Notes for Manuel Loranza WELCH

Birth Notes

1920 Federal Census, Grady County, Oklahoma, 20 February, Rush Springs,
District 186, page 13A, Hse #220, Fam #223
Welch, Maggie D Head Owns F W 37 Widow TN AR AL Farmer
Welch, Manuel L Son M W 17 OK NC TN

The 17-year old son here does not appear in the 1910 census, when he should be
7 years old. A 7-year-old child was reported in the 1910 census, though,
under the name Daniel. In examining all the censuses, it becomes clear that
the enumerator in 1910 wrote Manuel's name as Daniel. Daniel never appears
again, and Manuel L is well-documented.

1910 Federal Census, Grady County, Oklahoma, 3 May, Rush Springs, District
106, page 8B, Hse/Fam #153

Welch, Maggie Wife F W 27 Married 10 yrs 5 children/5 living TN AR AL
Welch, Daniel Son M W 7 Single Ind Terr NC TN

Several genealogies, though, seem to have confused Manuel with another son who
died early named Manus H. Both Manuel and Manus are buried in the Bailey
Cemetery, near Rush Springs in Grady County, Oklahoma. Manus was born in 1906
and died in 1907.

Social Security Death Index
Manuel Welch
Born 25 Jan 1903
Died Nov 1980
Last Residence Marlow, Stephens, Oklahoma 73055
Last Benefit Marlow, Stephens, Oklahoma 73055
SSN 460-34-0783 issued Texas (Before 1951)

The date of birth in the SSDI matches the age in the 1920 census for Manuel
and the 1910 entry for Daniel. The SSDI death date matches the date on
Manuel's gravestone.

The indexes of the Kentucky Death Index are confusing with two different
records/transcriptions reporting death or residence in two different counties,
with otherwise the same date and personal information. Residence and death
are reported in Gallatin and in Kenton Counties. Gallatin and Kenton are a
couple of counties apart in northern Kentucky, along the Ohio Reiver.

Social Security reports her residence as Warsaw, Gallatin County. Warsaw is
the county seat of Gallatin County. If she died in Warsaw, she died in
Gallatin County. With her residence reported as Warsaw, it seems likely she
died in Kenton County, and there was an entry error at some point that was
corrected, but the old record not deleted.

Pearl was called Pearley by her cousins, who called the twins Berley and
Pearley. My mother still loves to say the names together whenever we speak of
the family: Bearley and Pearley.

But it appears her actual name was Pearl, and Pearley was a nickname, a
euphony to match Berley. Her name is reported in the 1930 census as Pearl I,
but I have not found out what her middle name was. Cousins I have asked do
not know her middle name.

Tom and Maggie married in Rubottom, Oklahoma. Rubottom is a town in Love
County, Oklahoma. Rubottom is near the Red River. Green and Jackson settlers
lived on both sides of this rvier and traveled back and forth for work,
business and family visits. The town was named for William Penn Rubottom,
born in Marshall County, Mississippi, and died in Love County, Oklahoma.
Rubottom information was on a photo by Robin Flatt Olson, on RootsWeb.

There are some differences in sources on the name for the child listed here as
Menuf. I find records under the name Manuel that appear to match this person,
but age discrepancies create problems. The 1920 census has a son of widow
Maggie as Manuel L, which seems to match the grave marker in Bailey Cemetery,
Grady County, Oklahoma, in the name of Manuel Loranza. Given this census
entry with the matching name Manuel L for widow Maggie's son, this seems to be
the correct name.

There is also a grave for a Menus H Welch. This is perhaps one source for the
genealogies that have this name for the child matching Manuel. This grave
reports that Menus died in 1917, explaining why he appears in only one census.
Several genealogies seem to have confused Manuel and Manus. I don't think I
have seen one that has both names.

Tugmons are buried in the Duncan cemetery. There is one J T L Roy Tugmon,
that may be Leroy, buried in a joint grave with what would be his first wife

Actually, this type of error is not unusual in gravestones, unfortunately.

A family source provides death information and other family details, but does
not cite the source of the information.

Anne Wells Welles
Birth 1359 in Welle, Lincolnshire, England
Death 1396 in Castle, Kilkenny, Ireland
Parents:
John (Sir) de Welles 1324-1361

-- CoVan Family,

A well-written article in Wikipedia provides authoritative information and
family background on Anne. Note that there is a one-year discrepancy in the
death year reported in the Wikipedia article and int eh genealogy, as with the
birth year also. Reconstructions of this era vary even among formal and
official sources.

------------------
Anne Welles was born in Gainsby, Lincolnshire, England in 1360, the daughter
of John de Welles, 4th Lord Welles (23 August 1334- 11 October 1361) and Maud
de Ros (died 9 December 1388). She had an elder brother John de Welles, 5th
Lord Welles (born 20 April 1352), who married Eleanor de Mowbray, by whom he
had issue. She had a sister Margery de Welles, who married firstly, John de
Huntingfield, and secondly, Lord Scrope of Masham.

Her paternal grandparents were Sir Adam de Welles, 3rd Lord Welles and
Margaret Bardolf, and her maternal grandparents were William de Ros, 2nd Lord
Ros and Margery Badlesmere eldest daughter of Bartholomew de Badlesmere, 1st
Lord Badlesmere and Margaret de Clare.

Anne Welles was the great-great-great-grandmother of Anne Boleyn.
-- "Anne Butler, Countess of Ormond,"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Welles%2C_Countess_of_Ormonde
------------------

Note the birth year given as 1360, which is reported by some sources as 1359,
as we saw in the genealogy above. Wikipedia also reports her death and some
additional helpful details.

------------------
Anne Welles died on 13 November 1397, around the age of 37. On 26 June 1397,
Anne issued a lease to Sir John Drayton, of the manor of Aylesbury,
Buckinghamshire, and rents and appurtences of the towns of Aylesbury and
Burton.

The Earl of Ormond married secondly, Katherine FitzGerald of Desmond, by whom
he had four children. The Earl had an illegitimate son, Thomas Le Boteller
Prior of Kilmainham by an unknown mistress. He is often incorrectly listed as
a child of Anne Welles."
-------------------

The Wikipedia article helpfully proceeds to list and provide basic information
about James' and Anne's children.

-------------------
James and Anne had five children:

James Butler, 4th Earl of Ormond (1392- 22 August 1452), known as The White
Earl, married firstly, Joan de Beauchamp, by whom he had five children,
including James Butler, 5th Earl of Ormond, John Butler, 6th Earl of Ormond,
and Thomas Butler, 7th Earl of Ormond. He married secondly, Joan FitzGerald.

Anne Butler, married John Wogan, by whom she had issue.

Sir Richard Butler, of Poulstown, Kilkenny, married Catherine O'Reilly,
daughter of Gildas O'Reilly, Lord of East Breffny, by whom he had issue.

Sir Philip Butler, married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Cockayne, Chief
Baron of the Exchequer, and Ida de Grey, by whom he had issue. Elizabeth
married secondly, Sir Laurence Cheney, by whom she had a daughter, Elizabeth
Cheney, the maternal great-grandmother of Anne Boleyn.

Sir Ralph Butler, married Margaret de Berwick, by whom he had issue.
-------------------

Details are reported by this genealogy for Ann and James' son Richard.
