Mary got married about 1855, according to the age of her oldest child in the
1860 census. In her household is a a 66-year-old female named Z Wüst
matching Mary's mother Cecilia, with b irth in France and abotu 1794, same as
in 1850. This Z would represent the German spelilng of the name as Zezilia or
similar. Though most genealogies and the 1850 census spell her name Cecilia,
as common in English, on her gravestone, which is otherwise in German, it is
spelled Caecilia.

That surname appears to be the French form of the German surname of Mary's
father, spelled Wiest and Weast in other forms. But I found that this
spelling exists in Bavaria as well. Theodore is missingt, so we can conclude
he died since the 185 census.

Some genealogies spell the name Weist, which doe snot make sense, since this
speloling represents a differenty pronunciation (""wyst). Perhaps they have a
typo for Wiest, which is pronounced "weest," the same way Weast is pronounced.
On Caecilia's grve marker, her married name is spelled Wiest. And in teh 1860
census, Cecilia's urname is spelled

census Cecilia is reported in the home of their daughter Mary Metzger, but
Theodore is missing.

Notes for Theodore John WEAST

In the 1930 census, Beatrice Addie Merryman and her husband Rama Terry are
living with widower Theodore Weast, and Beatrice is reported as Theodore's
daughter. Her maiden name is always reported as Merryman, her mother's name
after she married Walter Merryman. But Walter died in 1904.

As more information has come to light over a period of research, it appears
that Beatrice was born out of wedlock, as was her older sister Jewell, born in
1906. So she was given her mother Mary Millus's current name Merryman.

Mary Millus Merryman is reported as a widow in 1920, and Beatrice Addie
Merryman was born in 1911. It is thus likely Addie was born out of wedlock,
and was given her mother's surname from her last marriage.

Further information from one genealogy (with no documentation) indicates that
Theodore Weast was married to Rhoda Stephens at the time of Addie's birth.
Rhoda died in 1929, and it may be Theodore acknowledged Addie as his daughter
at that time. At any rate, Addie (Beatrice) and her husband Rama Terry are
living with Theodore Weast, and Addie is reported as his daughter.

One discreapancy occurs in this scenario. here in the 1930 census, the birth
state of Theodore Weast is reported as Illinois. And there is a Weast clan in
Clinton, Illinois matching this. But the birth state of Beatrice's father is
reported as Oklahoma. This type of discrepancy commonly occurs, so is not
definitive.

A discussion on Genealogy Forum mentions a Theodore John Weast who was married
to a Rhoda M Stephens in Clinton, Jefferson County, Illinois. This matches
our Theodore and Rhoda, except that researcher Nolin Christensen on Genealogy
Forums tells us that his Theodore died in Jefferson County, Illinois, in 1923
and his wife Rhoda died there in about 1920. Note that he gives no birth
date. Maybe this is another Theodore Weast and Rhoda M Stephens who are in
the previous generation.

"I'm looking for information on the children of Theodore Weast and Rhoda M
Stephens. Theodore and Rhoda died in Jefferson Co IL 1923 and 1920
respectively. Looking for Frances G Weast b Oct 1887 and Agnes Weast b Mar

Another source makes us more suspicious of the Clark-Gibbens genealogy above.
The memorial on Find a Grave for Theodore John Weast of Custer County,
Oklahoma, reports a Rhoda M Weast, born in 1868, but reports that she is a
sister of Theodore, not his wife. But Find a Grave reports no wife for
Theodore. But Theodore born in 1864 also married a Rhoda, Rhoda Stephens, as
reproted by Clark-Gibbens.

As sources were uncovered it appeared this wa a large clan of Weasts, and
several individuals named Theodore. It appears another Theodore was also born
about 1832. The only wife of the elder Theodore Weast, William's father, was
Caecilia Katherine .

In the 1850 census, Theodore and Cecilia are found in Ohio with William, born
in about 1832, as one of the children. Then in 1880 William and Rose Ann are
found in Clinton County, Illinois, and Theodore, born in 1864, is one of
their sons.

Younger Theodore and Rhoda are two children of William Weast and Rosanna
(Stephens) Weast, enumerated as a family in the 1880 census in Santa Fe,
Clinton, Illinois. There is another Theodore Weast born in about 1848, who
was also married to someone named Rhoda. There were several individuals in
this family named Theodore.

