I am reproducing here the excellent documentation gathered by Mary Nell Burnett on William Tucker. Many salient details of William and Mary's life are presented here. Note that one of the witnesses of William Tucker's will was Miles Knowlton, who later married William's widow Mary. The will was made just one day before William's death. â¢Name: William TUCKER â¢Sex: M â¢Change Date: 17 NOV 2009 â¢Birth: BET 1803 AND 1810 in Younger Creek, Hardin County, Kentucky â¢Death: 17 JUL 1834 in Mooney Township, Phillips County, Arkansas â¢Residence: 15 OCT 1827 Mooney Township, Phillips County, Arkansas â¢Census: BET 01 JUN 1830 AND 22 SEP 1830 Mooney Township, Phillips County, Arkansas â¢Will: 16 JUL 1834 Mooney Township, Phillips County, Arkansas â¢Note: His will was filed with the county clerk two weeks after his death. â¢Event: Journal Conclusion 29 MAR 1835 Mooney Township, Phillips County, Arkansas â¢Note: Seven months after Williams death, Mary filed a preemption claim with the goverment in order to keep the land that he had first settled on in 1822. She filed the claim on behalf of her minor children, Narcissa, Harden, Mississippi, Augusta and Nelson Tucker, heirs of her late husband, William Tucker. â¢Event: Newspaper Article 16 MAR 1830 Arkansas â¢Note: Arkansas Gazette, March 16, 1830 No. 12 - Whole No. 532 JUSTICES OF THE PEACE The following is an official list of the JUSTICES OF THE PEACE elected by joint vote of the General Assembly of the Territory of Arkansas, on the 7th day of November 1829. PHILLIPS COUNTY, Mooney township, Austin Kendrick, sen., Jehiel Ashley, William Tucker, Dodson Tharp, Thomas Bland, William Ritchey. â¢Event: Journal Intro BEF 1803 â¢Note: William Tucker, A Forgotten Settler of Phillips County, Arkansas There are many men and women whose names are recorded in the pages of Arkansas's history. This honor having been granted to them in recognition for their contributions or achievements. They come from all walks of life, explorers, trailblazers, pioneers, inventors, writers, actors, generals and presidents. When we hear their names mentioned, we know who they were and what they did to make their mark on history. Then, there are those whose names have never been known to us, they have been come lost in the dusty pages of time. They came to Arkansas for many different reasons, but most came for the chance of a new life and the most prized commodity of all, a chance to own their own land. They were a hardworking group of people who came from all over and from all walks of life. They cleared the land, planted their crops, and raised their families. Those who lived on the Arkansas and Mississippi Rivers tried to tame these great rivers, the fought the elements and a Civil War. Through it all they persevered. They built communities and became part of them. The communities became towns, some prospered some did not. Some of these men and women went on to have their names remembered, some did not. William Tucker was such a man. William Tucker was born and raised in the Younger Creek area of Hardin County, Kentucky. The exact date of his birth is unknown, but it is believed he was born about 1805. He was the fifth child born to Nathan and Permelia ( Cheney ) Tucker. His parents had emigrated to Hardin County, Kentucky from Harrison County, Virginia about 1800. Nathan Tucker, Sr., is found on the tax rolls of Hardin County every year from 1801 until 1833 when his names disappears from the rolls. Nathan and Permilia were the parents of 6 known children, William was the youngest of their 3 sons. Not much is known of his early years. Both of his brother names appear on the Hardin County tax rolls after they reach the age of 21, William's name does not. The only time his name appears in any of the records of Hardin County is when he marries in 1825. â¢Event: Tax List Hardin County, Kentucky â¢Event: Journal Intro 1823 Mississippi Township, Arkansas County, Arkansas â¢Note: He appeared on the Sherriff's census in 1823, in Mississippi Township, Arkansas County, Arkansas. â¢Event: Journal Intro DEC 1822 Territory of Arkansas â¢Note: There are other records to prove that William had moved to Arkansas about 1822. William's name appears in a court suit in Arkansas for "Trespassing on Public Lands". The suit was dismissed in May 1823. Trespassing was common practice. â¢Residence: 29 NOV 1829 Phillips County, Arkansas â¢Residence: 05 NOV 1831 Phillips County, Arkansas â¢Residence: 09 AUG 1833 Phillips County, Arkansas â¢Residence: 11 DEC 1833 Phillips County, Arkansas â¢Event: Journal Intro 02 JUN 1827 Phillips County, Arkansas â¢Note: This is known from a land deed. This is the first time that William's name appears in the