Charity Cherry Morris Gilbert
Birth 1800
Death 1854
From: Barbara Elliott, (I am a direct descendant of Charity and Mable Gilbert, therefore, I respectfully submit some info for your consideration. This information is all over the internet and in books at SMU and Bonham, Texas.)
Charity Morris married Mabel Gilbert about 1820 in Dickson County, Tennessee. Before they moved from Tennesee, she bore one daughter and six sons. They settled in Fannin County, Texas in 1837. Six more children were born in Texas.
Charity's wisdom and bravey dealing with the Indians in the area is documented in area history. She was the first white woman to set foot on Dallas soil. Her son, Morris, was the first white child born in Dallas in 1842. Her daugher Hettie was the first white child born in Wichita County.
This wonderful woman is a Texas pioneer who brought honor to the Gilbert name and left a long line of descendants to carry on her legacy.
Hettie's Mother was Mabel's second wife, Rachel Gibbs Albright Freeman. They were married in the same year as Charity's death, 1854. [The marriage record reports a date of 18 December 1855.] Hettie was born in 1860.
