In 1900, we find Manuel Harvey Criswell living in the household of Phillip K McSwain. He goes by Harvey. About 3-4 years later, Harvey will marry a niece of Phillip, Callie McSwain, sister of Wiley Carew McSwain. In 1900 Wiley is a single head of household, taking care of younger siblings, including Carrie, after their parents George and Harriet have passed away.

Criswell, Harvey Boarder W M Jan 1876 24 Single MS VA AL Farm Laborer
The birth date in this census is January 1876, but his gravestone, which has only the year of birth, says 1875. This is consistent with the age reported in the 1880 census, when in the June census he was 5 years old. It appears that he was born in 1875 instead of 1876. This type of error is common in the 1900 census.
By 1910, Harvey and Callie are married and have three children.

Manuel Harvey's first name in this census is terribly scrawled and actually would be indecipherable by anyone who did not know what to expect. Knowing his two names, it is discernible that the enumerator meant to write Emanuel H.
In this census, the birth state of Harvey's father has changed from North Carolina in 1900 to South Carolina. In 1920, the birth state of his father was also reported as South Carolina. Also in 1930, there was no state of birth given for his mother, whereas Alabama had been previously reported.
Gladys Dempsey shown here as Harvey's niece, is Gladys Lucille McSwain, daughter of Wiley Carew McSwain, Callie D Criswell's brother. Linnie (spelled Leenie here), Gladys' husband, is thus shown as the nephew-in-law. They been married just about one year.
