I was uncertain about the spelling, remembering this older cousin from my early childhood, but never having seen the name written down. I thought of the name as O'Neil. I found the officially recorded spelling in the Social Security Death Index was O'Neal. However, the name is spelled in other records and family references as O'Neil. His father's name appears as Neill or Neil. I then found the marriage record in Arkansas. Clarence Yates married Dora Hazelwood in Hot Spring County, Arkansas. I have not found information on Dora and O'Neil's marriage. He was married a second time, but I do have any information on when. He has a different wife reported on his gravestone, but he died 9 years before Dora. In 1939, O'Neil is listed again in the Oklahoma City direcotry with the same type of job at another grocer. Note that no wife is reported here. Birth of Neil Yates is thought to have been in Mountain View. It is known that his parents were living in Mt. View in early years. In 1900 he is reported as 4 years old, even though his birthday was Oct 1896, and thus he has not yet had his 4th birthday. At the time of Neil's birth, Mountain View had not been established. The place was called Oakdale, and was a tent city in the former Arapaho and Cheyenne Reservation, now part of Oklahoma Territory, across the river and about two miles north of the current city of Mountain View. "The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (Rock Island) extended a line from Chickasha to the northern part of the Kiowa, Comanche and Apache Reservation in 1899. It terminated about two miles from an existing tent city called Oakdale, consisting of a store and post office on the former Cheyenne and Arapaho Reservation. ... Some Oakdale residents obtained land for a new townsite. Platted in May 1899 by the El Reno Development Company, the nearby settlement, with the Wichita Mountains looming on the south and west, was called Mountain View. The Oakdale post office was renamed Mountain View on October 9, 1900." -- "Mountain View," Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture, http://digital.library.okstate.edu/encyclopedia/entries/M/MO028.html My father, Orville Lee Jenkins, was born in Mountain View, and told me stories about growing up with the Indians in the area, and playing and hunting with them. -- Orville Boyd Jenkins Consistent with the above encyclopedia description, we see the reported residence of Neil's parents in the 1900 Oklahoma Territory is Union township of Washita County. The birthplace differs in different sources. His son Neil Yates declares his birthplace as Freestone County, Texas. Three genealogies report that William was born in Chireno, Texas, which is in Nacogdoches County. Others report Nacogdoches County, with no town. I would tend to favor the place of birth reported by his son. Details provided by the other sources also, however, lend them credibility. Early genealogies with reporting Chireno or Nacogdoches County do not report the source of the information that Chireno was the place of birth. I found two in January 2008 that gave various sources, both family and public records. It seems likely to me that Neil remembered wrongly, thinking of his knowledge that the family had lived in Freestone County, and associated that also with his father's birth. William and his son Benjamin Vail moved out to California where the men got jobs working in the oil fields in the 1920s.
