Notes for R H GLORY

It appeared that R H Glory had died before the census in 1930. Maggie Lee
Green was reprorted wiht the name Maggie Glory, and as Married, but htere was
no husband reported in her ghousehold. In 1940 she was reported as a widow,
so it appeared perhaps her husband R H Glory had just died or was abvout to
die iat the time of the 1930 census.

However, in Jully 2015, a record was found for an R H Glory, with no wife
reported, in the Fresno City Directory for 1932. This indicates he lived at
least till 1932, and since no wife is reported, he was likely divorced. It is
known that is other cases, a divorced wife in that era might report therself
as a widow in order to avoid questinos and the negative connotatoin of having
a divorce. That may be what happened with Maggie Green Glory in the 1940
census.

On the same two-page spread of the directory is also an entry for a P Green,
matching Maggie's brother-in-law Pink Green, with a matching address on Route
7, the neighboring box. This matches the picture of their living situation
that we get from from details in previous censuses and mention of some land
purchase or rental deals of Pink with R H Glory. But I do not find a
correspnding entry for Maggie under the name either Glory or Green. RH's
entry is the only one under the surname of Glory.

We might check the directory for the name Schuchard, which has come to light
as a marriage of Maggie at some point. Dates have not been recovered or the
timeline reconstructed. Nope ... nothing in this directory under the name
Schuchard. Further then similar entries for R H Glory were found in the 1933
and 1934 city directories. The address appears to mean Rural Route 7, Box
219, which fits their earlier living situation,

U.S. City Directories, 1821-1989
Fresno, California, City Directory, 1932, p 734-735
Glory R H rt 7 Bx 219 (p 734)
Green P rt 7 Bx 218 (p 735)

In the 1933 diirectory R H is at a different address, but stil on a rural
route in the county. Again his is the only entry for the surname Glory. This
entry is very interesting but puzzling in a differtent way. There are two
similar entries now for a Green P and Green Pink. The entry for Green P has
the address Rt 9 Box 221a, which is a couple opf houses away form either of
the 1932 entries. Then Green Pink is at the very same address as R H Glory,
Rt 9 Box 433a. This makes us less certain who the Glory entry might represent
and who P Green is in contrast to Pink Green.

U.S. City Directories, 1821-1989

Glory R H rt 9 Bx 433a
Green P rt 7 Bx 221a (p 754)
Green Pink rt 9 Bx 433a (p 754)

In the 1934 entry, R H Glory and Pink Green are again at the same address as
in 1933. There4 is no entry this time for P Green.

Willie Gocha's father died sometime before 1835, going by the 1935 census
record of his Willie and his mother Jewel. Jewel (Julia in the 1940 census)
had married again since her first husband's death and is enumerated as the
wife of Lester Jenkins in the Ethel community of Arkansas County, Arkansas.
Willie is reported as born in Arkansas. The report that all three lived in
the "same place in 1835" seems to indicate that Lester and Jewel married
before 1935. I have found no record of Jewel's first husband, but assume he
died.

Notes for Louis GOCIO

The name found in many records as Gocio is the French name originally spelled
Gossiau, which also shows up in various records.

In the 1860 census, Louis was reported as a widower. His 7-year-old daughter
Alma Anna is in his hosuehold.

In 1870, he and Anna are still together in the household, with two unrelated
persons also listed.

1870 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 13 June, Old River Township, P

Frazier, Elizabeth 25 F W Keeping House born Arkansas Cannot Read or Write [b

Davis, James 4 M W born Arkansas [b abt 1866]

Louis wrote his will about a year before he died. On 13 August 1870 he wrote
a two-page will covering the following provisions.

Will of Louis Gocio
Arkansas County, Arkansas
13 August 1870
Bequeaths $1.00 each to children of first wife Amilea [Amelia] Gocio:
Severine Cannon, Belina Stythe, William R Gocio, James L Gocio, John Gocio
Bequeaths to minor daughter Alma Anne Gocio all his real estate & some items
of furniture
Bequeaths to son John Gocio all items of property not specifically given to
Alma Anna
Executors Henry Young & sons William R & James L Gocio
Witnesses John Whitaker & J L Johnson

The will's reference to Louis' first wife as Amelia may indicate he married
two women named Amelia. Alternatively, it may mean that the Amelia reported
as his wife in the 1850 census was that first wife, and not Amelia Brinsback
Pinot, as it appears to us.

Considerations:
The details of Louiis' 1850 census record matches Amelia Brinsback Pinot, and
no other record for 1850 or later appears in the name of Amelia Pinot until
her burial in St Peter's Cemetery in New Gascony, Old Bogy Township, Jefferson
County, Arkansas, the next township west of Old River (Arkansas Post) in
Arkansas County. Dates on the burial of Amelia Gocio in the same cemetery
report she died in 1858, while a separate entry under the name Amelia Pinot
has no dates. It could very well be that these are two entries for the same
person under each of her married names. No death records have been found for
any of these, other than the dates given for most of them in the St Peters
burials.

