Notes for Nancy Lavina WATSON

A descendant gave me the name of Nancy Watson for the wife Ambrose married in
1845. The name in the 1850 census is Lavina. I got the following information
in several exchanges with the informant.

The marriage record:
"MARRIED- At Pleasant Hill Church ... by the Rev. J. C. Green ... on the 29th
... Mr Ambrose Green to Miss Nancy Watson, eldest daughter of Capt. Thomas
Watson. The year was 1845, location Greenville, Greenville Co., SC."

Confirming details:
"Yes it is Nancy Watson that is Ambrose Green's wife. The year date was 29 Jun
1845."

Notes for Sarah L WATSON

1880 Census, Gwinnett County, Georgia, 16 June, Harbins District, Enumeration
District 125, page 29A, Hse/Fam #Unreadable (Faded)
Watson, John D W M 24 Farmer GA GA GA
Watson, Nancy W F 24 Wife Keeping House GA GA GA
Watson, Sarah L W F 2 Dau GA GA GA

Sarah is referred to as Sallie/Sally in public and family sources. Her
obituary mentions that she was known to her friends as Aunt Sally. See
details of her family and living situations in Notes for her husband John
Henry Lynch.

Other life details are given in the obituary. We know from censuses, like the
1880 one above, that her family lived in Gwinnett, County, Georgia, near
Atlanta. One genealogy says she was born in Atlanta. It is possible she was
born in a hospital actually in the city of Atlanta, which is in neighboring
DeKalb County. However, her obituary words it this way:

"Sally Watson was born near Atlanta, Georgia, May 27, 1878." This seems to
indicate she was born at home or in the county where they lived. The 1880
census indicates they lived in an unincorporated district of Gwinnett County.
So her birth was likely in Gwinnett County, not the city of Atlanta, as the
Carter-Rippetoe genealogy reports. The newspaper article about the 50th
Wedding Anniversary of Sallie's parents (in Erick, Beckham County, Oklahoma)
says that they were married in Gwinnett County, Georgia, and lived there until
they moved to Texas.

The obituary tells us her family moved to Ennis (Colin County), Texas, in 1888
("when she was 10 years old"). Her parents' 50th Wedding anniversary story
says they moved to Hill County, Texas, which is a couple of counties south of
Ennis. It is likely they did move initially to Ennis, then settled in Hill
County. Sally and John were married in Navarro County, west of Hill County.
Where and how they met is not clear.

Family genealogies report that Sally married John Henry Lynch in Barry, Texas,
on 26 August 1894. This information is also reported in the detailed
obituary, published in the Carnegie newspaper (newspaper name and exact date
uncertain)..

Sally's obituary tells us she died at 6:15 PM on Tuesday, 13 October 1953, in
the home of her son Horace John. She had been ill for a month. The obituary
says she was visiting Horace in Watonga, Blaine County, Oklahoma, when she
died. It is not clear if she had been there the whole month of her illness.
The obit does not specify her illness.

We are told that Sally's funeral ceremony was held in the Carnegie Church of
Christ, Carnegie, Caddo County, Oklahoma. Sally her husband John had been
members of this church all the years they lived in Carnegie. The service was
conducted by Sam Evans of Chickasha (Grady County, Oklahoma), assisted by Bill
Hamrick, minister of the Carnegie Church. Pitcher Funeral Home managed the
arrangements and interment on Thursday, 15 October 1953, in the Carnegie
Cemetery.

Her memorial on Find a Grave includes her obituary.

Mrs. H.H. Lynch, 75, known among her friends as Aunt Sally, died at 6:15 p.m.
Tuesday in the home of her son, Horace in Watonga. She had been ill for a
month and was visiting in Watonga at the time of her death.

Services will be at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the Church of Christ with Sam Evans
of Chickasha conducting the rites. He will be assisted by Bill Hamrick,
minister of the church. Arrangements are in charge of Pitcher's and burial
will be in the Carnegie cemetery.

Sally Watson was born near Atlanta, Ga. May 27, 1878. When she was 10 years
old she moved with her parents to Ennis, Texas. She was married to John H.
Lynch Aug. 26, 1894 at Berry, Texas.

Mr. and Mrs. Lynch came to Carnegie in 1905 and located on a farm in the Union
Corner community northwest of town. They came to Carnegie in 1918 and engaged
in the cafe business, retiring in 1943. Mr. Lynch died July 15 of this year.
Mrs. Lynch was a member of the Church of Christ.

Notes for Walter Earl WATSON

A genealogy reports that Walter was born in Farmington, Texas.

Ruby Lee Christian
Birth 24 Apr 1893 in Bryans Mill, Cass, Texas
Death Apr 1980 in Phoenix, Maricopa, Arizona
Parents:
George Bartley Christian (Birth 10 Jun 1858 in Mississippi, Death 9 Jun 1904)
Mary Francis Bell (Birth abt 1863 in South Carolina, Death 1934 in Phoenix,
Maricopa County, Arizona)
Spouse Walter Earl Watson Sr
(Birth 13 Jan 1892 in Farmington, Texas, Death 1958 in Prescott, Yavapai,
Arizona [records show death in Bakersfield CA in 1968])
-- Bates, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/2048179/person/495509703

The town of Farmington does not even appear on the list of locations in Family
Tree Maker, by ancestry.com. But I found out about this community in the
Texas Handbook online.

--------------------------
Farmington, Tx (Grayson County). Farmington is on Farm Road 1417 ten miles
south of Sherman in south central Grayson County. The first settlers arrived
in the area in the mid-1840s. Community development occurred through the
efforts of William W. Wheat, Henry Campbell, and Samuel C. Watson. A post
office opened in 1861. By the end of the Civil War Farmington had established
itself as a school and church community for area farmers.

By 1885 it had three churches, a school, a general store, a cotton gin, and a
gristmill. The population slowly increased over the next two decades, to peak
of 171 in 1904. That year postal service ended, and over the next few decades
the number of residents steadily declined. By the end of World War II
Farmington had fifty residents, a church, a school, and a general store. The
population was estimated at twenty from 1940 to 1990. In 2000 the population
was thirty-eight.

The Bates genealogy above reports that Walter Earl died in Prescott, Yavapai
County, Arizona. (This is about 90 miles north of Phoenix the mountains.)
But funeral and burial information indicates he died in Bakersfield,
California, and his funeral and burial were in Phoenix, not Prescott. He was
buried in the Greenwood Memorial Park in Phoenix. The year of death is also
wrong. The Bates genealogy reports he died in 1958, but all official records
indicate it was 1968.

In what appears to be the correct record for Walter, a WWI draft registration
reports his birth in Sherman, which follows the common practice of reporting
the largest town around, was probably a good reference for those outside the
area who would not recognize Farmington. This record has the same birth date
as the Bates genealogy above. His wife's family were also in Abilene, and
then moved to Phoenix, as Walter and Ruby did.

in September 1918. We can narrow the time of the move to 1918.
