Notes for Hervey WALTER

Hervey Walter's son became the fist Butler of Ireland.

Theobald Walter born before 1156 was created the first "Butler of Ireland"
(about 1185) on behalf of the Norman King of England. "De Botiler" or "De
Botiller" are spellings of the word that became modern English "butler."

Theobald Walter was also known as the Baron of Arklow, though there might not
have been an official barony of Arklow established at that time.

Encyclopaedia Britannica gives us this sumamry of Arklow:

===========
Arklow

"Irish AN TINBHEAR MÓR, port, seaside resort and urban district on the Irish
Sea coast, in County Wicklow, southeast Ireland. In 431 St. Palladius, the
Christian missionary, landed at the present site of Arklow. The Vikings had a
settlement there, and the town was granted by John of England in 1189 to
Theobald Fitz-Walter, Lord Butler of Ireland. It was an English stronghold
during the late medieval period, and there are remains of a 13th-century
Dominican friary and fragments of the Butler castle. Small boats, pottery, and
fertilizers are manufactured there."

Notes for Mollie B WALTON

"I am the g-greatdaughter of Mollie Terry. She was married to my g-grandfather
Stephen Gaddy before she married Duncan. ... She appears on the 1910 census
with a grandson 1 1/2 years old named something Roscoe. Mollie had a son with
Stephen named George Roscoe. None of the 5 children show up with her on the
1910 census and I am so curious to know what happened to Stephen. Her
youngest child would have been 5 years old when she married Duncan. ... I am
the granddaughter of Reka Nana Gaddy. She shows up on the 1900 census with
Stephen and Mollie as Reiker."
-- "dferg1200," Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 03 April 2015

"I would assume that Mollie and Steve married in IT since the older children
were born there. Bessie and Jessie were twins and I think Jessie must have
died in infancy. Bessie was blind and ended up in a home for unwed mother's
in CA. I have had contact with her grandson who was adopted from the home.
He is an Air Force flight surgeon. He seems to think that Steve [Jr] ended up
in CA, but I have found no trace of him after he was mentioned in the 1910
letter written by Duncan."
-- "dferg1200," Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 09 September 2016

The 1900 census has the family name as Gaddis. The oldest child is Ethel,
reported born in June 1892. Both Elmer and Reiker (Reka) were reported as
born in 1896, but in different months! The entry for Reka first had age 2,
then it was changed to age 4. Her year was likely 1898. Years of birth are
often wrong in the 1900 census. Reka's birth date is reported in her Social
Security records as 15 March 1898.

-- "dferg1200," Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 08 September 2016

It seems more likely that the 1900 census, just a couple of years after Reka
was born, would be more correct in rerporting that Reka was born in Indian
Territory before the family moved to Polk County, Arklansas. The twins were
born in Polk county in about May 1900.

A marriage record in Choctaw Nation reports the marriage of Mrs Mollie Gaddy
to D L Terry. The Terry Family History has three maririages for Duncan
Lafayette Terry. Mollie was the third wife after Duncan had been widowed
twice.

Notes for Sarah Jane WALTON

The 1850 census reports that Sarah's age was 15. She is married to James
Runnels Briscoe and has a 10-month-old son Thomas. Her age of 15 would make
here born in about 1835.

But a genealogy reports her exact birth date as 2 Nov 1830, meaning she should
have been 20 years old in 1850. The same genealogy reports that she and James
married in August 1834, when she was only 13 years old.

Note that James' wife in 1850 was reported as Martha, but in all later

-- Miller, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/13733560/person/457076126

The Miller birth date for James is the same as Bethia's, which appears to be
an entry error in that genealogy. In 1860, James is reported as age 35, or
born about 1825. Age 26 in 1850 matches that earlier date. The memorial for
James' burial in Charlottesville, Virginia, reports this birth date of 1 May
1931, but provides no photo of a gravestone. The Miller genealogy is further
discredited by reporting James died in Heard County, Georgia.

Confederate records indicate he was a resident of Heard County when he
enlisted in the CSA army on 30 July 1861. This may actually be the place of
enlistment rather than the place of residence.

His FAG memorial reports he died in a Charlottesville, Virginia hospital of
the measles 11 September 1861. In the 1870 census, Bethia is the head of the
family. It is unclear when they moved to Texas. It was after the birth of W
N (1860), who matches Woodrow in the 1870 census.

We can say Bethia and the children moved after Jim's death in September 1861.
They must have moved with other families. Cass County (called Davis County in
1870) is on the border with Louisiana, not far south of Texarkana.

Julia's name in the actual entry is Juliar. The enumerator has written the
dialectic local pronunciation, which commonly adds an ending R to names ending
in a vowel (common examples are Ader for Ada & Eller for Ella). The wife in
the house just above them is, in fact, also reported as Juliar. This is Julia
Elizabeth Ward, who later married John Cullen Jenkins, my grandfather's
brother. The Ancestry sloppy transcription has Julian, a male name,

Until May 2016, when the 1860 census was discovered, the first census record I
had for Julia Ward Jenkins was 1870, in the Cussetta area of Cass County,
renamed for a period as Davis County, Texas. She is 12 years old here, in
her widowed mother's household.

