Because of the presence of Susan Dyse in the household, I tend to think that Susan is Jacksobena's mother. But I can find nothing on anyone with this surname, or with similar names like Dyess that would match these individuals. One genealogy suggests the family name was Dyer, and has the names of her parents. But there is no documentaiton. The name Dyer woudl make sense as an analysis of the handwriting of the Susan's last name in the census, which could be Dyre. This genealogy has Jacksobena's first name as Jaqueline, which would make sense, and acount for the strange 1860 form of Jackoline. But both these are quite different from the clear entry of the strange form Jacksobena in two censuses. It seems unlikley the latter could have been accidentally written so carefully two different times 20 years apart. "It seems very likely that the obliterated graveyard in the field near the Nowell residence is that of Robert H. Dyer and members of his family. Colonel Dyer, for whom Dyer County, Tennessee is named, an outstanding soldier in the War of 1812, died in Madison County on May 11, 1826." -- Jackson Gazette, May 13, 1826, Jonathan K. T. Smith, Copyright, Jonathan K. T. Smith, 1996, "A Genealogical Miscellany II, Madison County, Tennessee" His obituary in the Jackson, Madison County, Tennessee Gazette, reports his death at his home in Madison County, north of Jackson, adjoining his land in Dyer County. "Departed this, life, on Thursday the 11th instant at his residence in this county, after a short illness Col. Robert H. Dyer, a distinguished hero in the service of his country, under General Jackson, during the late war. Few men commanded more respect and esteem of a extensive acquaintance in private life, and none ever deserved better of his country as a soldier. He served in all memorable campaigns under General Jackson, down to the termination of hostilities at the celebrated Battle of New Orleans. He was a brave, intrepid and efficient as an officer, always at his post, and ever foremost in battle, paved the way to victory. The memory of such a man deserves more than a passing notice. We shall be pleased hereafter to obtain and present to our readers, a biographical sketch of our much lamented and departed friend. A numerous family deplores his loss. His remains were interred at his late residence, on yesterday with military honors." -- Jackson Gazette, May 13, 1826, cited in Ancestry Story, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/25258414/person/1644568447/mediax/2?pgnum=1&pg=0&pgpl=pid%7CpgNum&ftm=1

The first evidence of this man's surname (besides some genealogies that give Harriett's name with no documentation) is in the census of 1900 in the name of his two daughters. In 1900 Harriett and her sister Pearl are reported as stepchildren in the home of widow Emma Hicks, with Emma's two Hicks children. To account for the relationships and ages, with the last names reported, Emma's recently deceased husband was Mr Ealand the two girls' father by Mr Ealand's first wife. It would appear he died, and Emma married Mr Hicks, then he died after July 1899, when the last child Florence was reported born. In what appears to be an enumerator error, Harriett E is reported as a Son and Male, even though she matches Harriett Fowler in 1910, the wife of Charles B Fowler, whose sister Pearl is int he same household married to Charlie's brother. Some additional troublesome discrepancies, the Ealand girls' father is reported as born in Texas, while the Hicks children's father is reported as born in England. An interesting highlight appears in the 1910 census, where we see that both Harriet's and Pearl's father is also reported as born in England. This would not match the different last names but might indicate some other close relationship among the families. If this all was not so much fun, one might get frustrated and discouraged! 1900 Federal Census, Bexar County, Texas, 15 June, San Antonio, District 104, page 19B, 230 Magnolia St, Hse #386, Fam #449 Hicks, Emma Head W F Dec 1869 30 Widow 2 children/2 living TX Germany Germany No Occup Owns Hicks, Georgie Son W M Nov 1896 3 TX England TX Hicks, Florence Dau W F July 1899 10mos Single TX England TX Hesser, Christine Sister W F July 1887 14 Single TX Germany Germany At School Ealand, Pearl W F Oct 1889 10 TX TX TX At School Ealand, Harriett E Son [sic] W M sic Dec 1890 9 TX TX TX At School I found an entry that appears to be for him under the name of Arthur Ealand, in San Antonio's City Directory for 1892. He is the only Ealand in the book. U.S. City Directories, 1821-1989 San Antonio, Texas, City Directory, 1892, p 273 Ealand Arthur r 220 Warren A couple of genealogies report that Harriet and Perl's father lived until 1930. that Arthur Ealand is buried in the Gause, Texas, cemetery and details are memorialized in a Find a Grave memorial. The family situation is a little complicated in 1900. Harriett and her sister Pearl are reported as stepchildren in the home of widow Emma Hicks, with Emma's two Hicks children. It would seem that Emma's recently deceased husband was Mr Ealand the two girls' father. If the step relationships reported are correct, in order to account for the names, the two girls would need to be the daughters of Mr Ealand's first wife. The ages of the two