Notes
- Ola's name in Social Security records is Olie, but his name on his grave and his Texas death record is Ola. One city directory spells the name Ollie, which is the name he used in the name of his company in the 1947 directory, if they printed it correctly. On some official records, the spelling Olie is found, and I see that several genealogies also use this spelling.
His name is spelled Olie on his WWII draft registration and his Social Security records. This made it seem like the proper one to use. But he had signed the WWII card only with his initials, as O C Whitaker, leaving some doubt. Then I found the WWI draft registration in which his actual signature is Ola Whitaker. This is most likely the original given name. I have not been able to find his birth record to confirm how his name was registered at that time.
I will follow this as more definitive. The SS records tend also to use the more formal names, though that is not totally consistent. Since SS in this case has Ola that supports the earlier WWI record. The 1920, 1930 and 1940 censuses also report his name as Ola, meaning this is likely how he gave it to them.
It is quite likely that he later did switch to use the more masculine Ollie, as found on his business and office name reported in the City Directory. I note that this information would have come direct form him, while the WWII draft card is all typed, indicating it was entered by a clerk after Ollie stated the name orally.

I find it interesting that Ola is reported as single, since his wife Naomi did not die until 1987. I have found no information about them being divorced, and they are buried in a joint grave.
