Notes for Emma Louise WOZENCRAFT

Lists and genealogies I see list 10 children of Emma with Huddleston York. The
1900 census reports she has borne 10 children, but two of them have died.
Details are not complete, since several were born before 1880 and no census is
available for 1890. So only the first census for some children is available.
This includes Thomas, the oldest, reported born about 1871 or 1872.

Though listed in most, if not all, genealogies, and in a list on Huddleston's
Find-a-Grave memorial, the first child, Thomas, is not the child of Emma.
Censuses report this with several details in 1880 and 1900. In 1880, Thomas
is reported as a 9-year-old child. The oldest child Thomas is listed last,
normally indicating the child of a previous wife.

The 1900 census confirms that Thomas was not the daughter of Emma. That
census reports the length of marriage, telling us that Huddleston and Emma
have been married 26 years. That is, they married about 1874, about 3 years
after Thomas was born and one year before Busby was born, the first child
reported in the 1880 census.

Since the 1910 census reports that Emma had already borne 10 children and only
8 are living, one child not in any census was born and died between censuses.
Thomas is not her child, and there are 9 others listed. We do not have enough
information yet to determine which one of the children listed in 1880 or 1900
died. Four of the 5 listed in 1900 are still in the home in 1910. We have
additional information on Frances (Fannie) and her later family. So 5 are
accounted for.

Four additional children are listed in the 1880 census, making nine children
of Emma. Those children in the 1880 census would have just grown up and moved
away from the home before 1900. Another unnamed child also was born and died
between the censuses to make the total of 10 reported in 1910.

Laura died in about 1873. I have not found her death record. Abraham married
again soon after.

From the information on the 1880 census, it appears he married Emma Louise
Wozencraft about 1874, with her first child reported as 5 years old, or born
about 1875. This is confirmed in Emma's 1900 census record, which reports
that she and Huddleston have been married 26 years, thus born about 1874. He
is enumerated in 1880 under his middle name Huddleston.

The oldest child Thomas is listed last, normally indicating the child of a
previous wife. Thomas' age matches William of the 1870 census. He is known
in later censuses variously as William T, Tom W, TW or William.

Notes for Ansel WRIGHT

I have reviewed census entries for Ansel Wright, listed as apparently a son of
Telitha Green. Ansel is listed in the household of Daniel and Talitha Green
in 1850 and 1860. In 1850 his name is spelled Ansell and in 1860 Ansel. The
latter appears to be the more standard spelling of the name. For other
individuals in various families in the era, it also appears as Ancell and
Ancel.

It appears, thus, that he is a child of Daniel and Telitha. However, the name
is entered as Ansel Wright. At first this appeared to mean his name was
Ansell Wright Green.

Working with other researchers on our family line, we have not been able to
find anyone in the family lineage with the surname Wright of the given name
Ansell that might account for a middle name of Wright. We have also look for
a surname of Wright married into the family lines. There is one older Ansel
Green, but ages and relationships in his family do not clarify this question
about this Ansel Wright in the household of Daniel and Talitha.

I reanalyzed this set of entries, to see if I could determine whether Wright
was a surname for Ansel or a middle name for Ansel Wright Green. Here is the
way things look to me as of 11 May 2007. The way names are entered and ditto
marks (for last names in the same family) used on this page and neighbouring
pages are entered, the use of ditto marks, etc., the 1850 census is more
ambiguous. The enumerator did not use dittos consistently.

In 1950 Ansel is with Daniel and Telitha in Gilmer County, Georgia, but in
1860 he is with them in Tunnel Hill, in Whitfield County, Georgia. Since he
still lives with them after their move to the new location, it seems
definitely that he is Telitha's son. The Mary Wright appears to be his wife
in 1860, while they are still living in the same household with Daniel and
Telitha.

The 1850 census entry for the family looks like this:
1850 Federal Census, Gilmer County, Georgia, 9 November, Subdivision 33,
Gilmer, Georgia, Hse/Family #1204
Daniel Green 40 M Farmer SC
Telitha Green 41 F GA
Ansell Wright 13 M GA

In 1860, another person shows up in the household. After the entry for Ansel
Wright age 25 is a Mary Wright, age 22. Neither Ansel's nor Mary's name has a
ditto after the name Wright to indicate a last name of Green. It appears that
this is a separate couple in the household of Daniel and Talitha. Winny
Bearden, Talitha's older sister, is also living with the family in 1860.

