Elizabeth Wydville Woodville
Birth 1437 Grafton Regis, South Northamptonshire Borough, Northamptonshire,
England
Death Jun 8, 1492 Bermondsey, London Borough of Southwark, Greater London,
England

British monarch, Queen consort of King Edward IV. The eldest daughter of Sir
Richard Woodville and Jacquetta of Luxembourg. She married John Grey, a
Lancastrian knight, in 1452. She had two sons by this marriage. Grey was
killed at St Albans in 1461. She secretly married Edward, the Yorkist claimant
to the throne, on May 1, 1464. She was crowned on 26 May 1465, the first
commoner (though well-blooded) to become Queen. Elizabeth was beautiful, but
selfish and calculating, demanding favors, grand marriages, and titles for her
family members. She bore 10 children, 2 sons and 5 daughters survived to
adulthood.

When Edward died suddenly in 1483, all of their children were declared
illegitimate, their two sons were held in the Tower of London (the Princes in
the Tower), and Richard III took the throne. Elizabeth then conspired with the
Lancastrians, promising Henry Tudor her daughter Elizabeth of York in marriage
if he could take the throne from Richard. When Henry VII became King, all of
her children were legitimized once more. Now simply Dame Elizabeth Grey, she
retired to Bermondsey Abbey, where she died at the age of 56.

Notes for Jacquette Baroness Strange WOODVILLE

"Jacquetta Woodville (1445-1509), married John le Strange, 8th Baron Strange of
Knockin."
-- Wikiedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacquetta_of_Luxembourg

The French form, which would be favored by the Plantagenet line, was Jaquette.

Jaquetta's mother was Jaquetta of Luxembourg. Her father was Jaquetta's
second husband, after her first husband died befre they had any children.
Jaquetta of Luxembourg married Sir Richard de Wydeville (Woodville).

--------------------
First marriage
On 22 April 1433 at age 17, Jacquetta married John of Lancaster, 1st Duke of
Bedford at Therouenne. The Duke was the third son of King Henry IV of England
and Mary de Bohun, and thus the grandson of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster,
himself the third son of Edward III.

Jacquetta was a fourth cousin, twice removed of Sigismund of Luxembourg, the
reigning Holy Roman Emperor, and King of Bohemia and Hungary.

The marriage was childless and the Duke died on 15 September 1435 at Rouen. In
Philippa Gregory's novel The White Queen Jacquetta is referred to as 'Jaquetta
Rivers' but in fact and as was customary at the time, after her second
marriage Jacquetta retained the title of her first husband and was always
known as the Duchess of Bedford, this being a higher title to that of
countess.

Second marriage
Sir Richard Woodville, son of Sir Richard Wydevill who had served as the late
Duke's chamberlain, was commissioned by Henry VI of England to bring the young
widow to England. During the journey, the couple fell in love and married in
secret (before 23 March 1437), without seeking the king's permission.
Jacquetta had been granted dower lands following her first husband's death on
condition that she did not re-marry without a royal licence. On learning of
the marriage, Henry VI refused to see them but was mollified by the payment of
a fine of £1000. The marriage was long and very fruitful: Jacquetta and
Richard had fourteen children, including the future Queen Consort Elizabeth
Woodville. She lost her first-born son Lewis to a fever when he was 12 years
old.

By the mid-1440s, the Woodvilles were in a powerful position. Jacquetta was
related to both King Henry and Queen Margaret by marriage. Her sister,
Isabelle de Saint Pol, married Margaret's uncle Charles du Maine while
Jacquetta was the widow of Henry VI's uncle. She outranked all ladies at Court
with the exception of the Queen. As a personal favourite, she also enjoyed
special privileges and influence at court. Margaret influenced Henry to
create Richard Woodville Baron Rivers in 1448, and he was a prominent partisan
of the House of Lancaster as the Wars of the Roses began.

Another compilation provides more detail on the record of marriage for George
W Woodard and Mary Self (spelled Selph in some instances), who appears to be
Mary E Terry, whose first husband was Nathaniel Self, but whose grave says she
died on 1 Apr 1881.

There is also another earlier marriage record for a George W Woodward, who
appears to be this same individual. That record reports that George W
Woodward married a Caroline Terry in 1877.