Notes for Newton R GOGGANS

Newton R. Goggans
Birth: Feb. 8, 1856
Death: Sep. 13, 1943
Husband of Martha Elvira ISRAEL
Son of Andrew Jackson Goggans and Marcella GOLDEN
Memories of a descendant:
Grandpa (Newton R.) came to live with Minnie's family in the early 30's. He
went back to Maud's in Nocona some. Ft. Washita is a museum now. It's 18 miles
from Durant, OK. There is a cabin on the grounds at Ft. Washita. Mother said,
as we visited Ft. Washita, that her dad, Maud and Willie lived in this cabin
after she married. Maud married Jack York and he is buried on the grounds
there at Ft. Washita.
He was very dependent on Minnie. She seemed fond of him as he did her. We
lived on a farm at Mead, OK. Mother cooked on a wood-burning cook stove and
washed on a rub board.
His health was fairly good. He sat on the porch by the hour as we lived on the
highway. Living with an active family probably wasn't easy. We were active in
church, school and community but he didn't go much nor do I remember him
helping any with garden or farm chores. After the old age pension started he
went into Durant and lived in a home there - a short time, but Minnie still
cared for his needs.
As his health deteriorated he came back to our house to live and was bed-fast.
Maud came from Nocona at the time to help care for him. He died Sept. 1943 and
was buried at Ravia beside Martha Elvira.
Newton Ruben Goggans was born in Georgia around 1857. He and Martha Elvira had
five children: Arthur who died at a young age, Mary Ethel Goggans WHITE,
Minnie Lee Goggans BALLINGER, Maud Goggans YORK, and Willie.

West Virginia, Deaths Index, 1853-1973
Caroline F. Dandridge
Death 1854 Norborne Parish, Berkeley, West Virginia [Virginia at the time]
Burial Date 25 Mar 1854, Death Age 34
Marital Status: Married
Spouse Name: P.P. Dandridge

Note that the place oif death is reported as Norborne Parish, Berkeley, West
Virginia. Berkely was the original county from which came the cuirrent three
counties of Morgan, Berkely and Jefferson.

In contrast, I have found that most genealogies report her death in Jefferson,
Alexandria County, Virginia. I found that Jefferson is in Fairfax County,
Virginia. Both these counties were in existence long before her birth and
death. So I cannot explain why they report Jefferson as being in Alexandria
County. But her death record reports she was in Western Virginia (now West
Virginia), not in the east near DC, when she died.

This seems to be due to a confusion of Jefferson County, Virginia (now West
Virginia), with the town of Jefferson in Fairfax County, near Alexandria
County. The 1850 census reports Philip and Caroline in Jefferson County,
Virginia. This is in the section of Virginia that became West Virginia during
the Civil War, just below the western edge of Maryland.

Caroline's christening record reports that she was christened in Norborne
Parish. This christening recored is in the records of modern Berkeley County,
West Virginia, whose county seat is Martinsburg. And the place of christening
is reporteed as Noirborne Parish, Berkely County, West Virgnia. Howevr
information on the three counties in that area of West Virgnina refer to the
Norborne Parish Church (now called St George's Chapel) as located in Jefferson
County. The reconfiguration over the years led to subdividing of the original
Anglican (Episcopal) parish and the counties of the region.

"The Washington Heritage Trail speaks the history of the three counties:
Jefferson County, Berkeley County and Morgan County. ... If one visits
Jefferson County, the visitors will be thrilled to see Harpers Ferry National
Historical Park, the Shenandoah Canal, the Morgan’s Grove Park that existed
since 1775, the St. George’s Chapel, which was formerly known as Norborne
Parish Church, and the Middle Historic District. For overnight stay, the
Entler Hotel, which was said as a drill area for troops preparing for war, is
accessible."

The original area was Berkely County, which was later subdivided with the
creation of Jefferson and Morgan Counties.

"The county was created by an act of the House of Burgesses in February 1772
from the northern third of Frederick County (Virginia). At the time of the
county's formation it also consisted of the areas that make up the present-day
Jefferson and Morgan counties. Most historians believe that the county was
named for Norborne Berkeley, Baron de Botetourt (1718-1770), Colonial Governor
of Virginia from 1768 to 1770. West Virginia's Blue Book, for example,
indicates that Berkeley County was named in his honor. ... On January 8, 1801,
Jefferson County was formed out of the county's eastern section. Then, on
February 9, 1820, Morgan County was formed out of the county's western section
and parts of Hampshire County."

Notes for Frederick GOOCH

"She and Jesse had an infant son named Garvin who died before his first
birthday. No source for this other than Fannie's recollections as she referred
to him as Baby Garvin. He was never forgotten. Next child was Frederick (Fred}
Gooch born April 25, 1908. Next and last child was Vivian Gooch (My Mother),
born April 19, 1910-Died Oct 3, 1999 in Conroe, Texas."
-- Venita Muczynski, genealogy comment to Orville Boyd Jenkins on
Ancestry.com, 29 Dec 2012

The 1910 census reports an age requiring a birth date almost a year later than
that reported by Venita and other family sources.

Other family sources also report the 1908 birth date. It seems odd that his
parents would have reported him a year younger than he was. It could be
enumerator error entry.
