The last born child of the family has a strange name. Genealogies differ on the form of the name, and it is transcribed differently in different sources. Some have the name as Dorsey or Dorsie, based on the Ancestry.com transcription in 1900. It looks like Dessie. Transcribed by Ancestry as Darsie, which it could be. But Ancestry transcribes the name in 1910 as Dessix. I found his own signature on his WWI draft registration card very clearly as Uberter Desiax, as well as matching the name as written by the registrar. There the name is Uberter Desiax. The added R on the end of Uberta seemed to represent the local pronunciation, which we still hear in rural accents. In censuses it is written Uberta. However, I found that his California Death record has it spelled that way. 1900 Federal Census, Bosque County, Texas, 14 June, Justice Precinct 4, District 7, page 7A, Hse #101, Fam #103 Briscoe, Edmond Head W M Mar 1864 36 Married 16 years AR TN TN Farmer Rents Briscoe, Frances Wife W F May 1865 35 Married 16 years 3 children/3 living MO TN MO Briscoe, Dessie Son W M Sep 1899 8mos TX AR MO In the 1910 census, Dorsey U is first reported as the last child of Edmond and Frances Briscoe. ------------------------ A genealogy of the Briscoe family called Leta's Family reports extensive details on most members of the Briscoe family, but I have found she has attached incorrect records for various families and individuals and sometimes has impossible dates for members of the same family. Leta reports incompatible birth dates for William Alexander and other children of Larkin and Elizabeth Briscoe. She reports William Alexander born 3 December 1853, but his brother John Thomas born in 28 April 1853 -- less than 5 month later! The 1900 census reports the birth of John Thomas as April 1853, so the birth of W A is likely wrong. I have not been able to check all the details on this family myself, so expect other errors to be present. -- Leta's Family, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/2804391/person/-1815879730?ftm=1 ------------------------

The last two sons Joseph and Henry were only a year apart in age. They moved to Texas about 1867 or early 1868. The history cited above reports that William established the first gin in Robertson County, Texas. We are told in historical records that the gin, located in the new county seat of Calvert, was already the biggest gin in the world in the 1870s. In the 1880 census, William's family was enumerated in Bald Prairie area of Robertson County, Texas. The birth states of the children reported in that census tell us that William moved his family to Texas in about 1865 or 1866. Trains started stopping on the new line in 1869. "One of the earliest settlers was Joseph Harlan, who received a land grant in 1837. The townâs namesake, Robert Calvert, established a plantation here around 1850. The Texas Central Railway laid tracks to Calvert in 1868 with the trains arriving the next year. Population was drawn from the communities of Sterling and Owensville and in time, Calvert replaced Owensville as the Robertson County seat of government. A post office was granted that same year (1868) and Calvert prospered as a cotton shipping point. In the 1870s the town reportedly had the largest cotton gin in the world." -- "Calvert, Texas," TexasEscapes, http://www.texasescapes.com/CentralTexasTownsSouth/Calvert-Texas.htm If William was the one who put in the first gin there, he set right to it early on. This was already a big cotton area, as noted in the article below. Already in 1871 the gin there was the largest in the world. Sue says that this was the first gin in the country. I suspect she had a typo, meaning the first gin int he county. Perhaps William established the first gin in Robertson County, Texas. Wikipedia notes that by 1878, Calvert had several gins. "The earliest known white settler in the area was Joseph Harlan, whose 1837 land grant laid five miles south of what is now the City of Calvert. In 1850 Robert Calvert, for whom the town was named, established a plantation west of the town. ... By 1878, Calvert was a thriving community with 52 businesses. ... The community remained a major cotton center with many gins, cotton compresses, and cottonseed oil mills, until 1899 when the town was damaged by floods." -- "Calvert, Texas," Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvert,_Texas William Greenberry Briscoe Birth 16 May 1824 Apple Grove, Morgan County, Alabama, USA Death 22 Jul 1908 (aged 84) Frederick, Tillman County, Oklahoma, USA Burial Frederick Memorial Cemetery, Frederick, Tillman County, Oklahoma Spouse Sarah Ralls Briscoe 1827-1888 Children: Nancy Adaline Briscoe Dove 1851-1918 Benjamin Franklin Briscoe 1854-1929 William Briscoe 1855-1901 George M Briscoe 1857-1939 Edmond Willis Briscoe 1861-1939 Joseph Alonzo Briscoe 1866-1945 Henry Clark Briscoe 1869-1948 Created by Paula Feb 20, 2009 -- Find A Grave Memorial #34036621, https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/34036621 Posted with the memorial is a short obituary cut from a local paper. A Jumpp provides