A genealogy or two tell us that Rachel is Rachel McSwain, daughter of Neill and Katherine McSwain. But Neill appears to be in a different line of McSwains, from Virginia. Our Rachel is the daughter of Hugh Kerr McSwain, son of James McSwain and Rachel Higgins.

Several genealogies report that John died on 26 July. But his grave in Virginia indicates he died on 20 July 1862. This is also the date his Civil War military records report he was "mustered out" of the army. (This is the term normally used when someone finishes their services and are honorably released!) It appears that somewhere along the way someone has miscopied the date of 20 July 1862 as 26 July 1862 and lots of people copied that.
