• Some genealogies name him Martin Lee Arthur van Buren Smith.  I have not seen records with this actual name.  Further discussoin on this evoked soe commentary from a Smith researcher and dependent.  The source of the full name is another cousin who was Mart's niece.
  
  "I wasn't around my Dad's family growing up and he [Mart] was deceased when I got in touch with the family.  I was given his full name by Brenda Hicks, who is his brother Enoch Smith's granddaughter.   I have no documentation for the full name.  He even used an alias on the 1930 census O L Smith, and on his daughters Flossie Smith his name is listed as Ohin? L Smith.  He and his brothers were always in trouble with the law and they were moonshiners. His brother Carter was convicted of murder, sent to prison and escaped, the whole family fled Georgia at the time.  Brenda did say the Van Buren part was the name of a family that lived down the street from them and she liked it."

  Mart's WWI registration reports his birth date as September 1893, but the birth date in other records and on his grave is 25 October 1893.  He was born in Token Rock, Georgia.

  Funeral Arrangements are pending for Mart Smith, 78, who died this morning [12 January 1972] in an Okmulgee hospital.  He resided at 407 E Division, Henryetta.
  He was born October 25, 1893 in Georgia.
  Survivors include:  his wife, Susie, of the home; two daughters, Flossie Smith, Henryetta and Alice Hughes, Henderson, Kentucky; three sons, Andy Smith, Henryetta, Treman Smith, Henryetta, Leman Ketchikan, Alaska; one sister, Florence Smith, Pauls Valley; seven brothers, Eif, William, Harv, Zak, Enic, Ed, and Rob Smith; 19 grand children; and five great grand children.
