In the 1850 census, the first US census to give the names of all family members, Nancy Harkins is already a widow. I have not discovered her husband's name or her maiden name. 1850 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 13 November, page 32 (scan p 263), Hse/Fam #1588 Nancy Harkins 54 [born abt 1796] SC Tilman R Harkins 24 M Laborer SC Asberry B 21 M Laborer SC Living next door to her is what appears to be her older son, James Harkins, age 31, with his 22-year-old wife Sarah M. They have three children, Margaret 4, Nancy S 2 and John G F P, 1 month old at census time in November. In 1860, Nancy is living in the household of her married son Asberry, in Towns County, Georgia. 1860 Federal Census, Towns County, Georgia, 15 July, PO Mountain Scene, page 24 (scan p 138), Hse/Fam #166 Asbery Harkins 21 M Farmer $200 Personal Estate b NC Nancy Harkins 25 F b SC Mary Harkins 4 F b GA George Harkins 2 M b GA Nancy Harkins 65 F Widow b SC In 1879, Nancy is enumerated in the census for Gilmer County, Georgia. But as so often is lamentably the case, no documentation or explanation is given. the place of death reported here is Gwinnett County, Georgia (northern Atlanta area). The date of death for Nancy is just the year 1870. Since we know she appeared in the census of 1870 in June, we can say she passed away in the last half of 1870, lacking any further documentation to the contrary. One genealogy says she died in Fulton County, Georgia (the country where Atlanta is). The discrepancy with the above may be due to her residence in Gwinnett County, but death in a hospital in Atlanta. Ambrose's wife is reported in 1880 as E McSwain, and in 1900 and Vinie E McSwain. Like so many others in this and related family lines, the name Vinie probably stood for Lavinia. It is more commonly spelled Viney or Viny. 1880 Federal Census, Cleveland County, North Carolina, 3 June, Township 7, Sandy Run, District 71, page 5 (Scan 571A), Hse #46, Fam #48 Ambrose McSwain W M 23 Husband Farmer NC NC NC [b abt 1857] E McSwain W F 23 Wife Keeping House Cannot write NC NC NC [b abt 1857] 1900 Federal Census, Cleveland County, North Carolina, 12 June, Sandy Run, Township 7, District 57, page 8B, Hse #139, Fam #142 McSwain, Ambros Head W M Dec 1856 43 Married 18 years NC NC NC Farmer Owns McSwain, Vinie E Wife W F Aug 1856 43 Married 18 years 11 children/5 living NC NC NC
