In 1896, Essie's grandmather Emily Meece applied for Choctaw citizenship when the Dawes Commission was trying to create a citizenship roll for the Nations.
Dawes Commission Index, 1896
Case #67
Emily Quaid
Choctaw Tribe
Emily's application was denied. In 1896, and again in 1901, Essie's father Thomas, Emily's son, applied for citizenship in the Choctaw Nation, along with several of his children. This application was also rejected. The primary reason was probably that no blood quantum for either Emily or her children or Thomas' children was known.