Hicks children would allow for that. The father of the Hicks children, than, was a second husband of Emma after the death of Mr Ealand. An additional complication is that Harriett E is reported as a Son and Male, even with the name Harriet. But this Harriett matches Harriett Fowler in 1910, the wife of Charles B Fowler. This seems further confirmed when we find that in the same household are Charlie's brother Webster and his wife Pearl, who matches Harriett's sister Pearl Ealand in the 1900 census. Now for the next layer of forensic investigation, note that the Ealand girls' father is reported as born in Texas, while the Hicks children's father is reported as born in England. An interesting highlight appears in the 1910 census, where we see that both Harriet's and Pearl's father is also reported as born in England. This might indicate a further background relationship between the families Hicks and Ealand, but just what is undetermined at this stage. What fun these censuses are! 1900 Federal Census, Bexar County, Texas, 15 June, San Antonio, District 104, page 19B, 230 Magnolia St, Hse #386, Fam #449 Hicks, Emma Head W F Dec 1869 30 Widow 2 children/2 living TX Germany Germany No Occup Owns Hicks, Georgie Son W M Nov 1896 3 TX England TX Hicks, Florence Dau W F July 1899 10mos Single TX England TX Hesser, Christine Sister W F July 1887 14 Single TX Germany Germany At School Ealand, Pearl W F Oct 1889 10 TX TX TX At School Ealand, Harriett E Son [sic] W M {sic} Dec 1890 9 TX TX TX At School That complicated theory acounting forf the dates and names we know here sounds good, but I found some genealogies (undocuemnted, of course, that have late dates of death for both Harriet's parents. And no second wife for her father, or anything to calrify how Anna Hicks could be Harriet and Pearl could be the stepdaughters of Anna Hicks. These facts remain unaccounted for in the couple of genealogies I have seen. The details in name, date and place for their father and other information lends credibility to their information. The Js and Is are hard to distinguish on this page. Ancestry.com transcribes the head of this household as Thomas J Green, but one of the sons as Thomas I. Note that the child matching John M of 1850 in the 1860 census is called John W. In 1870, the son is clearly Thomas J, but the father does not have an initial. Genealogies which report this family have both with the middle initial J. Nancy's middle initial is also J. The 1860 census has Nancy's second middle initial of R. This may be an error too. 1870 Federal Census, Van Zandt County, Texas, 23 August, Justice Precinct 3, PO Canton, page 69, Hse #492, Fam #545 Tho [sic] Green 47 M W Farmer $1000 Real Estate $1000 Personal b Tennessee Nancy Green 37 F W Keeping House b Mississippi Cannot read or write Joseph Green 17 M W b Texas Cannot write Daniel Green 15 M W b Texas Cannot write Mary F Green 13 F W b Texas Bethel Green 11 M W b Texas Cannot read or write Thos J Green 9 M W b Texas I found an Easley family living next door to her and Thomas in the 1850 census. From the ages, it appears that was her brother and his family. I have not tried to reconstruct this Easley family, which are somewhat distant from the lineages this genealogy follows. Some genealogies have Nancy's death information as 2 Nov 1879 in Sabine County, Texas, but no source documentation is provided. In 1860 and 1870 they had been in Van Zandt County, to the northwest, before 1860? Van Zandt County is east of Kaufman County, which borders Dallas County. I have trouble accepting this date of death as correct, since Tom remarried in 1871. His widow S J Green applied in 1909 for a military widow's pension. In her application, S J reported her husband as Thomas James Green. Her husband had served in the Confederate States Cavalry from Texas during the Civil War. S J also reports in her application that she has lived in Upshur County for 53 years. This would be back to about 1856. Upshur County is not very far from Van Zandt County. Hamilton County is several counties southwest of there. So the Hamilton County couple is a different family. The pension application, supported by an affidavit of two witnesses, reports that S J and Thomas were married on 6 February 1871. If this is the correct wife of Thomas at the time of his death, as several genealogies do affirm, it would mean that Nancy Easley Green died before 1871, or perhaps they were divorced. But that was very unusual in that era.

The other is in their former home area of Clarinda, Page County, Iowa, from which they moved to Missouri then Indian Territory. Both memorials have the same date of death. The Iowa marker has no dates. Alvis served the Union under two enlistments in the Civil War, first in the Missouri 14th Regiment for 6 months in 1861. Then he joined the 23rd Iowa Infantry, in September 1862. He served in both cases as staff surgeon. I note that the Iowa memorial reports he died in Iowa. This appears to be part of his military records. This is strange, since his wife Jane and their sons Alvis H Jr, and George died and are buried in Chickasha, Oklahoma. Another son Theophilus H East also lived there for many years before he went to Western areas and Mexico to serve as a doctor his last few years, before passing away in Colorado.