There is also a problem with the age of this Jane E, being 48, consistent with
early censuses. But in 1900 she is reported as 43 and only 58 in 1930 (when
we would expect her to be 68)! But another error in this report seems to
confirm that this Jane E is Stewart's mother Julia. Jane E's birth state is
reported as Alabama, the same as the birthplace of Stewart's mother. These
are consistent, although previously Julia E Ward is reported as having been
born in Georgia. Georgia is also the birth place reported on her death
certificate.

In 1930 she is living with her son Ebb.

Notes for Mary WARD

Virginia, Compiled Marriages, 1740-1850
Richard Gregory
Spouse Name Mary [Mrs] Broadnax
Marriage Date 16 Sep 1777
Sussex County, Virginia

"Mary Ward, born 1749, died 1787, who married first, William Broadnax, and 2,
Richard Gregory ... Martha Ward Gregory, daughter of Richard Gregory, married
Gen John Pegram, and was ancestor of many well-known Virginians."
-- "The Ward Family," Genealogies of Kentucky Families from The Register of
the Kentucky Historical Society, Vol. II, p 599

---------------------------------
GREGORY FAMILY of KING WILLIAM COUNTY VIRGINIA

Richard Gregory (1758-1844), son of Roger and Mary C. (Claiborne) Gregory and
grandson of Richard and Agnes (West) Gregory, wrote into his family Bible the
following account of his ancestry:1

"Memo. There were two sisters named Mary Cole and Jane Cole. Mary married a
Mr. West, a lineal descendant of Lord Delaware, by whom she had two sons, John
and Thomas West. After the death of Mr. West Mary married Ferdinando Leigh,
by whom she had a son and daughter, viz.: WiIliam and Mary. William Leigh
married a Miss Watkins, of Chesterfield,

[page 255]

by whom she had Benjamin Watkins Leigh and several daughters. Jane Cole, the
other sister, married Colonel Nathaniel Claiborne, by whom she had two sons,
viz.: Thomas and William, and five daughters. viz.: Mary Cole and others.
Mary Cole [Claiborne] married Roger Gregory, by whom she had Richard Gregory
and five other sons and a daughter.1 Jane Claiborne then married Stephen
Bingham, by whom she had a son named Roscoe Cole Bingham. After the death of
Bingham she married a Colonel Francis West.

Roger Gregory (my father) was the son 0f Richard Gregory and a Miss West, the
sister of Colonel Francis West, by whom she had three sons -- viz.: Roger,
Richard and West Gregory -- and several daughters.

Roger Gregory (my father) married Mary Cole Claiborne, by whom she had RIchard
and four other sons, as above stated. Richard married the widow of William
Broadnax and daughter of Colonel Seth Ward, by whom she [sic] had four
children, viz.: Martha Ward, Richard, Maria and Seth. Martha married General
John Pegram, of Dinwiddie, by whom she had five sons -- James West Pegram and
four others -- and several daughters.

After the death of Mary Broadnax, a daughter of Colonel Seth Ward, Richard
Gregory married Elizabeth Wilkinson, daughter of Colonel Nathaniel Wilkinson,
of Henrico, by whom he had Dr. William W. Gregory and four other sons and six
daughters. Dr. William W. Gregory married Elizabeth R. Taylor, daughter of
Thomas Taylor, of Richmond, by whom he has three sons at this time (June,
1843), viz.: Thomas, Richard and William. The above is correct from the best
information I can obtain and recollect.
RICHARD GREGORY.

"N.B. I expect my grandmother Gregory was either the daughter or
granddaughter of Lord Delaware, who was named West."2

The accounts quoted above states that Richard and Agnes (West) Gregory "had
three sons and several daughters." The three sons are named as: (1) Roger
Gregory (born May 1, 1729; died October 2, 1803), of whom we have a full
account; (2) Richard Gregory, and (3) West Gregory (who, with others, was a
sponsor at the baptism of Richard Gregory [son of Roger and Mary Cole (
Claiborne) Gregory], February 2, 1758).

1 This account of his family by Richard Gregory (1758-1844) is taken from the
Richmond Standard, Volume II., No.4, September 27, 1879. These data were
communicated to the Standard with the following note: "Responding to the
request in the 'Notes and Queries' Column of The Standard for information
relative to the West family, I send a copy of a transcript which I made from
the family Bible of my brother-in-law, Dr. William W. Gregory, of Charlotte,
North Carolina, when I was at his house in the year 1869. The Bible in which
the record is contained is a quarto volume entitled 'The Self-Interprrting
Bible (&c.].' By the late Rev. John Brown, Minister of the Gospel at
Haddington. New York. 1806: and in it is written: "RICHARD GREGORY'S BOOK.
