In the case of Goose Creek, it was named for a nearby stream, a boat landing five miles from the nearest rail connection In 1915, following the discovery of oil in the area, another community developed, called Old Town. That same year, an explosion destroyed Old Town and the residents moved further inland and renamed the community Newtown. There were several attempts to merge the adjoining âwild cat oil drillingâ communities of Baytown, Goose Creek, and Pelly. It was not until 1948 that the tri-cities were consolidated into what is now known as Baytown. -- "Goose Creek, TX," Texas Escapes, http://www.texasescapes.com/TexasGulfCoastTowns/Goose-Creek-Texas.htm -------------------- Texas Deaths, 1890 - 1976 Certificate #26933 Willie Elzie Thomas, married Occupation Refinery Worker Father Peter Thomas born Germany Mother Lucy Hood born Texas Age at Death 48 years 1 month 12 days Born 25 Apr 1894 Bryan (Brazos Co), Texas Died 07 June 1942 at residence 1106 S Goose Creek St, Pelly, Harris County Cause of Death Carcinoma of Face Informant Mrs W E Thomas Buried 9 July 1942 Hill of Rest Cemetery, Goose Creek (Harris County), Texas Social Security #461-07-1442 -- Family Search, http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#toYear=1942;placeId=1284523;surname=Thomas;searchType=standard;givenName=Willie;eventPlace=Pelly%2C%20Harris%2C%20Texas%2C%20United%20States;year=1894;p=recordResults -------------------- William Elzie "Willie" Thomas Birth Apr. 25, 1894 Texas Death Jun. 7, 1942 Pelly [sicne 1948 part of Paytown], Harris County, Texas Parents: Peter Thomas (1848 - 1900) Lucy J. Mary Frances was the second wife of Edward Harman, whom she married in 1868, about 10 years after the death of his first wife Nancy Graves. In 1870 they aer enumerated in Milam County, texas, with their new son John T and Edward's son from his first marriage to Nancy Graves, Benjamin. Edward Haynes also fits the pattern of another son of Nancy Graves and Edward Harman, though the surname given is Haynes, but I have not yet been able to account for him. 1870 Federal Census, Milam County, Texas, 18 July, PO Maysfield, page 93 (scan p 257), Hse #667, Fam # 671 Harman, Edward 45 M W Farming $500 Real estate $500 personal b Tennessee Harman, Mary 32 F W Keeping House b Alabama Harman, Benjamin 15 M W b Texas Haynes (?), Edward 13 M W b Texas Haynes (?Harman), John 1 M W b Texas The assignment of the name Haynes from the Edward Haynes listed above John appears to be an enumerator error. In all the censuses of Claude's family the enumerator reports everyone as White. All previous censuses and Indian registrations show Robert and his family registered with their mother first as Choctaw, then as Chickasaw. (Robert's grandmother Fannie Colbert was 1/4 Choctaw and 1/4 Chickasaw.) This Green-Thompson and related name lines from Fannie Colbert generally merged into the general populace, reporting themselves as White, rather than Indian of any tribe. The importance of these listings also became less important as the generations progressed. Many moved west to various locations. 1920 Federal Census, McClain County, Oklahoma, 5 January, Hopping Township, District 78, page 2B, Hse/Fam #37 Thompson, Robert L Head Rents M W 25 OK US US Farmer Thompson, Bessie Wife F W 25 OK TX KY Thompson, Lee Son M W 6 OK OK OK Thompson, Claudie Son M W 3yrs8mos OK OK OK [b Apr 1916] Thompson, Charley Son M W 3 OK OK OK 1930 Federal Census, Logan County, Oklahoma, 2 April, Guthrie, District 11, page 1A, 1213 West Dale St, Hse #9, Fam #10 Thompson, Robert L Head Rents $12 No Radio M W 36 Married at 18 OK TX OK Machinist, Santa Fe Round House Thompson, Nora B Wife F W 34 Married at 16 OK TX TX Thompson, Lee Son M W 15 OK OK OK Thompson, Claud Son M W 13 OK OK OK Thompson, Charles Son M W 11 OK OK OK Thompson, Levita Dau F W 9 OK OK OK 1940 Federal Census, Logan County, Oklahoma, 8 April, Guthrie, District 42-13, Page 7A, Hse #152, Rents $12 Thompson, R L Head M W 45 Single Grade 7 b Okla same place in 1935 Railroad Machinist Helper [b abt 1895] Thompson, Bessie Wife F W 43 Married Grade 7 b Okla same place in 1935 Farm Laborer [b abt 