The Dumond-McSwain family did not know the name of George Miller's first wife. She was a widow with a daughter named Anna Belle. The family did not know Anna Belle's original surname. George adopted Anna Belle, the story goes, and when her mother died, George married Mary Kinard Dumond, a widow. George died in 1925, and Mary adopted Anna Belle. Anna Belle is reported as 16 years old in the household of widow Emma Miller in 1930.
