  • I begin the history of this family with Charles Newton Hendron, father of Charles Robert Hendron Sr.  I find the first public record of him in Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana, where we learn that he was born.  He is with his parents at home at age 22 in the 1910 census.  His father Benjamin is a shoemaker, working in the home, while Charles is a Painter, working odd jobs.

    In 1917, Charles N is a Foreman for the United states Quartermaster Depot in Jeffersonville.  We learn this from his WWI Draft Registrationcard.  He is registered simply as Charles Hendron.  His birth day there is given as 24 August 1889.  In the WWII Draft Registration, his birthday is reported as 24 August 1888.  His place of birth Jeffersonville, Indiana.  Eyes dark brown, Hair black.  Signed Chas Hendron.

    Charles Robert is listed with his family in the 1920 census in Jeffersonville, Indiana.

    Susanne Briggs, in email information on the Hendron family, comments that Charles Robert (Charlie) was very close to his sister Jane.

    From Charles N's Draft Registration for WWII, I discovered his middlename:
    Charles Newton Hendron, Birth 24 Aug 1888, Jeffersonville, Indiana, Residence: Clark, Indiana; Occupation, Fireman; residence 428 Walnut St.
    This tells us they are still living in the same section of Jeffersonville where they were in 1930.  That census does not give the name of the street where they live, but they are between entries for Walnut St and Chestnut St.
    I have not learned when Charles Robert moved to California, or whether his whole family moved.  I have not found Charles Robert's WWII Draft Registration record.

    I have not found a death registry entry for Charles Robert Hendron, Sr., but there is a burial entry in Goleta Cemetery.  I have no date ofdeath.

    Charles' granddaughter says, "The story we were told about my grandfather is that he was found dead in a hotel room in Las Vegas."  Charles' former daughter-in-law Susanne Briggs adds that he died of a heart attack.  Susanne refers to him as Charlie.