1897] Thompson, Claudia [sic] Son M W 23 Divorced Grade H4 b Okla same place in 1935 Truck Driver, Cabinet Factory [b abt 1917] Thompson, La Veta Dau F W 19 Single Grade H2 b Okla same place in 1935 Hospital Kitchen Helper [b abt 1921] Thompson, June Dau F W 6 Single Grade 0 Okla same place in 1935 [b abt 1934] Note that Claudie is reported as Divorced. Em,ma is reported in 1920 as the wife of Bill A Harris, in McClain County, Oklahoma. Two sons are reported with the last name of Harris, but these are the sons of William Fuzzell, and they are reported with the Fuzzell surname in 1930 and 1940. . Claud the oldest is 6, so he would have been born some time in 1913. Note that Emma and her children are all reported here as White. This is what happened to many families that were of Indian intermarried status. However, note that in the 1930 census Emma and all her children are reported as Indian. But the in 1940 they are White again. 1920 Federal Census, McClain County, Oklahoma, 5 January, Hopping Township, District 78, page 2B, Hse/Fam #31 Harris, Bill A Head Rents M W 23 TX AR GA Brick Layer [b abt 1896] Harris, Emma Wife F W 22 OK TX OK [b abt 1897] Harris, Claud Son M W 6 OK TX OK [b 1913] Harris, DouglasSon M W 4yrs6mos OK TX OK [b abt May 1915] In 1930 Emma and Bill are enumerated in Caddo County, Oklahoma. 1930 Federal Census, Caddo County, Oklahoma, 9 April, North Lathram Township, District 8-45, page 3B, Hse #58, Fam #69 Harris, William A Head Rents No Radio M W 34 Married at age 23 [abt 1919] KS US US [b abt 1896] Harris, Emma A Wife F Indian 32 Married at age 22 [abt 1920] Ind Terr Tex Ind Terr [b abt 1898] Fuzzell, Claud Son M Indian 16 Single Okla AR Ind Terr [b abt June 1914] Fuzzell, Douglas Son M Indian 14 Single Okla AR Ind Terr [b abt June 1916] Harris, William Son M Indian 9 Single OK TX Ind Terr [b abt Nov 1921] Harris, Eileen Dau F Indian 4 Single OK TX Ind Terr [b abt Nov 1926] In 1940 Emma and Bill Harris appear in the census as residents of San Bernardino County, California. William and Emma are reported in one household, and the grown children named Fuzzell and Harris in the next house. The enumerator originally designated the fist two names in the second household as stepsons, indicating they were the sons of Emma Harris. The enumerator (or supervisor) later changed the designation for the first son to Head, but left the other Stepson designation as it was. The Harris children in that household are still designated as son and daughter of William Harris. This confusion and sloppiness of the enumerator is a boon to us, giving us details about Emma's two marriages and children of those unions. 1940 Federal Census, San Bernardino County, California, 9 April, Bloomington, District 36-8, Page 4A, Hse #86, Rents $15 Harris, William Head M W 48 Married Grade 5 b Texas Same place in 1935 Veteran Pensioner [b abt 1892] Harris, Emma Wife F W 42 Married Grade 6 b Oklahoma Same place in 1935 Housewife [b abt 1898] - page 4B, Hse #87, Rents $15 - Fuzzell, Claud Stepson/Head M W 26 Single Grade 8 b Oklahoma Same place in 1935 Orange Grove Laborer [b abt 1914] Fuzzell, Douglas Stepson [of William Harris] M W 24 Single Grade 8 b Oklahoma Same place in 1935 Orange Grove Laborer [b abt 1916] Harris, William Son M W 19 Single Grade H3 b Oklahoma Same place [b abt 1921] Harris, Elean Dau F W 14 Single Grade 7 b Oklahoma Same place in 1935 [b abt 1926] Morrow, Hulon Nephew M W 23 Single Grade 8 b Texas Paducah, Cottle Co TX in 1935 [b abt 1917] Morrow, Mable Niece F W 27 Grade 7 b Okla Paoli, Garvin Co OK in 1935 [b abt 1913] The Fuzzell sons are now reported with the proper surname. Oklahoma public records are not online. According to the census ages of their sons here, Claud was born in about 1913. In 1913, Emma was about 15 or 16 years old. That seems unlikely. Census ages vary widely. But the boys' ages in the 1920 census match. This means Emma married when she was about 14, possible near her 15th birthday. However, she complicates things by reporting in the 1930 census that she first maried at age 22, which would be in 1920, when she was married to her second husband Bill Harris.
