Notes for Dovina Tabitha WALKER

There is a discrepancy between sources on the place of birth. One reports
Newton, Catawba County, North Carolina. The second source reports only a
county name, Randolph County.

The latter report, by Jacque Watkins, is dated 5 Dec 2005, which may indicate
that she had found information that corrected the earlier report by the Terry
Family History website. Newton, however, is the County Seat of Catawba
County. So if Newton is the correct town, then it appears Catawba is the
correct county. For details of the family, in censuses and other sources, see
Notes for Joseph Lewis Terry.

Few sources have information about Dovina. On her son William Walker Terry's
death certificate, the name of his mother is reported as Tabitha. This may be
her middle or first name. But two genealogies have her name as Dovina
Virginia or Virginia Dovina Walker. I have not seen any documentation of the
name Virginia in records.

In the 1870 census Dovina is listed as Donna. There is another family group
in the household with the surname of Head, all born in Georgia. The strange
famliy name for all the entries after Donna (Dovinah) match their children in
other censuses plus the two younger ones, William (Walker) and Lula, who is
imissing from several lists and genealogies. But the ages and birth places
match Joseph and Dovey.

I cannot explain this strange enumerator error of entering the surname Head
for the natural chidlren of Dovina and Joe. I am entering the last name of
the children as Terry. There is an additional child after WIlliam Walker
Terry, born in 1860 after the census. The youngest child in this household is
Lula, age 4.

Joseph here is identified as a Baptist Preacher, which matches other censuses.

In the 1880 census Joseph and Dovina are listed in Milam County, along with
their daughter Martha Missouri. They are in the same household as Joseph's
son Thomas Louis. Even though they are listed with the same family number, in
terms of relationships, they are reported as a separate family. Thomas is the
Head of the household, but instead of being listed as father, Joseph is listed
with no relationship given. Dovina is listed as Wife, based on her
relationship to Joseph, not her son the head of the household. Likewise,
Martha M is listed as daughter, her relationship to Joseph, rather than as
sister of Thomas, the head of the household.

Her gravestone spells her name as Dovinah. This is the only place I ahve seen
that spelling. I notice, however, that her daughter's name is spelled in the
way we see it in family and other records, Dovina. I expect it was just
misspelled on the gravestone. Also in many names in that era we find a
stylistic variation of names ending in a or ah.

In 1920, Jim is in his own household, unmarried but hosting his sister Pearl
and her children. Pearl Martin is reported as married, but her husband James
is not in the home. They did divorce at some time before 1925 when James
married again in Oklahoma. They might have been already divorced at census
time, or separated before the divorce.

Jim and Pearl's father and his young wife Verda (Berdie) are living next door.

Two children are missing form this list that are reported in censuses with
this famliy. Daughter Pearl and son Charles M were reproted in the 1900
census. Charles is reported there as born in Colorado. Also reproted born in
Colorado was James and Calvin, the next two chidlren. In some later sources,
Pearl, born before Izella, is also reported born in Colorado, but in the 1900
census, she and Izella, and the other chdilren, wre all reported born in
Texas.

James Walker is reported in the 1920 census in Weatherford, Texas, with his
young wife Berdie and two chidlren. Other sources give us her name as Verdie.
His son Jim and daughter Pearl are living next door. James' wife Berdie is 4
years younger than his daughter Pearl. Note that Pearl is not listed in the
birth list above. On Pearl's death certificate she was reported as Pearl
Maude Walker, born on 25 December 1886 in Custer County, Colorado.

In 1920 Jim is still single, but Pearl is reported as married, even though her
husband James Martin is not in this household.

Pearl Martin is reported as married, but her husband James is not in the home.
They did divorce at some time before 1925 when James married again in
Oklahoma. They might have been already divorced at census time, or separated
before the divorce.

A few genealogies report that Connie's last name was Walker. I have found no
documentation on her maiden name. All other genealogies I find lack any
maiden name for her. An example follows.

There is some important secondary evidence. Connie's son Joseph Lewis Terry
named onof his sons William Walker Terry. The mother's maiden name is a
common naming pattern to preserve a female line in a lineage. One of William
Walker Terry's grandsons was also named the same.

"My great grandfather was William Walker Terry, I’m named after him.
William Terry moved with the Wells family from Texas to Douglas AZ. You can
find information regarding his side of the family at Wellsgazette.com. There
is a family grave yard outside of Douglas. William Terry Sr [is] buried

We now have Ruby Martin, James Alfred Charles Martin’s daughter from a
marriage we knew nothing about. He was married to Pearl Walker Parsons
Martin. I have added documentation to my tree. Linda Martin Bussell went to
court house and got marriage info which is included in tree.

Pearl had a sister Jimmie Sue Walker married to a Cleo Vernon Yeary which I
have added to the tree and researched with the hope it may produce a tie to
Nancy Elizabeth Jackson and Jim Yeary’s daddy. After inputting and
researching back 4 generations I have found nothing that may help us find the
Yeary tied to Nancy Elizabeth Jackson.

Their daughter Ruby was born in April 1916. But by 1920 they were separated,
perhaps already divorced. No divorce record has been found, and in 1920,
Pearl was still reported as Married. But she is living with her single
brother Jim, next door to her parents, right there in Weatherford, and James
is not in that household.

Pearl is also reported born in Colorado in the above census. All the other
children of James and Sarah Jane Brown were reported born in Parker County,
Texas. Pearl's death certificate reports her place of birth as Custer County,
Colorado. The informant for the certificate was her brother JM.

Pearl's stepmother Verda Smith Walker had a Bible with the list of birth dates
of James and Sarah Jane's children. Note that Pearl's name is not included in
the following list. But her age in the 1920 census is a good match for the
birth date in late 1888 of the daughter named Izella. However, Pearl's birth
date on her death certificate is 25 Dec 1886, and on her FAG memorial her name
is Pearl Maude Martin. It is not clear why her name is not in the Bible birth
list. Also missing from the list is Charles M, reported in 1900 as 9 years
old and born in Colorado.

On Pearl's death certificate she is named Pearl M Martin. Her burial memorial
on Find a Grave has her name as Pearl Maude Walker Martin. The birth date on
her grave matches the report by her brother Jim on her death certificate.
Note that the informant on her death certificate reports that Pearl's birth
place was Colorado, as did the 1920 census. However, in 1900, she and the
next child, Izella were reported born in Texas, while the next three children
after Izella were reported born in Colorado.

This later report that Pearl was also born in Colorado seems likely a case of
faulty memory by other family members. This likelihood is strongly supported
by the fact that Izella, born 2 years after Pearl, and 2 years before Charles,
was reported born in Texas. It does not seem likely they were in Colorado for
Pearl's birth, back to Texas for Izella's birth, then back to Colorado for the
birth of the next three children, born over a period of about 5 years.

It is not clear whether the informant on Pearl's death certificate was her
brother or her father, who have the same initials, and both of whom were still
alive when Pearl died.
