Notes

  • After starting with information from my Terry family sources and my personal knowledge, I discovered Terry family information on the Terry Family Website related to my lineage.  Information from this source (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~troy/ghtout/gp105.htm) was originally correlated with Jenkins Family information.  I then personallyreviewed and transcribed the census entries.  I found several spelling errors in the transcriptions on the Terry Family website.

Richard Bates has very good detail on this Terry family line and related families.  He and a couple of others in the Bates line, who appearto have exchanged information or used the same family sources, reportthe name of this person as William Joseph Terry, Sr.  I have the nameas William Barney Terry.  The name was reported by William's granddaughter, my grandmother, Julia Virginia (Jennie) Terry, in a comprehensive and fairly detailed list of names and information on her family.  She did not know family names earlier than William Barney.

It may be that William Joseph is actually the given name, but Barney was a nickname.  If so, Jennie apparently did not know that.  However,it seems unlikely he would be named Joseph, since he had a brother named Joseph Lewis (Louis) Terry.  Further, Barney is documented in the family line, since William and Constance's son John R Terry named one of his sons Barney.  He also named another son Joseph. C.

Jennie had no birth or death dates for her Terry grandparents.  We get approximate birth dates form the ages recorded in the censuses.

Sirus [Cyrus] L Terry   5 M      GA [born abt 1845]

From the 1850 census, we can see that William was born about 1811.  In September 2008, I get further details just discovered by another descendant and researcher on the Terrys.  Jacque Watkins shared with me information from Thomas Lewis Terry's family Bible.  This records an exact birth date for William, which is exactly the same as that of his brother George C Terry.  Thus they were twins, which had not been indicated in any family sources.  I had George's birthday already, and find that Thomas Lewis recorded same date of 21 July 1810 as William andGeorge's birth date.  He also reports they were born in South Carolina.  This confirms earlier family information that the Lewis' were in Pendleton District, South Carolina, which I had as William Barney's birth place, before the Terrys moved to Georgia.

John R, just born at the time of the 1850 census, is missing from this census.  He should be 10 years old in 1860.  In early analysis I concluded he must have died between the 1850 and 1860 census.  I did have him on the 1870 census, but his entry was not transcribed so it went unreported on this page.  However, I later found him with his parents in the 1870 census and with his wife and family in the 1880 census.  I do not know why he does not appear in the census of 1860.

The last child's name was transcribed on the Terry Family Genealogy website as Deatha.  The name is actually spelled Dialtha in the 1860 census. This appears to be the full form of the name entered in 1870 as Althia.  In 1880, when at age 21 she is the oldest child still in the home, her name is entered as Altha.  I do not have information for herafter she married.

In 1860 I find it interesting that living two doors down from Williamand Julia is a woman also named Dialtha.  This is Dialtha Peck, wife of W W Peck, both born in Tennessee.

I find it curious that Mary Constance is the only child whose middle initial was not recorded.  She is named Constance after her grandmother, wife of Lewis Terry.