Age 30, Birth Year abt 1847

This Caroline Terry appears to be Mary's sister. In the 1880 census, Caroline
is enuemrated in her father's home under the name Caroline Woodward. Yet
Caroline was reported as a widow. Was this an enumerator error? In the 1880
census, next door to Isom, his new wife Celia and his daughter Caroline
Woodward, is George W Woodward, who appears to be the same person reported as
Caroline's husband in their marriage record. But George is also reported as
widowed.

Maybe Caroline and George were divorced. But in that case, why would
Caroline's sister take the chance of marrying the same George Washington
Woodward a year later? And in George's 1880 household is Mary Self, also a
widow, who matches Caroline's sister and Isom's daughter Mary E Terry, who
married Nathaniel Self.

Mary is reported as George's niece. I initially thought it was through her
husband Nathaniel Selph, and a few hours later was able to confirm that when I
found his mother's memorial on Find a Grave. His mother was Mary Woodward,
George's sister.

Terry, Robert W M 5 Son of the W (?) AR AR KY
Self, Elizabeth C W F 2 Dau of the [designation unclear] AR AR KY
Woodward, Ann W F 72 Mother Widow Resides with Family KY KY KY

The name and designation of the two children is confusing. Elizabeth Self is
documented in family information as Mary's daughter, but she has the same
designation as Robert Terry. They are reported as "Son/Daughter of the
". The two children have the same birth
states reported for themselves and parents. They appear to be siblings, both
children of Mary. Then why the different surnames? But Mary and Nathaniel
are reported to have had only one child.

June Yeager, a granddaughter of of Elizabeth, reports to me that Elizabeth was
the only child of Mary and Nathaniel before he died of gas poisoning while
digging a water well.

In the 1880 census, next door to George on the other side is another Woodward
household, headed by John C, with his wife Sarah C and several children.

In 1881, George married his niece (by marriage apparently) Mary E Terry Self.

The 1910 census confirms that George has married 4 times.

children/2 living AR MO MO [b abt 1848]

Previous censuses have reported George born in Kentucky and both his parents
in Kentucky.

Another aspect of the family configuration is confirmed in this census also,
when I find Caroline (spelled Carolina here) and her second husband Presely
Bowman living only three hosues away. The census reports this is the first
marriage for Presely and the second for Caroline.

1910 Federal Census, Johnson County, Arkansas, 7 May, Pilot Point Township,
District 63, page 9B, Hse #154, Fam #160

Bowman, Carolina [sic] Wife F W 51 Marriage 2 Married 28 [abt 1882] yrs 9
children/8 living KY KY KY [b abt 1859]

This seems to confirm that George and Caroline were divorced. This means the
report in 1880 that they were widowed was incorrect as surmised. And Mary
Terry Selph does seem to have married George depsite the fact that he and her
sister Caroline had divorced.

"Mary marrying Caroline's first husband George Woodward jibes with what dad
had always been told. It is her grave at Ft Douglas. My dad and I would
tramp around Ft Douglas, Bowman Holler, Haw Creek and thereabouts when I was a
girl. I thought it was like another time. I have some family collectibles of
Caroline. My grandma was born on top of Bowman Holler. They were kind of wild
in there I think."

Notes for Enoch WOOLEY

----------------
I heard in my family that my great grandfather Enoch Wooley used to tease my
grandmother Sada "Sadie" Byrd Wooley by whooping like an Indian. It would
make her mad.

Andrew Gilmore's wife Lyda Byrd Gilmore died before him and he married again.
Andrew and Lyda are buried in the Gooseneck Cemetery along with his second
wife. He had some children by his second wife as well. If you look on the
Internet it has the photos of the cemetery.

Also, Elijah Myers Wooley and his wife Sarah Howard Wooley are buried at the
Harmony Cemetery and it is on the Internet. Thomas Howard Wooley and his wife
Mary Brinkley Wooley are buried at Greenwood, I believe. They are on the
Internet as well.

Notes for Lydia Emaline WOOLEY

"My great great grandmother Lyda Byrd was supposed to be Indian. She was
supposedly in the Trail of Tears. I have often wondered if her name was
actually Little Bird and they changed it to Lyda Byrd. She married Andrew
Gilmore and her daughter Sada Gilmore married Enoch Wooley. Their daughter
Lydia Wooley married Isaac Jerome Tate Sr. They called her Lyddie."