Phillips County deed books. The deed is a quit claim deed from Jared Nelson. No description of the land is given. It reads: "Know all men by these present, that I Jared Nelson of the Territory of Arkansas and County of Phillips for and in consideration of the sum of Four hundred dollars, to me in hand paid the receipt where of I do hereby acknowledge, have remised, released and forever quit claim unto the Sd William Tucker his heirs and asigns forever all the right, title, interest property property Estate and demand which I the said Jared Nelson have in and to or ever had to a certain improvement whereon Wm Tucker now lives, to have and to hold the Sd premise, with all the premises and appurtenances unto him the Sd William Tucker his heirs and asigns forever so that neither I the Sd Jared Nelson or any other person or persons in my name or behalf shall or will hereafter claim or demand any right title to the premises aforesaid or any part thereof, but they and every of them shall by these premises be excluded and forever barred in witness whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal this 2nd day of June 1827." Test. Jared Nelson Josiah Twedell Territory of Arkansas County of Phillips ~~~~~ I George W. Ferebee Clerk of the Circuit Court of Said County do Certify that the foregoing instrument of writing is a true copy from the original filed in my office for record on the 18th day of February A.D. 1830, and recorded the same day. Geo. W. Ferebee Clerk & Ex~Official Recorder. A search of the deed records revealed no other entry for a Jared Nelson and his name does not appear on the 1830 census for Phillip's County. If there was a relationship between the two men, this deed does not give any clue as to what it may have been. It's possible that the connection is the man who was the wittiness for the deed, Josiah Twedell. He was a cousin to William's wife, Mary. Mary's father Benjamin Twedell had a sister Sarah, who married a James Nelson in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. â¢Event: Journal Intro 07 AUG 1820 Little York Township, Hardin County, Kentucky â¢Note: William was most likely living in his fathers household in the 1820 census. There were two males listed in the age 10 to 16 column and two males listed in the 16 to 21 column. If he was born between 1803 and 1810 this would place him in the 10 to 16 age column. William's name is never listed on any of the Hardin County tax rolls, the names of his brothers, Nathan Tucker, Jr. and Thomas Tucker do appear on the rolls as soon as they turn twenty-one.The only explanation for the absence of his name on the tax rolls is that he must left home before he turned of age to be taxed. â¢Event: Journal Intro 1822 Phillips County, Territory of Arkansas â¢Note: Sometime between 1820 and 1822 William has moved to Arkansas. This information comes from his wife, Mary Tucker. Shortly after William's death in 1834, his widow Mary files a pre-emption claim with the federal government. In it she states; "The petitioner sets forth in her petition, and proves the facts to be true by several citizens, that, in the year 1822, her husband, William Tucker, settled on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, in the county of Phillips, and Territory of Arkansas. He continue to reside there on, and made considerable improvements, until his death, the 16th of July, 1834, that when her husband first settled on said land, it was not surveyed, and when the country was surveyed, the improvement of aforesaid was on the 16th section of the township. The petitioner prays that she may be permitted to enter the land she resides on as a pre-emption right under the different acts of Congress, securing to the settlers on public lands a preference of entering their improvements and etc. The petition refers to several cases were Congress has extended the like privileges to other citizens. The committee fully acknowledges the principal, that whosoever so what should be permitted to reap, but they deny the principal, that if Congress has once errred, that is right to continue in error. The committee in examining into the grants of the United States, of the sixteenth section in each township of the public lands, have come to the following conclusion; That all said grants of the sixteenth section are given to the township for common schools for the instruction of children forever. Your Committee believe there is a vested right in the township for a particular specified purpose, and that neither Congress, the State or Territory in which the land lies, nor the citizens of the township, can appropriate said sixteenth section to any other purpose than that specified in the grant. Your