Ron West provided the link to Mary West Rumera's genealogy of the West
lineage. For George West, born ca 1776, she has a list of children. Her list
lacks a George W West, thought by some West researchers to also be a son of
George and his wife Colista McHanie.

----------------
GEORGE WEST (BENJAMIN, WILLIAM, JOSEPH P) was born 1776 in Spartanburg County,
South Carolina, and died 1859 in Gilmer County, Georgia. He married EDITH

Aft. 1850 in Gilmer County, Georgia.

A marriage record in the Pickens County Marriage Book appears to be for Mary
(Polly) and George Campire (or Campmin). Two different transcriptions of the
marriage license are found in the Ancestry.com library, one with each
spelling. The marriage occurred in April 1860, then Mary and Geowrge appear
in the 1860 census in June, with her father George in their household.

On the marriage record the clerk wrote Mary's name as Polly Rest, but the
judge who performed the ceremony wrote it as Mary Rast. The surname Rast may
be from a previous marrige for Mary. When they married, George was about 52
and Mary about 53 (ages in the 1860 census).

her household.

In the 1860 census George's surname appears to be written Campmin. But it is
queezed and scribbly near the end. Mary's husband is found listed with this
name in several genealogies, with no further information. In the 1870 census,
the name is clearly Campmire, and the personal details of George W and Mary
match on the two censuses. The date for this marriage record matches their
appearance as husband and wife in the 1860 census.

Family genealogies I find have Annie's name a Opal Annie, though the 1900
census has O as her middle initial.

There is a one-year discrepancy, as happens very often in the 1900 census,
between the census birth date and family sources in genealogies. The census
reports that Annie was born in Mar 1898, but family sources report the birth
was 7 March 1897. Her age reported in the censuses matches 1898 better.

Notes for Paul D WEST

Edith McSwain Jenkins, who went to school in St Charles, reports that Burgon
and Edith West had three children, Paul, Judy and Carolyn.
-- Edith McSwain Jenkins, personal communication to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 21
September 2018

Edith also provided the following insights on the Wests. Confirming that
Carolyn was two years older than her (thus school class of 1964, born about
1946) and Judy was a year older than her brother, thus born about 1943,
matches records found for them. No records could be found for Paul West.
Edith recalled that he was about a year younger than Carolyn and right out of
high school married Gynelle Marshall, daughter of Charlie Marshall. But Edith
says that marriage did not last long.

I will be posting all information tomorrow after I get to funeral home. I do
plan to take Paul to St Charles where his mom is at. I will post day and
time. The funeral home needs 1500.00 and he is setting up a fund there so
people can donate. As most know Paul’s truck was stolen from his apartment.
I have had so many calls from people who wanted to help but I was planning on
selling his truck and paying.

7 September 2019
Update Paul West. I now have Paul’s ashes and plan a trip on a near Sunday
to put on his moms grave. Will let everyone know date. Next is our fund set
up at Bishop-Crises funeral home; send to P O Box 720, Greenbrier Ark 72058.
We need 1500.00 and Jeff will be keeping a total as we go along so we do not
go over. I will be posting total every few days. As most know I did have it
covered by selling Paul’s truck but someone stole it from his apartment.

7 September 2019
I am planning on a grave side on September 22 at 2.30 for Paul. It will be at
St Charles Cemetery.

8 September 2019
Paul’s service will need to be at 3.00 pm September 22. Brother John Fred

Notes for Polly WEST

It is possible (and the more I have worked on this famliy the more likely it
seems) that the source from which I got the name Polly West as a spouse for
this William Strange was in error. I have found a William Alaway Strange
married to a Polly West. This William was born in 1825, and the source gives
no place for William's birth, and no date or place for Polly.

But another source showing a Polly West married to a William Strange has the
date of 1816 for Polly's birth, and in North Carolina. That source has no
date or place for her reported husband William. 1816 seems early for a birth
date of the wife of William Alaway Strange born in 1825. One child reported
by the former source is Nancy, which is one of the several children reported
for William Alaway and his wife Polly. So without the date discrepancy, this
could be the same couple.

Other sources reporting on William Alaway spell his middle name as Allaway and
Alloway. The grave information in Stillwater, New York, seems likely to be
from another family of similar name that has been confused with William
Strange of North Carolina or Tennessee. The Strang family of New York
probably derives from a German family originally named Streng (Strong).

One genealogy of this family, with no documentoaitn provided but reporting
considerable details of Dates and places, reports that Polly's last name was
Stewart. This genealogy reports no parents for Polly. The birth date given
is the same as that which other sources have for Polly West.

Polly West is reported in the Stillwater census for 1850, with her youngest
child Orren (Orrin) in her household. I don't find any of her chidlren living
nearby.

A second genealogy reports Polly's name as Stewart, and reports a death date
in 1855 matching the find-a-Grave memorial for Polly West Strang. This
genealogy lists her under the name Mary Stewart (Polly is the nickname for
Mary). The source cited is Durkee's Saratoga County Epitaphs, but the
relevant text is not included. Perhaps after the 1850 census, she married
someone named Stewart before her death in 1855, as reported by this genealogy.

Note that the birth date in this genealogy differs from Asberry's grave
marker, which says 6 February 1849.

I found a West family that was similar but did not quite fit. In the 1880
census, A S West and wife SJ West were in Prairie Township of Arkansas County.
Age and birth place indicated this might be a brother of Asberry (Rufus).
Later I found an entry for an A S West in 1910, next door to R A and Susan,
heightening the likelihood that these are two members of the same family.

This is Andrew Simpson West, Asberry's older brother. The 1860 census for
their family in North Carolina, found only years later, indicates Andrew S was
the oldest child and Rufus A the second. They are in the household of their
mother, a widow's head of household. In 1870, as we saw above, the whole
household of West chidlren were reported in Rufus' household in Prairie
Township pf Arkansas County, Arkansas. Except for Andrew, who was presumably
in his own household.

The Grand Prairie Historical Society gives us some help in understanding the
listing here. Susan is Asberry's second wife. The mother of J A (John A)
listed in 1880 was Mary Cox.

"Gentry West tells me John A, son of R A West and Mary Cox, died a young boy
and is buried in Lone Tree Cemetery near Stuttgartt, AR. We have no
information on H. the 4 year old son."

Living just 4 houses away in 1920 we find Frank West and his wife Perarl, with
their three sons. Frank is Asberry's nephew, the son of Asberry's brother
Simp (A Simpson).

I got a note from a family member also looking for more information on the
West family, informing me of Rufus Asberry's the burial place.

"Do you have any documents on West and his marriage to Susan Burke? She is my
ggAunt. We just got in touch with West's daughter married to Padget, lives in
Ethel Ark. Rufus is buried in White River Chute Cemetery and I am hoping to
get photos of the Wests in there. They are not listed in the Cemetery book
but his [grand]daughter said he is there."

I was surprised to find that the Arkansas Death record Index reports a
different date of death, over a year later than the gravestone. This may
indicate that the footstone on his grave was laid much later than death, and
some error of recording or copying led to the engraving of the incorrect date.

I have seen this type of error this in other cases also. Sometimes the grave
will have a year later, sometimes a year earlier. No other similar person
seems to be found in Arkansas County to match Asberry for this date. This may
also be an error in transcribing the Index from handwritten form to the
typewritten form.
