Notes for Martha YORK

A genealogy that reports the full dates and details for all the children of
Capt William York reports a daughter Martha born in 1781, but reports her
mother as Margaret Crabtree, who was born only in 1776. It seems liekly that
Martha was a sister of Capt York. Others report Martha as a daughter of
William's first wife Ailsey (last name unknown).

Captain William YORK
b abt 1755 prob. Colony of Virginia

Ailsey (surname unknown)

We have NO idea who were the parents of William and our DNA absolutely proves
that he was NOT a member of the Jeremiah YORK family, nor the son of Joseph.
We are not even sure if his true name was YORK or was he perhaps the son of a
widow who married into the family? Therefore his line ends with him - period.

I have proven that he was the captain of the 'troop of horse' of mounted
volunteers from Randolph Co., NC - perhaps because he was literate - a
pre-requisite to 'command' - you had to be able to read and write orders,
apply for pay, etc. I did find this data in the Library of Congress records
and can send it to you if you want it.

There is confusion in the York genealogies. It may be that the Captain
William York whose information is presented here is not the father of
Elizabeth and Delilah York who married Philpot brothers. The birth of that
Captain William York is thought to be 1755 by some sources (see note below).

Tax Records report WIlliam York in Randolph County, North Carolina in 1779.

Another family researcher has reported some additional names of children.

Children of Captain William YORK R.S. and Ailsey ? were:

1. William b. aft 1779 North Carolina d. 1844 Harlan Co., KY married:
Elizabeth ? 8 known children

2. Susan b. abt 1780 North Carolina married: Stephen Wallace children
unknown

3. Martha b. 31 Jul 1781 North Carolina d. 29 Oct 1843 Washington Co., TN

4. Thomas b. 1790 Territory of the U.S. south of the River Ohio usually
referred to as the 'Southwest' d. bef 1850 married: Elizabeth McPHERSON 10
known children

5. Josiah Cowan b. 15 Oct 1799 Washington Co., Tennessee d. 1879 Polk Co.,
Georgia married: Sarah BLAKE 11 children

6. Mary 'Polly' b. 1800 Washington Co., Tennessee d. ? married: 27 Feb 1817
Moses LOONEY - children unknown

7. Elizabeth b. 10 May 1802 Washington Co., Tennessee d. 19 Jul 1884 nr.
Buchanan, Haralson Co., Georgia married: 19 Oct 1821 Roane Co., Tennessee
Captain William Allen PHILPOT 11 children

8. Delilah b. 1804 Washington Co., Tennessee d. abt 1884 Pontotoc,
Mississippi married: 30 Apr 1821 Roane Co., Tennessee James PHILPOT 8 children

9. Allen b. abt 1806 Washington Co., Tennessee d. bef 1860 married: 30 Jun
1833 Paulding Co., Georgia Elizabeth SMALLWOOD Children unknown

While not sure when these two daughters [were born] they must be older than
Elizabeth since the 6 or 7 youngest of the children moved to Georgia with
William and Ailsey. However, they were probably born between Thomas 1790 and
Josiah 1799.

10. 'Lettie' married ? HORSE

11. Margaret married ? LACY

Both of these daughters were still living when the U.S. gov't finally approved
the Rev. War pension for Captain William York
-------------------

--------------------------
As coordinator of The Descendants of Captain William York, a loosely formed
organization who worked together to find and combine information about our
ancestor ... His only marriage was to Ailsey ? (unknown) who died AFTER
William. Another William York's 2nd marriage was to the widow Crabtree and I
worked extensively and closely with the chairman of the Crabtree Org and he
could not find anyone by that name married to anyone, so we both concluded she
must have been a widow and Crabtree was not her birth name, and we did find
another William York married to this woman but it was NOT our Captain William
York who was the ONLY York who was a captain.

Ailsey and William had 11 children; William; Susan; Martha; Thomas; Josiah
Cowan (the only one of their children with a 2nd name); Mary; Elizabeth;
Delilah; Allen; Lettie and Margaret (the latter two were picked up in his
pension award). I have worked with many of their descendants and with ALL of
Josiah's descendants - it was our choice to place a memorial marker for him
beside the grave of Josiah so others could use this marker to prove his Rev
War Service. I was the one who found the records in a book of records from The
Library of Congress and there are about 9 other records that pertain to his
service.
...
Captain York was in the area of Washington County NC (or VA) that later became
TN by 1790 when his 2nd son, Thomas, was born. DNA has proven that we are not
related to ANY other York family and that William was the ONLY York male who
was a captain in the Rev War. At this point we have NO idea who his parents
were and perhaps he was the son of a widow who married Joseph since two of his
wives are not known and most other York wives are known, however, someone
cared enough about him as a boy that he was taught to read and write and one
of the very few York men who were and perhaps this is why he was elected
Captain.

This memorial and most family genealogies report Thomas as one of the 10
children referred to in the count on the 1910 census. However, Emma is not
the mother of the first child, Thomas. Censuses report this with several
details.

In 1880, Thomas is reported as a 9-year-old child. The oldest child Thomas is
listed last, normally indicating the child of a previous wife.

after Thomas was born and one year before Bershaba was born, the first child

Notes for Alma Minnie YOUNG

Alma Young was born in Greer County, Texas, in 1893.

Greer County, Texas, was an area of 1.5 million acres in the eastern panhandle
area.

"Greer County, a county created by the Texas legislature on February 8, 1860
(and named for John Alexander Greer, Lieutenant Governor of Texas), was land
claimed by both Texas and the United States."
-- Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greer_County,_Texas

The area was administered by the State of Texas, but was disputed by the
governments of the United States and the State of Texas. After a suit in the
US Supreme Court, the region was awarded to the United States. The area was
then assigned to Oklahoma Territory on May 4, 1896, and was subdivided into
several counties at the formation of the State of Oklahoma in December 1907.
Thus later censuses report that Alma was born in Oklahoma. The location was
in Texas at the time of her birth.

I left a memorial message on the obituary website for Barbara. It is
preserved on Legacy.com.

-------------
I just got the word of Barbara's death, in a letter from my mother, Lou
Gregory Jenkins. I have fond memories over the years of times with Barbara
and Roy, though it was years between times, at family reunions or various
family intersections. One time, in 1981, Edith and I, with our one and
three-year-old, stayed with them in Peoria for a week during our time in the
States from Kenya. I epxress our love and sorrow to my cousins and other
family members in the loss of Barbara.

The obituary did not have Barbara's birth date. After some time the Social
Security death Index records came online, providing her birth date, which I
did not have from family sources.