committee believed that it would be but a Justice to the petitioner and her children to permit her to enter a quarter section of other land in lieu of the land she resides on, and therefore report a bill." â¢Event: Journal Intro BET 1827 AND 1853 Phillips County, Arkansas â¢Event: Journal Intro 16 JUL 1834 Mooney Township, Phillips County, Arkansas â¢Note: "On this sixteenth day of July A. D. 1834 William Tucker of the County of Phillips, in the Territory of Arkansas being in A low State of health, And believing that he was about to depart this life And being of Sound Mind, made and declared, the following as his last Will and Testament (to wit) He gave and bequeathed to his wife Mary Tucker, All his estate both personal and real during her Widowhood. And in the event of her again marrying, he gave and bequeathed to her One third part, of his said estate, And the services of Negro Man Charles, during her natural life. He further stated that it was his wish, that his Sons, should be well educated And that his wife Mary Should be Sole Executrix of this his last will and Testament." The above will was made in the last sickness of William Tucker at his residence in the County of Phillips, And it was made the day before the death, of the Said William Tucker, And at the time of making it, he called upon Miles Knowlton and John W. The few facts that are known about his life come from the documents that were created during his lifetime and afterwards. Census, tax, land and court records help to piece together the details of his life. The exact date of his birth is not known, but it is almost certain that he was born in the area of Hardin County, Kentucky known as "Younger Creek". Council Avenue Blanchard, Oklahoma 73010 Coy D Tugman December 11, 1943 - March 22, 2019 Coy D Tugman, age 75, went to be with the Lord on March 22, 2019. He was surrounded by his family, who loved him dearly. Coy was born on December 11, 1943, in Lindsay, Oklahoma, to Dave and Mary (Hanley) Tugman. He was the second of two boys - Don, being the oldest - and during their time in Lindsay, the Tugman boys made their mark. They were hard workers, good hunters, rambunctious playmates, fun pranksters, loyal friends, and proud members of their immediate and extended families. Coy graduated from Lindsay High School in 1961, from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma in 1966, from the University of Oklahoma in 1973 with a Master of Arts in Education, along with postgraduate certification in public school administration. He was a lifelong professional educator who devoted himself to the betterment of others by empowering them with the life-changing skills that a good education provides. He enjoyed a distinguished career as a school administrator that won him many awards and the respect of his colleagues. His teaching career was just one of many ways that Coy sought to live a life of service. From being the Principal of local schools to being the founder and Chief of a volunteer fire department, an active member of the Lionâs Club, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and an influential leader in the church, Coy tirelessly worked to improve the communities of which he was part. Coy met the love of his life, Avis Ann Russell, on the campus of ECU, where they were fellow students. They were married on May 30, 1963 and remained married for nearly 56 years. Together, they were a dynamic duo in education, in service, and in faith. They quietly provided for students in need, families in need, and fellow Christians in need. They supported impoverished children in Haiti, supported Christian missionaries, and supported Bible-sharing ministries like Eastern European Missions. They were champions of the local church, and each one has lived a life that has pointed many people to Jesus. Coyâs legacy can be measured by the countless number of students, teachers, community members, friends, and Christian brothers and sisters whose lives he impacted in some way. But his pride and joy were his children and grandchildren, who all seek to follow the Christ-like example he set for them. Coy is survived by his cherished wife, Ann, daughter Kami and Kerry Wright, son Rusty and Mitzi Tugman, granddaughter Kelsie and Preston Gibbs, grandson Logan and (the future) Macy Wright, grandson Nolan Wright, and granddaughter Hope Tugman, and brother Don and Gaynell Tugman. Also many beloved nieces and nephews, ornery cousins, two sisters-in-law (in addition to Gaynell), Martha Russell and Gayle Johns, and two brothers-in-law, Lynn Russell and Bobby Johns, who were collaborators on many adventures. He is preceded in death by his parents and numerous family members, including sister-in-law and brother-in-law Beth and Gary Murdock and grandson Cooper Hammer Tugman. His family hopes that others will be encouraged by Coyâs example to live out the words of 1 Peter 4:10 which says, âEach of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of Godâs grace in its various forms.