A property tax index record appears to be for this Ansell in the Trikeem
District of Whitfield County.

Georgia, Property Tax Digests, 1793-1892
Ansel Wright
1858, Trickeem District, District #1049
Whitfield County, Georgia

In 1859, there was an entry for Ancil Wright in the property digest for the
Tunnel Hill District, where he was enumerated in the 1860 census.

Georgia, Property Tax Digests, 1793-1892
Ancil Wright
1859, Tunnel Hill District, District #1049
Whitfield County, Georgia

In 1860 there is an additional person, Mary Wright, who appears to be Ansell's
wife. Talitha's mother Winney Bearden is also in the household.

1860 Federal Census, Whitfield County, Georgia, 27 June, Tunnel Hill District,
p 22B, Hse #161, Family #151
Daniel Green 49 M Farmer SC
Talitha Green 51 F GA
Ansell Wright 25 M Ala [note change of state from Georgia]
Mary Wright 22 F Ala
Winny Bearden 67 F NC (Talitha's mother)

Note that the birth state for Ansel has changed from Georgia to Alabama, the
same as his wife. This could be an enumerator error. We have no indication
that Talitha's family were in Alabama. It is possible that her first husband
had moved them to Alabama, where Ansel was born. But why would his birthplace
be reported as Georgia in 1850?

This does not clarify who his father was, but the evidence up to this point
now seems to point to an earlier theory of my distant cousin Marion Mixon (in
unpublished genealogy and email correspondence) that Telitha was married to
someone named Wright before marrying Daniel. The previous name indicated for
such a father was Ansel Wright, or Ansel Wright Green, if Wright was a middle
name instead of a surname. But we can't find him any such person.

Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861-1865 (no image)

I have not been able to locate Ansel and his possible wife in later censuses.
But the overall picture from these two entries together is looking more like
the enumerator of the two censuses 1850 and 1860 intended Wright as a last
name, not a middle name.

It is also possible that Ansel's father was listed before 1850 under a
different first name. This is a frustrating aspect that is hard to run down
before 1850, where censuses had only the name of the head of the household. I
have many cases like this is virtually all lines of my family in the censuses
from 1850. You need at least two to confirm the identity of a child, and get
the names and ages straight.

Florence was apparently first married to a Johnson. A child whose name is
written oddly in the census is reported in the 1930 census, as a grandson of

by Ancestry as Tonnie. But Florence is reported under her maiden name as

In the 1940 census, Ancestry transcribed the name of Florence's son as Tonnie
and in 1930 as Tohnnie. I tried hard to make this first letter look like a J
to make Johnnie, a common first name for someone named Johnson. And the
spelling in the 1940 census -ohnnie makes it look more like Johnnie. But I
realized soon after that he was mentioned in his stepfather's obituary, and
his name there is Tommie.

Florence Johnson is enumerated in the census with her son and her second
husband Clarence Philpot. They are enumerated next door to Clarence's brother
Joseph R Philpot's family, including their father Newton.

Wesley is reported here as the son of James, but Wesley's father is reported
born in Texas, while James is reported born in Oklahoma. There is a 20-year
difference in age between Wesley and the next child here, Jean (Gene). I
would not think they had the same mother. But since James and Mary have been
married only about 5 years, Gene and Joe would be the children of the 1st
wife. Since Wesley's father is reported born in Texas, it could be Wesley is
an adopted son of the first wife.

We are told that James and Mary have been married 5 years. Letha is reported
as 5 years old, but the way they dealt with years and ages then, and the gap
in ages from the first two children, Letha would likely be the first child of
this marriage.

Joe is found in Oklahoma for the 1900 census, where members of the Wright
family moved after the birth of his younger sister Anna in about 1902. It is
not certain whether his father Moses died in Texas before the move, or after
they moved to Indian Territory. His mother married his father's brother,
James Wesley Wright in Indian Territory about 1905.
