In his household is reported 2 males over 16, 1 female (not age grouped) and 2 slaves, for a total of 6 household members. His son James W Christain is reported born in 1790, so he is probably the 1 male under age 16 in Drury's household. Betsey was the daughter of Reese (often spelled Reace, Rece, etc.) Brewer and Sally (maiden name unknown). Our line descends from Reese and Sally's son Sterling Brewer. We had long suspected that Sterling's father was Reese, but I didn't know that for sure until today, when I finally found his Will in Dickson County, Tennessee. The Will can be found in my Gallery for Reese Brewer. In the Will, you can see that Reese leaves one dollar to his son-in-law D Christian. I have found a marriage record for Drury Christian and Betsey Brewer in Warren County, North Carolina, which is where Reese and his family lived for several years. The bondsman for her wedding was Allen Brewer, who I know from another record was a son of Reese Brewer. I believe Betsey had likely died before 1806, since Reese leaves property to another living daughter, Jean Thomas, and lists her by name, rather than his "Thomas" son-in-law. Reese likely descends from John Brewer who died around 1780 in Hertford County, North Carolina. -- Erik Christensen, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 8 May 2020 ---------------- William Christian Spouse Tabitha House Marriage Bond Made 8 July 1794 in Warren County, North Carolina, USA In the 1820 census, Drury was enumerated in Dickson County, Tennessee. "Drury (or Drewry) Christian, whose birth date ranges between 1750 and 1793 in various trees, but the best support is for the way you have it, namely about 1760. He had three wives that we know of, Mornin (or Mourning) Christian, daughter of Charles Hunt Christian and Mary Leake; Frances Elizabeth Oglesby, whom for the moment we have no choice but to accept as mother of Cenas, Pyrene, and Sally; and Frances Connally. Only for Mornin Christian do we have actual Virginia marriage records, one each for 4 Mar 1784 and 4 Mar 1785. After the last child was born of this marriage, in 1799, there was a jump until 1808, when Cenas and Pyrene were born, followed by Sarah Frances "Sally" in 1811. Unless all the trees that list Frances Elizabeth Oglesby as their mother is wrong (I have found no actual marriage record, [Frances Oglesby is the mother of these three daughters].)" -- James Jones, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 11 January 2018 ----------------------- Two index records on Ancestry.com report the marriage or a Morning Christian to a Drury Christian in Amherst County, Virginia. No copy of the actual record has been found. These, however, have the date as 14 March, and the year is 1784. Being index listings, one is given in each name. These also have the advantage of specifying a county in Virginia. Amherst County matches other information about this Drury Christan. Virginia, Compiled Marriages, 1660-1800 Drury Christian Mornin Christian Marriage 14 Mar 1784 Amherst County, Virginia Virginia, Compiled Marriages, 1660-1800 Mornin Christian Drury Christian Marriage 14 Mar 1784 Amherst County, Virginia A third record collection, matches this except the reported year in this index record is 1785 rather than 1784. This record also reports Drury's father as Robert Christian, while other reconstructions of our Drury Christian's family indicate that Drury's father was John T Christian. This may indicate that Morning/Mornin/Mourning Christan married s different, but related, Drury Christian that the one who married Elizabeth Oglesby. The exact date of the marriage one year later, however, is very suspicious. Virginia, Select Marriages, 1785-1940 Drury Christian Marriage 14 Mar 1785 Amherst County, Virginia Father Robert Christian Spouse Mornin Christian One index record, however, does report a Drury Christian born about 1750, rather than about 1760, as we find for most sources on our Drury Christian, husband of Elizabeth Oglesby and Frances (Fanny) Connally. (See note with transcription below.) Some genealogies also report the father of our Drury Christian, husband of Elizabeth Oglesby and Frances Connally, as Robert Thomas Connally, matching this marriage record of Drury and Morning Christian. Other Christian descendants and researchers, such as James Jones, report that his father was Capt John B Christian (1745-1805), and that his father was