Mississippi Marriages, 1776-1935 Mary A. Bennett Spouse Joseph W. Philpott Marriage 27 Jan 1853 Alcorn County In 1860 Mary and Joseph are in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, but I see that their first son John W was born in Mississippi. Some later censuses report him born in Alabama, some say Mississippi. He is 6 years old here, so if he was born in Alabama they moved to Mississippi after 1854, when John was born in Alabama. In 1900 Josie is reported as the youngest child of her widowed mother, being 3 months old. Her mother Emma Belle Scruggs was first married to Martin Benson, who died before the 1900 census. That census reports that Josie was just 3 months old, and born in February 1900. Josie was the last child of Martin Benson and Rosella Scruggs Benson. Josie's sister Goldean (Glodine here) was 7 years old in 1910, meaning she was born in about 1903. Her mother Belle did not marry Charly (Charles Doyle) Jenkins until 1905. Goldean's memorial on Find a Grave mistakenly reports her maiden name as Benson, even though the 1900 census clearly indicates that Martin Benson died before 1900. Goldean's father was Charles Jenkins and his first wife, whose name we have not discovered. Or otherwise perhaps Rosella was her mother, but she was born out of wedlock, before her parents married in 1905. 1910 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 22 April, St Charles, District 12, page 3A, Hse/Fam #41 Jinkins, Charly Head M W 48 Marriage 2 Married 4 yrs MS SC MS Farmer [b abt 1862] Jinkins, Belle Wife F W 31 Marriage 2 Married 4 yrs 7 children/6 living AR Unk Unk [b abt 1879] Jinkins, Edd Son M W 16 Single AR AR AR Jinkins, Mary Dau F W 12 Single AR AR AR Jinkins, Jossie [sic] Dau F W 10 Single AR AR AR Jinkins, Goldine Dau F W 7 Single AR AR AR Jinkins, Arthur Son W M 3 Single AR AR AR Jinkins, [No Name] Son W M 8mos Single AR AR AR [b abt July 1909] Arkansas, County Marriages Index, 1837-1957 Roe Dempsey Age 30, Birth Year abt 1887 Residence Ethel, Arkansas, Arkansas Spouse Josie Benson Spouse's Age: 18 Spouse's Residence Ethel, Arkansas, Arkansas Marriage 3 Oct 1917 Arkansas County Marriage License Date 3 Oct 1917 1930 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 12 April, Prairie Township, District 24, page 3B, Public Road, Hse #51, Fam #52 Dempsey, Roc (Roe?) The Bermudez couple adopted Angela Benavides. Angela was the oldest child of her parents, Feliciana Treviño Camacho and Phillip Camacho, of Kansas City, Missouri. The Bermudezes were related to Angela's Feliciana in some way and were her gofdparents. They agreed to raise her, but they lived in very poor conditions. Angela remembered living in a train caboose. "Angela Benavides -- I was told by her that she was stolen or given to her godparents and they lived in a train caboose. Made their way to San Francisco and stayed there the rest of her life." They arranged for Angela to marry Filberto Felix. I began probing this Bernard ancestry in the Barnett line in July 2009, so there are nuances and details unclear to me. I am analyzing and evaluating differences between the genealogical sources. There are discrepancies in the reports of this child and his father. Some call him and his father Richard, while others reports they are both named Francis. Some have a generation missing, such as Patricia Boen, who reports that the son Richard was born in 1590 of a father born in 1526. This is possible, but is a great gap. Other genealogies have another generation in between. Some name the son of Francis (born 1526) as Richard and some have him as Francis. Some also name the elder Bernard as Richard, but this seems to be an error. A common date of birth for the son is 1555, but Carla Dye reports the son named Thomas was born in 1555, and the son named Francis was the one married to Mary Woodhouse, and he was born in 1558. The name of the wife is a difference here also. Some sources report here as Elizabeth Woolhouse, while others, like Carla, report her name as Mary Woodhouse. It seems logical that her name was Mary Elizabeth. Francis Bernard Born 1558 in Abington Hall, Abington, Northamptonshire, England Died 21 Nov 1630 in Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, England Parents: Francis Bernard 1530-1602, Alice Hazelwood 1525-1612 Spouse: Mary Woodhouse b Abt 1570 in St Magnus Parish, London Bridge, London, Middlesex, England, d Aft 1625 in Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, England Children: William Bernard 1598-1665, Robert Bernard 1600-1665, Margaret Bernard 1625-1683 -- Carla Dye, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/1196359/person/-1975273460 Some sources report places of death of Francis/Richard in Bedfordshire and birth of his children in Bedfordshire, while other knowledgeable descendants report that Francis Bernard who was married to Mary Woodhouse/Woolhouse moved to Kingsthorpe in Northamptonshire and his children were born there. Perhaps someone has confused two lines of Bernards, in Bedfordshire and in Northamptonshire. Here is part of a genealogy discussion on this topic. ==================================== Re: Francis Bernard and Mary Woodhouse Posted by: Kinter BernardDate: June 15, 2006 Francis Bernard (ca 1553-1620) [cf 1555 and 1558] was the son of Francis Bernard (1520-1602) [cf 1526] and Alice Haselwood. Francis was one of five sons and seven daughters. He moved to Kingsthorpe at some point and had issue. I have a family group sheet for this family which was prepared in the 1930's by a member of the LDS. -- http://genforum.genealogy.com/bernard/messages/1382.html ==================================== Re: Francis Bernard and Mary Woodhouse Posted by: Kinter Bernard Date: June 19, 2006 In Reply to: Re: Francis Bernard and Mary Woodhouse by Dianne Rutherford of 1547 Yes, I am related to you but Francis Bernard Sr and Alice Haselwood are the connection. Francis Jr married Mary Woolhouse and they had several children. However, the timing is a problem. I've seen several different dates for Margaret Benard [alternate spelling for Bernard in some sources] Gaines' birth, the most common one being around 1625. However Francis Bernard is supposed to have died in 1620. Francis [Jr] was married twice, the first time to Mrs. William Mercer and it is my understanding, from looking at Napier-Higgins that they had two daughters. Then he married Mary Woolhouse who was the sister to Francis' brother Richard's wife Alice. I am descended from Richard and Alice. As far as I know, Francis Jr. did not have a daughter named Margaret. Mary's father was indeed Anthony Woolhouse. -- http://genforum.genealogy.com/bernard/messages/1391.html ==================================== This indicates that Mary's surname was spelled as Woodhouse or as Woolhouse. Also Kinter tells us that Francis Bernard b abt 1553/1558 DID have a brother Richard, who was, in fact, Kinter's direct ancestor. This name Richard is left out of the long list of children Carla Dye reports for Francis Sr, but included in some genealogies as the only son and as the husband of Elizabeth (or Mary) Woolhouse. Note also that Kinter says he has not found a daughter Margaret for Francis, but only for his brother Richard. Perhaps the child reported above by Carla Dye, Margaret Bernard 1625-1683, as a child of Francis and Mary Woodhouse was actually a child of his brother Richard.
