Later censuses report that Ben and Lota had one son, Ben Jr, in Oklahoma
before they moved, in 1918. Billly was born in Long Beach, California in
1925. The 1930 and 1940 censuses gives us the names and ages of both boys.Ben
and Lota got married about 1917 and moved to Caifornia between 1920 and 1925.

In 1926, Ben and his wife Lota appear in the Long Beach, California, City

is reported for Ben, but the parentheses indicate that Lota is working at the

At some point they moved to the Las Vegas Area, and this is where Lota as well
as son Ben died. There is a record of a marriage by Ben Jr there, but I have
not found the linking information or death information for his wife Grace in
California. Ben Sr died in Oklahoma, where he must have moved back to after
the death of Lota. Ben Jr and his mother Lota were cremated and share the
same crypt in Henderson, Clark County, Nevada.

Notes for Clarence O'neil YATES

I was uncertain about the spelling, remembering this older cousin from my early
childhood, but never having seen the name written down. I thought of the name
as O'Neil. I found the officially recorded spelling in the Social Security
Death Index was O'Neal.

However, the name is spelled in other records and family references as O'Neil.
His father's name appears as Neill or Neil. On a photo at age 14 months, the
name appeared to be spelied Oneal, with no apostrophe, but hte A was malformed
and was dotted like an I.

In Jenkins family records, the family always spells it Neil and O'Neil. In
June 2014 I found a 1935 City Directory in Oklahoma City with the family
spelling I remembered. Right after that I found an entry in the Chickasha
Directory with the name spelled O'Neal. This record indicates that O'Neil was
married to Dora Teeters some time before 1935. I have not found their
marriage information.

I found later city directory listings for Clarence and Dora Yates in Grand
Junction, Colorado. But they had his middle initial as H. This seemed like
them, but then I found a 1920 census, reporting they were both born in
Arkansas, which was not right for our Clarence O'Neil and Dora Teeters. I
then found the marriage record in Arkansas. Clarence Yates married Dora
Hazelwood in Hot Spring County, Arkansas.

I have not found information on Dora and O'Neil's marriage. He was married a
second time, but I do have any information on when. He has a different wife
reported on his gravestone, but he died 9 years before Dora.

In 1939, O'Neil is listed again in the Oklahoma City direcotry with the same
type of job at another grocer. Note that no wife is reported here. This
seemed a possible indication of when he and Dora divorced. His parents Neil
and Mary are also listed in this directory. But then I found them together
with two children in his parents' home in Oklahoma City.

In March 2019, O'Neil and Dora's daughter Kathryn contacted me to introduce
herself and give me some details about their family.

"Mary was my grandmother and I know that I remember meeting Asa which would
then would have been her dad once when I was very very young. [Asa was Mary's
brothere; their dad went by Joe, his full name being Joseph Asa.] Jerry and
Judy would have met and been around grandmother's family more because when
they were fifteen or sixteen, they moved to Paul’s Valley, OK to live with
our dad (C O Yates). Jerry Yates was born May 2, 1938 and Judy on Feb 14,
1940. I, Kathryn, was born in Whittier, CA. On Apr. 24, 1943 and Betty Jean
was born in Anadarko, OK on Sept. 14, 1946. Shortly after Jeanie was born,
dad left us. All of us siblings are still alive and have grandchildren and
great grandchildren."

There are public records reporting him resident in Pauls Valley, Garvin,

relate to O'Neil's second marriage, since that is where he and Dorothy were

The name of the lkast child is transcribed by Ancestry as Clen, with an

census, so we assume he died before that time. There is a burial in Mountain
View Cemetery that matches Glen, but the name is Grover Cleve Yates. The
middle name is what is usually the nickname for someone named Cleveland.
There were several Grover Clevelands in the Christian lineage related to the
Jenkinses.

Notes for Mary Ann YATES

The 1920 census says that Mary Ann was born in Texas, but the 1930 census says
it was Oklahoma. In 1920 the Yates were living near Wichita Falls, Texas, in
Burkburnett, a community on the Red River named after famous rancher Burk
Burnett, who was a close friend of Quanah Parker.

In the 1930 census Mary Ann's middle name is spelled Anne. That census has
several names misspelled, plus the writing is smeary and there are vertical
fade lines in the page which make it hard to decipher the entries.

In 1930, the family is back in Oklahoma, living in North Cobb Township of
Caddo County, Oklahoma.

The last listing is confusing. The sequence would indicate the next child
would be Naomi, and with birthday in April, the age would match Naomi's entry
in 1910. But the first letter of the name in 1900 looks very much like a b,
and the second letter perhaps a or e. The name looks somewhat like Betty, and
Ancestry.com transcribes it that way. A relative has commented on Ancestry
that it should be Naomi instead of Betty. I wonder if both were correct
names?

Notes for Neil YATES

Birth of Neil Yates is thought to have been in Mountain View. It is known that
his parents were living in Mt. View in early years. In 1900 he is reported as
4 years old, even though his birthday was Oct 1896, and thus he has not yet
had his 4th birthday.

