  In the 1880 census, the child matching Mary F of 1870 is reported as Francis [sic] M.  From common name forms in this region and era, we can conclude that her given name was Mary Frances, and by 1880, she was being called Frances.  This switching of names and initials to put the preferred name first is a common pattern in the 1800s and early 1900s.