Robert Thomas Christian. The birth date generally given for Capt John Christian, however, and as reported in the Jones genealogy, is 5 January 1745 in Amherst, Amherst, Virginia. The place matches the same clan of Christians, and Captain John's death is reported as Death 2 February 1805 in Franklin County, Georgia, which also fits. A problem, though, is that the birth date of Drury Christian, while it varies from 1750 to 1793 in genealogies. Such variance in dates is no doubt due to the confused of the large number of individuals named Drury in some trees, Taking the date we have settled on for Drury as 1760, that means Captain was that John would have been only 15 years old when Drury was born. If you put Drury's birth much later, it creates multiple conflicts with records for his known children. Some other documentation exists in the simple name Drury Christian exists, but it is difficult to relate to the other more definite records or to interpret for identification. No further documentation has been found for this marriage or any children from their union. Likewise, no death date has been found for Mornin/Morning/Mourning Christian. No genealogy listing her has any information. James informed me on 14 January 2018 that in light of our collaborative research on her and this family over the last several days, he had decided to drop Mornin as a wife, given the almost nil documentation and uncertainty of her identity. On possible solution is that the Drury Christian who married Mornin Christian (also a member of this same clan, so a cousin of some degree), was a cousin also of our Drury. This would require accommodation of his other two known marriages and children's births to allow a later birth date that might fit with a birth of Captain John in 1745. So much more fun yet to come i, or mystery to retain! At this pint (22 January 2018, I see no clear way to determine which Drury is which. The quest continues. ---------------------- Drury's will (see below) mentions four daughters and three sons. It would appear from what we know that the three sons, named Drury B, Thomas C and John A, were the sons of Drury's wife Frances Elizabeth Oglesby, as were the three older daughters Pyrene, Cenas (both born in 1808) and Sarah (Sallie, born 1811). These sons are already of majority age at the time of the will, March 1825. No birth records have been found for the three sons. A fourth daughter named Mary was named a s a minor child in Drury's will, as appears to be the daughter of Frances Connally, who survived Drury when he died in 1825. Info and records on this family are incomplete and inconsistent. But the picture is beginning to fill out and the understanding of this family is expanding. The thing is, there are several individuals named Drury.Christian. And records are sparse or vague. Mourning Christian may fit as a related cousin (a common form of marriage in the old days in the eastern colonies and states) whom this or another Drury Christian married, but she is at this point a shadowy figure. The following record is attached to Drury Christian, reporting his birth in 1750, even though the genealogies report the birth date as 1760. American Genealogical-Biographical Index (AGBI) Drury Christian Birth 1750 Virginia Volume 28, Page #383 Heads of Fams. at the first U.S. census. Va By U.S. Bureau of the Census. Washington, 1908. (189p.): 48 Drury's probate documents mention his wife several times as Frances Christian. Frances married James Ramsay about 4 years after Drury's death, in 1829. Drury's will names his heirs and executors. No other documentation has been found on these three sons. It will be assumed that, lacking any other information, these, like the older daughters, are the children of Frances Elizabeth Oglesby. It appears they had four children and then maybe she passed between 1892 and 1898 when he remarried." -- Lynda Soape Lewis, Find a Grave Message to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 2 March 2020 1900 Federal Census, Bowie County, Texas, 1 June, Precinct 4, District 12, page 1A, Hse/Fam #2 Forsyth, Jason A Head W M Jun 1860 39 Married 2 yrs TX MO TN Farmer Owns Forsyth, Lavonia Wife W F F[eb?] 1882 18 Married 2 yrs 0 children/0 living TX Unknown TX Forsyth, Thomas Son W M Sep 1881 18 Single TX TX TX Farm Laborer Forsyth, John Son W M May 1883 17 Single TX TX TX Farm Laborer Forsyth, Lenard Son W M Jan 1887 13 Single TX TX TX