Notes
- In the 1900 census his name is transcribed by Ancestry.com as Holden Williams. Most genealogies have taken this and other Ancestry transcription errors at face value without actually analyzing the name themselves.
The name is muddled because of the infuriating pattern of the tally figuring directly over the name of the head of the household. The darker strokes of the name itself looks to me more like Nicholas. This is also how at least one genealogy reports his name. There is a matching grave in Shiloh Cemetery, where his wife is buried, in the name of Nicholas Williams. The gravestones have matching inscriptions: "Mother" and "Father." On his wife's death certificate, his name appears to be Mr N Williams, matching the name Nicholas.

In his wife's death information, his name is transcribed by Ancestry.com as M N Williams, but it looks like Mr N Williams. This name is confirmed in his own death record, with the name again as simply Nicholas Williams. I have not found any record with a middle name. He died in Asheville, North Carolina, apparently at his son David's home. His residence is still reported as Jefferson City, Tennessee, where he was buried.

Though the death certificate reports that he was to be buried in Jefferson City, Tennesee, his grave is in Shiloh Cemetry, whose official address is in Rutledge. Rutledge is in Grainger County, Tennesee, where his wife died in 1939 and was also buried. But Grainger County is just north of Jefferson County. And the cemetery is only a few miles outside Jefferson City, which is near the county line.