some interesting details about John II Duke of Brittany. His sumamry of facts briefly introduces John thus: John II, Duke of Brittany Birth 1239, Death 18 November 1305 Parents John I, Duke of Brittany 1217-1286, Blanche (Princess of Navarre Wife Beatrice of England 1242-1275 Daughter Marie of Brittany 1268 - 1339 -- Jumpp Family, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/6989980/person/-489669110?ftm=1 He provides a story form historical sources that genriches thsi outline considerably, and provides more life facts. John II, Duke of Brittany John II (in Breton Yann II, in French Jean II de Dreux) (1239 - November 18, 1305) was Duke of Brittany and Earl of Richmond, from 1286 to his death. He was son of Duke Jean I and Blanche, princess of Navarre. On January 22, 1260, John married Princess Beatrice of England, a daughter of King Henry III of England and Eleanor of Provence. They had six children: Arthur II, Duke of Brittany John de Bretagne, 1st Earl of Richmond Marie de Dreux, wife of Guy III of Châtillon (1268-1339) Pierre, Viscount de Leon (1269-1312) Blanche de Dreux, wife of Philip of Artois (1271-1327) Eleonore, Abbess of Fontevrault (1274-1329) He was killed during the celebrations surrounding the coronation of Pope Clement V in 1305. John was leading the pope's horse through the crowd. So many spectators had piled atop the walls that one of them crumbled and collapsed right on top of the unfortunate duke. -- Jumpp Family, http://www.ancestry.com/community/member/profile.aspx?cba=ajumpp We are told in other sources that the crowning of Pope Clement V took place in Lyons. "Pope Clement V was born Bertrand de Got in 1264 CE at Villandraut in Gascony. He was crowned as Pope in Lyons, about a year after the death of Pope Benedict." -- Medieval Passion, http://www.templarhistory.com/clementv.html

Membership #81119; also Nos. 69271, 71223, 76802, 77630 Lineage Book of Charter Members, Vol 82, p 44 The first obit below announcing her death indicates death occurred on 17 April 1902 ("this morning"), but then the story in the paper of 24 April 1902 says she was buried "yesterday" and speaks of the funeral service as though it was the same day. The first story announced that the funeral would be "Tuesday." Tuesday was the 22nd of April. The memorial on find a Grave adds to the confusion by reporting the date of death as 8 April, while the gravestone caps it off by reporting she died on 7 April, not 17 April. ------------------------- Sallie J Broaddus Houston Birth Nov 15, 1854 Texas, USA Death Apr 8, 1902 Gonzales, Gonzales County, Texas, USA Obit Gonzales Inquirer Apr. 17, 1902 Mrs. S. J. Houston Dead Mrs. S. J. Houston died this morning at 9:30 o'clock at her home in this city. For several days her life has been in the balance and there was little hopes of her recovery. Everything that medical skill could do and the closest attenion from physicians, relatives and friends were expected in her behalf. At her death she was surrounded by her children and relatives. Mrs. Houston was the eldest child of Mrs. W.D. W. Peck, of this city, and relict of R. A. Houston, one of the prominent stockmen of this part of the state up to his death. Her death will be a severe loss in the city. She was a generous, noble Christian woman. For years she has been one of the leading spirits in the Christian church and she never wearied in working for her church and its interest, and was an active worker in all Christian work regardless of denominational lines. She was generous and charitable and no appeal went unheeded. She was a devoted wife and a most loving mother. Especially will her loss be a severe one to her children. She was a tie that bound then together in bonds of love and family relations. She leaves three sons and four daughters, all but two grown to man or womanhood. Socially Mrs. Houston was open-hearted and jovial and her home open at all times to her friends for their pleasure or comfort. Gonzalians will regret honestly and sincerely the death of Mrs. Houston, not only because they liked and respected her, but also because she filled a place in the community that will be a serious loss. The funeral services will be held at the residence Tuesday evening at. 5 o'clock, after which the remains will be interred in the Public cemetery.Mrs. Houston was 47, years, 4 months and 23 days of age. Obit Gonzales Inquirer Apr. 24, 1902 Laid To Rest The remains of Mrs. S. J. Houston were laid to rest yesterday evening at 6 o'clock in the Public cemetery. The funeral services were very impressive and were participated in by Rev. Mr. Cramer, of Lockhart, Rev. A. J. Harris, of San Antonio, and Rev. Mr. Stockhard, of this place. The tributes to the memory of Mrs. Houston by Reverands Cramer and Harris were beautiful in sentiment, expression and thought as to the Christian character, love and useful life of Mrs. Houston. Especially beautiful was the tribute of Mr. Harris to Mrs. Houston, his foster mother in boyhood. The remains were followed to the grave by a large concourse of citizens and the floral offerings were beautiful and exquisite.
