Barrett Chambers HAYES
History of Baxter Co. Arkansas: Barrett Chambers Hayes was born in 1846 in Habersham Co. Ga. B. C. Hayes was drafted at age 16 in the Civil War. He was a prisoner of war at Elmira. New York. He told his son W. J. that he would have starved to death, but he was allowed to whittle small wooden picture frames to sell to vistors at the prison. He contracted dysentery from lack of food and never completely recovered. He died of the disease in 1912. He married Harriet Elizabeth Deaton in 1870 in Habersham Co. GA.
They had eight children, including a set of twins. She died in 1886. He married Martha Baker in 1888. They had seven children, including one set of twins. B. C. and Harriet came to Baxter Co. in 1874 in an ox wagon with his father, William, and other families. He and Harriet went back to South Carolina about 1879 and returned to Baxter Co. in 1886. B. C. was a farmer. He was called Squire and was a justice of the peace at Gassville. He, Harriet and Martha Hayes are all buried at Gassville.
