas 1845-1917
Martha M. Sellers 1845-1923
Marriage to William M. Edmonds 27 Oct 1884 Erwin, Unicoi County, Tennessee
-- Cooper, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/7403945/person/2004987742

The record of death reports her month of death and her reprrted age of birth.
The age given makes her born in 1872, while family sources say she was born 30
October 1869. (I have not seen any of these sources saying where they actually
got this date, so at this level it must be considered unverified.) Ages in
census indicate birth in 1870 or 1871.

North Carolina Death Collection, 1908-2004
Mary Edmonds
Age 52, Est Date of Birth 1872
Death Feb 1924 Madison County, North Carolina

The death certificate has this same general information on it. Her husband
William was the informant, so he was the one who reported her age as 52, or
her birth year as 72, or both. The birth date is given as just a year, but
the age is given as 52 years and 10 months. This would seem to indicate that
the physician had at least a month of birth, though that was not recorded
here.

Fifty-two years and 10 months from the date of death on 16 February 1924 would
NOT be 1872, but April 1871, possible March 1871, depending on the actual day.
This, of course, does not match either the month or the year of the Oct 1869
date reported in the genealogies.

All this indicates the different orientation to detail in that time and
culture Exactitude was not in focus, and often people did not now, care or
remember dates. Of course, some families kept better records than others. I
would tend to favor the official report on the birth certificate, but its lack
of precision and inconsistency does not engender much higher trust than the
undocumented genealogy dates.

The name of her mother reported by family genealogies is Martha M Sellers.
William Edmonds' mother was Catherine White. I wonder if there was a
misunderstanding between the doctor and William on this name? The father's
name here matches family reports of the name James (Jim) C Thomas.

The 1900 census has the same October birth month as the genealogy, but places
it a year later in 1870, clsoer to ages reported in the census and the deth
certifiacte.

Notes for Mary Elizabeth THOMAS

I got some clues on the origins of Mary Elizabeth Terry when I received an
email from a great niece of hers in September 2008. This message informed me
that M E's maiden name was Thomas. I knew her parents were both born in
Germany from census reports in 1900 and 1920. Thomas was an odd last name for
a Germany family. Perhaps the family originated from England or Ireland.

I finally found Mary Elizabeth in her widowed mother's home in 1870, listed
with only the initial E. Her mother M A (Mary Ann Kiefer) Thomas was reported
as born in Prussia, a dominant German state at the time. They are first
recorded in the 1860 census, which I found shortly after. Mary Elizabeth was
the third child born in Texas, in about 1855. The first child born in Texas
was Catherine, about 1852.

The 1860 census below gives us the children's names and approximate birth
dates. The second son Joseph was 10 years old in 1860, meaning he was born in
about 1850. From shipping information found by Donna Thomas Mondier, a
descendant of this Thomas line, we learn that Nic and Mary Ann sailed out of
Bremen, Germany, 19 September 1850 and landed in Galveston, Texas, in November
1850.

This would mean that Joseph was born between January and June 1850 (to be 10
before the July census date).

Notes for Nicholas THOMAS

Nicholas Thomas came to the US in 1850 from Prussia, the leading German state
at that time. (It was Prussia, which had absorbed all the German states
except Austria, against whom the British and their allies fought in World War
I.) A descendant, Donna Thomas Mondier, found the information on the Thomas
family's move to the US. Nicholas is listed in the passengers sailing from
Bremen to Galveston, Texas.

Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s
Primary Immigrant: Thomas, Nic, from Neufilzen; family of 4. The ship's name
was Estafette, Captain Heyen, departure of Sept 19, 1850 from Bremen to
Galveston arriving in Nov of 1850

More details about the family are found in the Notes for his daughter Mary

"I have come across information that lists Nicholas Thomas
(9/6/1813-10/31/1868) as being buried in the Schultze Cemetery in Brazos

the Carnegie Library in Bryan, TX. I am trying to research this cemetery

Notes for Peter THOMAS

The birth and death dates for Peter and Lucy Thomas are on the listing of the
Cottonwood Cemetery in Brazos County, where Peter and his wife Lucy were
buried.

"Lucy J. Thomas 9/5/1852 6/26/1918 [Lucy Jane? Hood, wo Peter Thomas]"
"Peter Thomas 5/16/1848 1/18/1900"
--
http://ftp.rootsweb.ancestry.com/pub/usgenweb/tx/brazos/cemetery/cotton.txt

Their infant son's name and details are also in that register. Frank lived
less than a year:
"Frank Almer Thomas 9/22/1892 8/25/1893 Son of Lucy and Peter"
--
http://ftp.rootsweb.ancestry.com/pub/usgenweb/tx/brazos/cemetery/cotton.txt

Peter is the oldest child of Nicolas Thomas and Mary Ann Kiefer, one of two
born in Prussia before the family emigrated to Texas in 1850. A census record
of his daughter Frances Elizabeth in 1920 clarifies that Peter was born in
Alsace-Lorraine, a German-speaking province that had been shifted back and
forth from the domains of the French Empire and the various German Empires.
Since WWI it has been a Province of France.

We find Peter and his parents recorded in the US census of 1860 in Brazos
County, Texas.

Peter's father Nicholas died before the 1870 census. Peter is one of the
children still in the household of his widowed mother Marry Ann.

1870 Federal Census, Brazos County, Texas, 16 June, PO Bryan, page 2, Hse/Fam

Thomas, Joseph H W M 8 Son Farm Hand TX Prussia AL

The birth places of Joseph's parents don't make sense. They should be the
same as for Ada. Both are the children of Lucy.

Living next door to Peter and his family is his brother Lewis N, a single head
of household, with their mother in the household, as well as 12-year-old Annie
Zerbst, daughter of Mary's Ann's daughter Cathrine Thomas Zerbst.