In Clinton County, Illinois and related censuses for the elder Theodore in
Ohio, most are reported as being born in Germany. Grandpa Theodore and his
wife Rose Ann (or Rosanna as the 1880 census has it), parents of William, were
both born in France. This and the form of the last name, indicate they were
German-speaking from the area of Alsace and Lorraine, territories of German
speakers, but claimed by France in the incessant European wars.

The members of this family on the German and French sides of the mountainous
border lived near each other. This is underlined by the alternative spelling
of Weist, found in several genealogies and in one correction on the name Weast
by a researcher on the 1850 census for Theodore and Caecilia.
In 1870 Theodore and Rhoda are two of the chidlren in the household of William
and rosanna Weast.

Mary Weathers 84 [b abt 1776] b NC
All were reported born in North Carolina

It appears that all the brothers and Katy moved together. In the 1860 census
Katy's husband George was 61 years old, 21 years older than Katy. George died
before the family left North Carolina. He is missing from the 1870 census,
when we find Katy and the family in Giles County, Tennessee. They are listed
as Farmers, but apparently they were only migrants on their way to Arkansas,
where we find them in the 1880 census.

In Giles County, the census lists Phillip (Phelp) age 21 as Head of the
household, and Catherine age 52 is listed second. It appears her sons have
come west without wives. The 1880 census shows that George, Phillip and
Julius married women born in North Carolina. Family sources form North
Carolina indicate that the three brothers married Padgett sisters, daughters
of Wiley Padgett. Padgetts and McSwains had a long affinity in Cleveland
County (before that part of the broader Rutherford County), North Carolina.
These two lineages were jointly intermarried with Greens and Moores, with
others like Bridges and Weathers.

Daughter Nancy McSwain is with them in Tennessee. By 1880 Nancy was married
to Henry J Turner in the Ethel area of Arkansas County where they all moved
about 1875. This 1870 census also gives us Julius' middle name. Julius is
listed in 1880 as J L and in 1860 as Julius L. Here we see no Julius but the
age of the son named Login matches Julius. Login is probably a misspelling
for Logan, since the latter name also appears later in the Arkansas McSwain
family line.

William W, his wife and son Albert, died before the 1990 census. His other
children do not reappear in this county, and have not been traced yet
elsewhere. George died in 1900, preceded by Harriet in 1897. Phillip and
family continued to live in Arkansas County. Phillip's sons and their
families appear in the 1920 census.

Another brother of these men appears as Julius in the 1860 North Carolina
census, and as J L in the 1880 census, in the house next to William, who lived
next door to Katy. J L also is unreported in later censuses. No further
details are known of him or wife Viney. Their son Samuel was buried in Ethel,
Arkansas in March 1905, but his parents do not appear to be recorded in the
1900 census. Likewise his brother J W cannot be found again.

In the 1880 Arkansas County, Arkansas, census, the age of Phillip is 31 at
this census. His birthday was 30 January 1847. Up to 13 months before the
birth of the first child would still be in the previous calendar year. I
first estimated 1846 as the likely year of marriage of George and Katy,
parents of William, J L, George and James.

Katy McSwain is reported as a 60-year-old widow in the 1880 Arkansas County
census. Neither Katy nor son James appear in censuses after 1880 (1890 data
is not available, having been destroyed by fire).

I later found the marriage registration of George and Catherine, transcribed
in the North Carolina Marriage collection at Ancestry.com These provided the
actual marriage date of 8 September 1842. This was one year after the
establishment of Cleveland County, out of the large earlier Rutherford County.

Still another Charley Weathers is very close to the profile of our Charley
from Arkansas County, Arkansas. Genealogies report him as the son of Joshua
Weathers (Birth 22 May 1846 in Alabama, Death 3 Dec 1885 in Johnson County,
Arkansas) and Tennessee (Tenny) Mathis (Birth 9 Apr 1858, Death 3 Apr 1884 in
Clarksville, Johnson, Arkansas). He was born in Coal Hill, Johnson County,
Arkansas. I have not been able to connect this family with the Weathers group
in Arkansas County, but they appear to have come from the same Weathers clan
in North Carolina and Virginia.

Charley Weathers of Coal Hill married Nora West.

In the 1880 census Etta is reported as 7 years old, which would mean she was
born in about 1873. But the birth date on her Death record and her grave is 5
Nov 1875. If this date is right, she would have been only 4 years old (5th
birthday coming up in November after the June census). I doubt if her parents
would have confused a 4-year-old for a seven-year-old. But the enumerator
might have recorded it wrong.

Her Arkansas mariage record hs the nmiddle initial of her husband as M,
instead of N, which we get form other records.