At the time of Neil's birth, Mountain View had not been established. The
place was called Oakdale, and was a tent city in the former Arapaho and
Cheyenne Reservation, now part of Oklahoma Territory, across the river and
about two miles north of the current city of Mountain View.

"The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (Rock Island) extended a line
from Chickasha to the northern part of the Kiowa, Comanche and Apache
Reservation in 1899. It terminated about two miles from an existing tent city
called Oakdale, consisting of a store and post office on the former Cheyenne
and Arapaho Reservation. ... Some Oakdale residents obtained land for a new
townsite. Platted in May 1899 by the El Reno Development Company, the nearby
settlement, with the Wichita Mountains looming on the south and west, was
called Mountain View. The Oakdale post office was renamed Mountain View on
October 9, 1900."
-- "Mountain View," Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture,

My father, Orville Lee Jenkins, was born in Mountain View, and told me stories
about growing up with the Indians in the area, and playing and hunting with
them.
-- Orville Boyd Jenkins

Consistent with the above encyclopedia description, we see the reported
residence of Neil's parents in the 1900 Oklahoma Territory is Union township
of Washita County. They had not yet moved to Mountain View south of the
Washita River.

In the 1910 census, we find them in the new town of Mountain View, in northern
Kiowa County, in the new State of Oklahoma. In 1910, Neil is living at home
with his parents, at age 13, in Mt View, Kiowa County, Oklahoma. The family
lives on 7th street. Neil is reported as a Boot Black (Shoe Shine Boy) in a
barber shop. His father William is a manger of a department store.

In 1930, the family are back in Oklahoma, living in North Cobb Township of
Caddo County, Oklahoma. This ceuss reports that they married at age 18 (Neil)
and 17 (Mary), making marriage about 1912. Oneil's age in this census would
make his birth about 1917. His birth date on his grave is 23 July 1916.

Family information reported by Harold Christian indicates the wedding was in

are hard to read, due to write-overs, and the wide-nib pen used by the
enumerator. The last child is enumerated as Cleve, but Ancestry transcribes
the name as Clen. Ancestry transcribes the child before Glen as Betty, with
Beatrice as an alternative. I think her real name might have been Betty Jo,
as she is listed in the 1940 census. I find this name on all family
references and photos.

I found a family photo of a man and a woman among my father's photos described
on the back as O'Neill and Betty, kneeling in front of a Christmas tree with
the gifts. This would confirm Betty (Jo) as the sister of O'Neil (also
spelled as Oneil or Oneal and variously in family sources). The 1940 census
listing also confirms this relationship, with Betty Jo still in the household
as a daughter, and Oneill as a son, with his wife Dora and children.

In 1940, they were reported living in Oklahoma City. but that census says that
in 1935 they were living in Gray (spelled Grey in the census) County, Texas.
This is where Betty Jo was born. Among Jennie Jenkins' photos I found a baby
portrait made by a Pampa, Texas, studio, with no name or date, that appears to
be Betty Jo at less than one year old. (Jennie was Mary Nettie Yates'
stepmother.) From the records available, they were not in Texas very long.
They were in Caddo County, Oklahoma, in 1930, and they were in Oklahoma City
at least by the time of the 1938 Oklahoma City directory.

Notes for William Henry Vail YATES

William Henry Vail Yates and Annie Laura Horn married about 1890. They first
lived in Texas, then moved to Oklahoma Territory between 1891 and 1894.

In the 1900 census we find them in Union Township of Washita County, Oklahoma
Territory. This is in the southern aprt of what had been the Cheyenne and
Arabpaho Reservation before the establishment of Oklahoma Territory in 1890, a
little north of the Washita River.

It is not clear if the last child is listed in the 1910 census. The sequence
would indicate the next child would be Naomi, and with birthday in April, the
age would match Naomi's entry in 1910. But the first letter of the name in
1900 looks very much like a b, and the second letter perhaps a or e.

They probbaly moved south of the river to Mountain View, the renamed Oakdale
that was moved about 2 miles south of old Oakdale in 1899, after 1907, when
their first child Henry died and was buried in the old Oakdale Cemetery. In
1910 they are in Mountain View, the relocated and renamed Oakdale. The 1900
census tells us that William and Annie moved from Texas to Oklahoma Territory
between April 1891 and December 1893.

In 1910, they are living in Mountain View, Kiowa County, Oklahoma.

From the birth places and ages of the children we can see that William moved
his family from Texas to Oklahoma (Indian Territory) between 1891 and 1894.

The birthplace differs in different sources. His son Neil Yates declares his
birthplace as Freestone County, Texas. Three genealogies report that William
was born in Chireno, Texas, which is in Nacogdoches County. Others report
Nacogdoches County, with no town. I would tend to favor the place of birth
reported by his son. Details provided by the other sources also, however,
lend them credibility.

Early genealogies with reporting Chireno or Nacogdoches County do not report
the source of the information that Chireno was the place of birth. I found
two in January 2008 that gave various sources, both family and public records.
It seems likely to me that Neil remembered wrongly, thinking of his knowledge
that the family had lived in Freestone County, and associated that also with
his father's birth.

William and his son Benjamin Vail moved out to California where the men got
jobs working in the oil fields in the 1920s.