â Memorial contributions can be made to Haitian Childrenâs Home care of Blanchard Church of Christ and/or Eastern European Mission (eem.org). A memorial service to honor Coyâs life will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at the Blanchard Church of Christ. A private interment will be held in Greenhill Cemetery in Lindsay, prior to the service. Arrangements are under the direction of Eisenhour Funeral Home of Blanchard. The day also varies, with the draft registration saying 21 February, while the SSDI says 22 February. It looks like the correct year is 1896, because this matches the 1900 census, when he was reported to be 4 years old. They surely would know if he was 4 or 6. In 1920 (census date 1 January), his age was 22, which would make him born in 1897! As an adult Fred probably remembered the year incorrectly. Fred could not write (not his Mark in signing the draft card). He might have been able to read, and the 1910 census reports him at 14 years old as able to both read and write, and the 1920 census likewise just 2 years after he had signed his draft card with only a mark. Even though he gives the name of his cousin as the nearest relative, genealogies report that Fred was married in 1916. Most men put their wives as nearest relative. According to the family, J D was always called by only his initials. The family sources say Jack was not a real name, and they do not know why he was called Jack. But every public record or Directory listing reports him as Jack D Tugman. Only two early exceptions to this occur, when he was listed as J D in the 1920 and 1930 censuses. All other records have him as Jack D, including his California death record, his WWII registration and his marriage records. I have not seen his birth certificate. The family name is spelled Tugman in all sources except the 1920 census and a 1952 Bakersfield City Directory, where it is spelled Tugmon. Since they are in the 1952 directory, along with his father, and the occupation as driver matches, this is probably the same couple. There are other branches of the family that also spell the name as Tugman, including another J D Tugman of Bend, Oregon. He was there in early 1962, when he married Bessie Irene Gann. It is not clear if Mary died or they divorced. I have not found a divorce or death record in either Texas or California. We assume Mary died about 1959. Note that no wife's name is given here. In this same directory, J D's third wife appears as Flora Davis Maxwell, with no husband, but no designation of her as a widow, which we would expect. This may indicate they were divorced. Jeff Maxwell did not die until 1965, the year before Addie Flora (Flo) married J D. No entry appears for her first husband Jeff Maxwell, but Jeff's brother Clarence A Maxwell is in the directory. Two listings are found for the marriage of J D to Irene Devault, giving both her maiden name and her first married name of Gann. John H Tugman was born in Missouri to two immigrants from Ireland, Thomas Tugmon or Tugman and his wife Margrett (Margaret). In 1870, John was 10 years old, living with his family in Cass County, Missouri. Both he and his father are working on the railroad. The family nmae is spelled Tugman in this census. 1870 Federal Census, Cass County, Missouri, 11 August, Dolan, P O Wadesburg, page 1 (540), Hse/Fam #5, In household of father: Tugman, Thos. She is reported in the 1900 census, where we find John's parents living in Montague County, Texas. At some time before 1875 (when John's sister Magie [Maggie] was born), they moved to Texas. In 1880 John is reported boarding with other people working for the railroad in Texas. The 1880 census reports him living in a boarding house in Palo Pinto County, Texas (two counties west of Ft Worth). Ella was a registered Choctaw. ------------------ Thomas Tugman's Parents I am a direct decendant from one Thomas E Tugman born about 1890. He married a Della (do not know maiden name). He had three children Evelynn Tugman, Thomas Tugman, and My Mother Mary Tugman. My great grand father was a Tugman, all I know. Only hint I have is apparently he married a Choctaw woman. She was my grandfather's mother. He told a story that one day when he was very young a man came rideing in and tried to rape my great grandmother. She killed him. Great grandfather took the fall for the murder, because he felt that during this time they would