"Gentry West tells me John A, son of R A West and Mary Cox, died a young boy
and is buried in Lone Tree Cemetery near Stuttgartt, AR. We have no
information on H, the 4 year old son."
-- Grand Prairie Historical Society Bulletin, April 1991, pp 45

According to the 1910 census, Asberry and his second wife Susan Burke had been
married 32 years, meaning marriage about 1778. Thus H West, reported in 1880
as 4 years old, was the son of Mary Cox.

Records for a B H West, also foundas Ben H West, appear to be for this same H
West, born in Arkansas County. There is a marriage record for him in Izard
County, farther northeat along the White River. His memorial on Find a Grave
has his full name as Benjamin Hesicare West. But it is still possible this is
a different person, and maybe H West died as a child or youth before the 1900
census.

Benjamin's Social Security records report he was born in Melborn (Melbourne),
Izard County, Arkansas. This is probably, then, not the same person as H
West, son of Asberry West who lived in Arkansas County. However, Ben H West
was the second child of Asberry and his wife Mary Cox, so they could have been
in Izard County when he and John were born.

Notes for Charles Elvert WEST

Censuses have him either as Charley, Charles or Charles L West. One
undocumented genealogy has his full name as Charlie Elvert West. His Social
Security records also has the middle name as Elveret, with the proper first
name Charles. Social Security also interesting indicates that his name for
permanent records was changed after his death to simply L West. This seems
odd, since the standard format is normally First name, Middle Initial, Last
name.

Notes for Charles Winston WEST

We first see Charley (Charles W) West in the 1880 census, as a child of 6 with
his family in Prairie Township, Arkansas County, Arkansas. Charley is the
oldest child, and he and all his siblings were born about 1874, after his
parents moved there, apparently from Tennessee. His father A S West is a
brother of Rufus Asberry West.

The initials of his father, A S, stand for Andrew Simpson West. His mother is
Sara Jane Hallett, Andy's first wife.

I notice that this 1920 census was earlier in the year than the 1880, and yet
Charley's age of 26 is yields the same birth year, 1874. Since the census is
dated February, this would make it seem he was either born in January 1874 or
some time during the previous 8 months in 1873.

Yet in 1930 he loses two years. In 1930, his age of 54, yields a birth year
of 1876 or perhaps 1875.

1930 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 10 April, Prairie Township,

West, Clarence Son M W 12 TX AR AR

Note that in this census, Maggie's place of birth is reported as Indiana, as
in the previous census. However, the birthplace of the mother of all the
children is reported instead as Arkansas! Also, Charley's parents once again
have the correct states of birth, father North Carolina and mother Tennessee,
as reported in 1880.

The older children, Jesse, Lavada and Homer are now out on their own. Emma,
Clarence and Josie have been born since the last census. Emma later marries
Oregon Knowlton Jr as his second wife. Josie married William E Padgett.

----------------
Cyrus Lester Mcswain Sr, Tissie's son, was married to my grandma's sister
Eunice Davis and Kevin [McSwain]'s wife Gina comes through the Criswell line
from Lavada Mae West. Lavada Mae was daughter of Charles Winston West. He
was Eunice Davis' uncle.

Eunice and my grandma Lela Bridgette Davis were daughters of great grandma
Maggie West, who married Alex Davis first and had several girls. When Alex
died she married Henry Oliver Marcum. H O had two kids by his marriage to a
Rosie? (I can't find what her last name was.) She died then H O married
Maggie West then H O's boy Roy Marcum married Lela Davis, Maggie West Davis'
daughter.

So I wound up with two great grandparent sets that way on them. Roy and
Lela's daughter Maggie Marcum (mom) married my dad Floyd Utley.

I notice that for the first three entries the enumerator has designated the

also that Opal is a son, not a daughter, and is married to Thelma.

Ron West provided the link to Mary West Rumera's genealogy of the West

lacks a George W West, thought by some West researchers to also be a son of
George and his wife Colista McHanie.

are living in the household of her widowed father, Benjamin West. The
enumerator lists her children as Ben's children, even giving them the last
name of West! We know their name was Bradley. The youngest is correctly
named in the 1880 census, where he is listed as John K Bradley. In this
census, the head of the household is Elmina, and her father is in her

After Oregon's death, Emmie married a Dickson. Only outline details were
available from an obituary index listing published 10 Aug 2009. No full
obituary has been found. Emmie was living in Water Valley, Mississippi when
she died. This short obituary index entry also gives us the town of her
birth, Alvord, in Wise County. The county had been discovered in a lone

His marriage record shows Eulis married Nora Bitner in June 1918. But in the
1920 census, he is still reported in teh census in his parents' home and
single.

His name is Tete in 1920. I suspect that his full name was Eulis Tete. No
other records occur with this name or nickname Tete. Most records have only
Eulis, and his military records indicate he had no middle name. But his name
in his daughter Lorene's obituary is reported as Eulis Simpson West. This
name occurs nowhere else, and Eulis had a brother named George Simpson West.
The name Eulis Smpson West could have been an error of Lorene's family
members' report to the newspaper, or the newspaper's error.

But several records or references with him and his son Eulis together report
him as Senior and his son as Junior, or his son as Junior and the father with
no other designation. Like the 1940 cernsus. His son is reported in numerous
records as Eulis Simpson or Eulis S West Jr.

If the name Tete or Teate which occurs on some early records is in fact a
valid name, it is likley that Eulis is his first name and Teat is the second.
