------------------- Our starting point is Captain William York and I DO have the records to prove this - one of the highlights of my research years! Captain William York Josiah Cowan York Abraham Huddleston York Frances Gertrude 'Fannie' York Stark Ltcmdr George Arnold Stark USNR ret -- Source name withheld by request, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 17 September 2013 ------------------- The source above also contributed the following: ------------------- Captain William YORK b abt 1755 prob. Colony of Virginia d 14 Jul 1837 Carroll Co., GA married abt 1778 Ailsey (surname unknown) We have NO idea who were the parents of William and our DNA absolutely proves that he was NOT a member of the Jeremiah YORK family, nor the son of Joseph. We are not even sure if his true name was YORK or was he perhaps the son of a widow who married into the family? Therefore his line ends with him - period. I have proven that he was the captain of the 'troop of horse' of mounted volunteers from Randolph Co., NC - perhaps because he was literate - a pre-requisite to 'command' - you had to be able to read and write orders, apply for pay, etc. I did find this data in the Library of Congress records and can send it to you if you want it. -- Source name withheld by request, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 17 October 2013 ------------------- "Information needs to be proven. It may be that the Captain William York whose information is presented here is not the father of Elizabeth and Delilah York who married Philpot brothers. LACY Both of these daughters were still living when the U.S. gov't finally approved the Rev. War pension for Captain William York ------------------- -------------------------- As coordinator of The Descendants of Captain William York, a loosely formed organization who worked together to find and combine information about our ancestor ... His only marriage was to Ailsey ? (unknown) who died AFTER William. Another William York's 2nd marriage was to the widow Crabtree and I worked extensively and closely with the chairman of the Crabtree Org and he could not find anyone by that name married to anyone, so we both concluded she must have been a widow and Crabtree was not her birth name, and we did find another William York married to this woman but it was NOT our Captain William York who was the ONLY York who was a captain. Ailsey and William had 11 children; William; Susan; Martha; Thomas; Josiah Cowan (the only one of their children with a 2nd name); Mary; Elizabeth; Delilah; Allen; Lettie and Margaret (the latter two were picked up in his pension award). I have worked with many of their descendants and with ALL of Josiah's descendants - it was our choice to place a memorial marker for him beside the grave of Josiah so others could use this marker to prove his Rev War Service. I was the one who found the records in a book of records from The Library of Congress and there are about 9 other records that pertain to his service. ... Captain York was in the area of Washington County NC (or VA) that later became TN by 1790 when his 2nd son, Thomas, was born. DNA has proven that we are not related to ANY other York family and that William was the ONLY York male who was a captain in the Rev War. At this point we have NO idea who his parents were and perhaps he was the son of a widow who married Joseph since two of his wives are not known and most other York wives are known, however, someone cared enough about him as a boy that he was taught to read and write and one of the very few York men who were and perhaps this is why he was elected Captain. Alma Young was born in Greer County, Texas, in 1893. Greer County, Texas, was an area of 1.5 million acres in the eastern panhandle area. "Greer County, a county created by the Texas legislature on February 8, 1860 (and named for John Alexander Greer, Lieutenant Governor of Texas), was land claimed by both Texas and the United States." -- Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greer_County,_Texas The area was administered by the State of Texas, but was disputed by the governments of the United States and the State of Texas. After a suit in the US Supreme Court, the region was awarded to the United States. The area was then assigned to Oklahoma Territory on May 4, 1896, and was subdivided into several counties at the formation of the State of Oklahoma in December 1907.