have killed his wife, even if she did kill him defending herself from his advances. I know that they are the Oklahoma line of Tugmans. My mother can remember going to Oklahoma to visit his family as a kid but she does not recall any names. She also can remember my grandfather telling stories of visiting his mothers side of the family on the Reservation. I asume the Oklahoma Chacktaw reservation. But not certain. Grandfather was a halfbreed that looked white and he did not realy talk about the Indian side, because of the trouble he had seen it bring on people. -- "mandayven," 28 May 2009, on a discussion board, through the research of Joyce Kelso, posted on Ancestry 28 August 2013, accessed 28 March 2019 ------------------ On 1 March 1900, a news story reported that Jack Tugman had gone missing, and foul play was suspected. ------------------ Jack Tugman Missing Caddo [Choctaw Nation], Indian Territory (Bryan County, Oklahoma) Considerable excitement and comment has been caused in our town this week in the mysterious disappearance of Jack Tugman, who lives five miles out of town. He has not been seen since last Friday. Some think he has lost his mind and wandered away, but most likely he has either killed himself or been murdered. His wife and her brother were arrested and taken to Durant Monday charged with his murder, but enough evidence to hold them was lacking in the trial before Commissioner Ralls, so they were turned loose. -- Caddo Herald, from Caddo, Indian Territory, but carrieed in a section named "Territory News" in the Muskogee Phoenix, Muskogee, Indian Territory, 1 March 1900, http://www.newspapers.com/newspage/5773097/ (requires subscription); courtesy of the research of Dannet Bock-Barnes, posted to Ancestry 12 March 2014, accessed 28 March 2019 ------------------ We have not found news of the resolution of this matter, but Jack was OK, since in June that year he was reportred in the census with Ellas and his family, in the household of his father. My father was Tom, the second son of Jack and Ella. He came to Wyoming in 1910 and remained here until his death. I met Fred and Della as a young teen on a trip to California with my parents. They were at Zane's house. I don't know if they lived there or were visiting. My father was 6' 2" tall and I was shocked at how small his brother Fred was. My father told me he was about the size of his father. My mother's name was Della the same as Fred's wife. I was a late life child, my parents were more the age of most people's Grandparents. I live in Wheatland, Wyoming, were I was born and where my parents are buried. Also buried here is my sister and brother, both of which were much older then me. My brother died at 15 years of age before I was born. I know quite a bit of history on the family and will gladly share what I know for sure and what I certain is fact and any rumors. There are many rumors. I can tell you that I highly doubt that Rachel Tugman and William Frost are related as Thomas Tugmon and Margaret Manning, Jack's parents, were both from Ireland and immiagrated about 1850. By the way, Jack was the common nickname for John and part of the family spell the name TUGMAN and part TUGMON. My father spelled his name Tugmon as did his brother George. The two different spellings are confused in some of the other offspring of Ella and Jack. Their children's names were Frankl[in], Thomas, George, Bill, and Renie [Lorena]. They had other children that died in childhood but I can't find there names. I went with my Father to Oklahoma a couple of times and on one visit we visited his sister's grave. She had died as a child and my father years lated bought her a headstone and he wanted to see it. I think we were in Caddo but I'm not sure and I haven't had time to verify her name or grave location as yet. My father's father, Jack, is buried in Stringtown. I visited his grave with my father once. We were visiting his neice Jessie Snow at the time. Jessie was his sister Rennie's daughter. Rennie died a few years back and I can send you more about her if you like. Ella Bohannon was Choctau Indian. My father didn't know where she was buried or exactly how she died. There is rumor she died in Arkansas with hydophobia. But I am beginning to not believe it because there seems to be no record of any such happening and that would have made the papers in the town and county and possibly even the state. -- Mary McCartney, 15 September 2002, on a discussion board, through the research of Joyce Kelso, originally posted on Ancestry 28 August 2013, accessed 28 March 2019 ------------------ In the list of children in the note above, the child listed as Bill does not match any child found inrecords.