Farm Laborer Forsyth, Ella Dau W F Jan 1892 8 Single TX TX TX In the 1910 census, Jason's wife's name is Amanda, which was a name of Emily Christian. The census reports that this is Jason's second marriage. This conflicts with the idea that Emily Christian was his first wife and Lavonia was the second. This and some other discrepancies seems to support the idea that Emily Christian and Amanda Christian are two different persons. The record of Jason and Emily's marriage in 1880 matches the ages of children reported in the 1900 census, when Livonia is Jason's wife. It appears Emily Christian died about 1897 or 1898, since Jason married Livonia Reed in 1898. Family genealogies have conflated Emily Christian with Jason's third wife Amanda (Mandy) White, so in many genealogies she appears as the single person Amanda Emily Christian. Unfortunately, even Amanda White Forsyth's burial memorial on Find a Grave has her name as Amandy Emily Christian Forsyth. The stone has Amandy E Forsyth. This would be for Amanda Elizabeth Forsuth. No dates of birth or death are given on the stone. A new cycle of research to clarify this family confirmed the earlier indications that Jason Forsyth had three wives, and provided extensively more records for the whole extended family. Emily Christian was the first, but died early, after bearing the four children found in many records for the Forsyth family. Lavonia died after only about four years and the 1910 census reports Jason Forsyth's wife as Amanda (White), the former widow of Frank M Moore (despite the 1910 report that this is Amanda's first marriage). The census says they have been married 8 years. 1910 Federal Census, Bowie County, Texas, 18 April, Precinct 4, District 19, page 2A, Hse/Fam #23 Forsyth, Jason A Head M W 49 Marriage 2 Married 8 years TX TN TN Farmer Owns Forsyth, Amanda Wife F W 40 Marriage 1 Married 8 years children not rptd AR TN AR [born abt 1870] Moore, Audrey Stepdau 16 Single TX AR TX Moore, Ola Stepdau M W 14 TX AR TX Forsyth, Leonard Son M W 23 TX TX TX Another researcher enquires concerning these anomalies and uncertainties. Jason and Amanda (Mandy) were still together in the 1920 census above, and in the 1930 census above and the 1940 census below, Amanda was reported as a widow. We do find that in that era, some women reported themselves as widows instead of divorced, due to social stigma. After 1940, the only further information found for this Amanda is her burial record, with a memorial on Find a Grave which supplies her birth and death dates, which do not appear on her simple gravestone. 1940 Federal Census, Bowie County, Texas, 24 April, Justice Precinct 7, District 19-37, page 15B, Hse #268, Owns $400 Forsyth, Amanda Head F W 72 Widow Grade 6 b Ark same house in 1935 Goodman, Ora Dau F W 17 Widow Grade H-2 b Texas same house in 1935 Goodman, Austin Grandson M W 21 Single Grade H-2 b Texas same house in 1935 The simple footstone has only her name, as Amandy E Forsyth. The memorial adds her maiden name as Christian, which is supported by parts of the scenario we find. It does not clarify the anomaly of the 1880 marriage of Jason Forsyth to Emily Christian, followed by apparently the same persona as Jason A Forsyth married to a Lavonia, born only about 1882 according to the 1900 census. The eerie similarity of the wife's name 1910 and 1920 censuses to the wife of the 1880 marriage adds another dimension to the mystery, especially since the census ages do not match a birth suitable for the Emily Christian of the 1880 marriage record. Bartlett was recorded as age 5 in 1860 (Calhoun Mississippi), but age 11 in 1870 (Titus County, Texas)! The same occurred with his uncle (if a young brother of stepmother Polly/Mary Waldon Christian) who is likewise 5 years old in 1860 but 11 in 1870! Because of this discrepancy I do not know from these two census whether the birth year was 1855 (1860 census) or 1859 (1870 census). The 1880 census splits the difference at age 23, making birth about 1857. A similar discrepancy occurs with Polly's son Henry, reported as 5 years old in 1870 but 13 in 1880. It seems a family could not make a mistake of mistaking a 1-year old for a 5-year-old! This leads me to favor the older birth, even though ages reported in later censuses are more consistent with the later birth. The 1880 age is likely more accurate. This could be a repeated error that developed from an earlier "decision" about the age to report for Bart. This happens a lot in the censuses of this era. 1860 Federal Census, Calhoun County, Mississippi, 25 September, Cherry Hill, page 163, Hse #1140, Fam #1156 Peter Christian 45 M Farmer England Mary [Waldon] Christian 25 F Ala Bartey Christian M 5 Miss [mis-write for Bartley?] [b abt 1855] 1870 Federal Census, Titus County, Texas 6 August, Mt Pleasant, page 161, Hse/Fam #1120 Peter Christian 56 M W Farmer England Bartey (mis-write for Bartley?] Christian 11 M W Mississippi [b abt 1859] In 1880, there is another Christian family 2 houses down from Bart. A Gain (Zene) P Christian is the same age as Bart, 23. His characteristics are close to those for Daniel in other reports. Both he and Bart were born in Mississippi. The father of both was born in England, which makes it seem that both Gain and Bart are sons of Peter. The mother of Bart was born in Mississippi, and the mother of Gain [Zene] in Alabama, which would match Polly, his step-mother. The mother's birthplace is reported as Alabama in other censuses for William. But there is no child in 1860 that would match Gain's age. Consistent with these lively age variations, between the 1860 and 1870 censuses, there is only a 4-year difference in the age reported for Daniel, from 8 to 12! And it appears on final analysis that Daniel and Bartlett were born only one year apart, as recorded in 1870: Daniel age 11 and Daniel age 12. "Gain" is likely a mis-write for Zene. This would not explain the initial P in Gain P. Are these anomalies just a series of enumerator errors, like we often find? In 1880 Bart is married and maintaining his own household on a farm in Cass County, Texas, near brothers Zene and Willie. 1880 Census, Cass County, Texas, 10 July, Precinct 3, page 59, Hse/Fam #559 Christian, Bart W M 23 Farmer MS England MS [b abt 1857] Christian, Francis [Frances?] W F 18 Wife Keeps House SC SC SC Christian, Samuel W M 3 months, born in Feb 1880 (census date was June) Son TX MS SC Christian, Peter W M 9 Brother TX England MS It appears the latter is a brother born to William Peter and Polly after Henry. I had missed this child in earlier summary checks on the census, and found him only when going through the family units in detail to enter the census detail for each family. At age 9 in the June census report, he has had his 9th birthday in the first 6 months of 1880. This means he would have been born no later than September 1870. This also indicates that both their parents have died before the 1880 census. Brothers Henry and Peter are living with married brothers. We have a date of death for William Peter, but lacked one up to this point for Polly. I can say that Polly died at some time between September 1870 and 1871. Peter married Elizabeth Long about 1872. 1900 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 9 June, Precinct 3, District 22, page 8B, Hse/Fam #135 Christian, George D [should be B for Bartley] Head W M July 1853 46 Married 22 years MS England Ala Farmer Owns Christian, Mary Wife W F Apr 1863 37 Married 22 yrs 9 children/8 living GA GA GA Christian, Howard Son W M Mch 1880 20 Single Farm Laborer TX MS GA Christian, Clyde Son W M Dec 1886 13 Single Farm Laborer TX MS GA Christian, Carl Son W M Oct 1888 11 At School TX MS GA Christian, Thomas Son W M Oct 1890 9 TX MS GA Christian, Reuben Son W M Sept 1892 7 TX MS GA Christian, Siver [Sybil] Dau W F May 1895 5 Single TX MS GA Christian, John Son W M June 1899 1 Single TX MS GA The child reported as "Siver" is reported in the 1910 census as Sybil. Also reported in 1910 is Ruby, who appears in all the genealogies, where Sybil is missing from those I have seen. Ruby is reported as Ruby Lee in the genealogies. He age of 17 in 1910 indicates she was born about 1893. "Siver" was reported born in May 1895 and 5 years old. But in 1910 Sybil is reported as age 13, which would make birth about 1897 or 12896. Not too far off for even year age reports. The phonetic similarity of Siver and Sybil indicate that Sybil is the daughter being reported in the 1900 census. Ruby continues showing up as Ruby Watson in 1920 and 1930, when her mother and most siblings are also in the Phoenix area. In 1930 Mary Frances is in Ruby Watson's household. It seems clear that Ruby was simply left out in the enumerator's entries in the 1900 census. "Siver" was Sybil as properly named in the 1910 census. George Bartley died in 1904.
