Her maiden name is reported on her gravestone in Smith Mountain Cemetery, Dinuba, Tulare County, California. Photo available on Find a Grave. (See link below) The Toews lineage were from Russia, but ultimately from a Dutch origin. The 1901 Canadian census reporting Laura's father and grandparents says they were German-speaking, but the 1920 US census reports they were Dutch-speaking. They immigrated to the US through Manitoba Province of Canada, where Laura and her brother were born. Laura's mother was also born in Canada, according to the US census. Laura made a trip from Canada to the US in December 1918, when she was just 3 months old. Then the next year, her family immigrated to the US, moving to Dinuba, Tulare County, California, to join a cousin of her grandfather. In 1930 there are two records for Victor in Seattle, Washington. First he and his wife Gwendolyn (Gwyn here) or Gwendoline are listed in the city directory. U.S. City Directories, 1821-1989 Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1930, p 1699 Tomer Realty Co (Victor Tomer) 2415 W Spokane Tomer Victor (Gwyn) (Tomer Realty Co) h 8421 16th av SW In the 1930 census for Seattle, a record appears for Victor, Italian-born, and Gwendoline, with her son Edwin Gray. Note that in this record, Gwendoline is reported as born in England, as well as her parents. This appears to be Gwendolyn Hibbs who was previously married to bandleader Earl T Gray, which is supported by Victor's stepson here named Edwin Gray. But in the 1920 census for Earl and Gwendolyn, she was reported born in Washington, and her father and mother born in Kansas and Missouri, respectively. 1930 Federal Census, King County, Washington, 18 April, Seattle, District 11-212, page 21A, 8421 10th Ave SW, Hse #288, Fam #296 Tomer, Victor Head Owns Has Radio M W 35 Married at age 20 Italy Italy Italy Immigrated 1912 Real Estate Salesman [b abt 1910] Tomer, Gwendoline Wife F W 29 Married at age 16 England England England Immigrated 1910 [b abt 1901] Gray, Edwin Son M W 9 Single Oregon Hawaii England [b abt 1921] The marriage record for Victor and Gwyn did not turn up till after the above two 1930 records. Sources I have followed report Catherine's birthplace as Dieppe, Seine-Maritime, Haute-Normandie (Normandy), France. One or two report her birth in Rouen, also in Normandy, rather than Dieppe. Quebec, Vital and Church Records (Drouin Collection), 1621-1967 Julien du Mont [Dumont] son of Jacques and Marie Maubert [du Mont] Parish of Bernière, dioscese of Bayenne Spouse Catherine Topsan daughter of Charles and Marie Cimaceski [?] of the Parish of Jacques de Dieppe, Dioscese of Rouen Mariage (Marriage) solemnized by Jacques Coiselle of Nôtre Dame de Québec Charles Allaire of the Isle of Orleans Parish and Nicolas Rouffin of the Parish of the Guardian Angel, [unclear] of Beaupray [Beaupré] on 2 Nov 1667 at Nôtre Dame de Québec, Quebec (Quebec City), Québec, New France -- Nôtre-Dame Marriage Book for 1621-1679, courtesy of Ancestry.com
According to Brian Demoe (http://www.happyones.com/genealogy/dumont/index.html), Marie Madeleine Tourneroche was Julien's second wife. His first wife, Catherine Topsan, whom Julien married in Québec City, had 7 children with Julien, before she died in December 1693. Brian reports that Julien and Marie married on Ile d'Orléans, Quebec, where Julien's estate was, on 19 October 1694. They moved about 1702-4 to La Durantaye, where they finished out their years. Over the next 20 years, they had 10 children. Julien died 17 May 1715, but I do not have a date for Marie Madeleine's death.
