Notes for Jessie May THOMPSON

Jessie May's birth was reported to the Indian Territory authorities. It was
important at that time to establish an individual's Native American identity.
This was a very political affair, decided by the US government, through the
Dawes Commission and other mechanisms, not by the Nations themselves.

An affidavit was issued by her mother Minnie Lee Green Thompson declaring her
birth and stating her citizenship. A problem occurred here, in that initially
they were registered in Choctaw Nation, where they living. When Minnie was
registered along with her mother, Fannie Colbert and the other children, they
were living in Choctaw Nation, though they were Chickasaws. They were
registered not as Chickasaw citizens living in Choctaw Nation, but as Choctaw
citizens. This was corrected by Fannie in later registrations after they had
moved to Chickasaw Nation.

In this affidavit it is notable that initially they were correctly listed as
citizens of Chickasaw Nation. Then "Chickasaw" was crossed through, and it
was rewritten above as Choctaw in several places where citizenship is stated.
Should we be surprised that errors of this type occur in papers required by
and handled by Federal government employees and offices?

There is a diuplicate memorial on Find a Grave, with what seems to be a
misspelling of Jessie's name, as Jessee M Stephens. Actually, this memorial
was established 2 years before the other, so I guess, technically, the other
one with the correct speling is the duplicate.

Notes for John Mercer THOMPSON

The following genealogy provides good information on John Mercer Thompson and
his wife Mary Jane Looney. I am uncertain about the place of marriage. There
may be an error here due to an entry confusion between the town of St Clair in
Franklin County, in eastern Missouri, while St Clair County, where they lived
and she died, is in western Missouri. I suspect they were married in St Clair
County, not Franklin County.

Gravestone of J W Thompson, New Johnsonville Cemetery, Byars, McClain,
Oklahoma
J W Thompson
Born Jun 4, 1866
Died Dec 13, 1907

Find a Grave and other sources refer to the Cemetery as New Johnsonville
Cemetery. The sign for the cemetery actually has the name as New
Johnstonville Cemetery.

Cindy Pannell comments on the three grave markers she found and photographed
in the cemetery.

"Far left tombstone of John William Thompson (husband of Minnie Lee Green
Thompson Jones). Middle tombstone of Francis Colbert East (mother of Minnie
Lee Green Thompson Jones). Far right presumed tombstone of 2nd husband Claude
Jones. The name and dates are hand scribed and very faint but at the time I
could make out the name Jones and maybe what looked like a "C". The date has
to be before 1935-36 as Minnie moved west to Calif around that time. This has
to be Claud Jones' marker."

Notes for Julia A THOMPSON

Julia's maiden name may be spelled Tompson. The maiden name was reported by
the McPherson family. The middle initial was discovered in the 1880 census.
There was a difference in the birth year of Julia, with the family reporting
1840, but the census giving her age as 32, which would yield a birth year of
about 1847 from a June 1880 census.

Notes for Letitia Chestnut THOMPSON

I have listed the wife of Floyd A Stewart as Letitia, because this is how she
is reported in most censuses I have found. This is the standard spelling of
this name. In 910, she is listed as Martine C Stewart, in 1920 as Letticia C
Stewart, and in 1930 as Letitia C Stewart.

Letitia's husband's WWI registration gives us her middle name.

The first two censuses seem to indicate that her birthday is between January
and April 1881. She is reported as 29 for an April 15 census and 38 for a
January 1 census. In 1930, the census date is 1 April (her household was
enumerated on 7 April), and her age is 49. This matches the pattern,
confirming a birth date after January, but sometime before the two April
censuses. Her exact birth date is reported in the SSDI below.

I found what appears to be our Letitia's Death record from the Social Security
administration. Note that here her name is spelled Letetia. This is similar
to the name in the 1930 census. In that census it appears the name was first
written as Litetia, the E filled in like an I, but with no dot above the I.
So the final reading looks more like Lititia.

Notes for Nancy Ann THOMPSON

"Robert Kyle Briscoe -- Robert was a doctor. He is my 3rd great grandpa.
His wife Nancy died young and was buried in Missouri in a cemetery by the
Arkansas line. He was so upset from losing her. He was a doctor in the civil
war. He later married Mary Ann Cox. They both are buried in the Orr Cemetery
in Orr, Oklahoma, a small town by Healdton, Oklahoma. I have pictures of
their grave site. I'm surprises that you found Isaac Briscoe's dad's name.
Me and others have searched and searched for it."
