In 1242 John L'Estrange, justice of Chester, had the custody of the lands late of John Fitz-Alan, and possibly in that capacity was returned in 1242-3 as holding 1 fee in Drayton of the earl of Arundel. In 1244 the service of the same John L'Estrange of 1/2 fee in Drayton was assigned to the pourparty of Roger de Somery and Nichola his wife...
[Honors and Knights' Fees, vol. III, as quoted by John P. Ravilious <Therav3aol.com, 27 Jan 2003]
John Ravilious asserts that John le Strange acquired his rights to Drayton, Sussex in connection with his marriage to Lucy de Tregoz. CP states that the estates of Ebles le Strange passed on his death (1335) to his nephew Roger (Vol. XII/I, p. 341).
The tenure and inheritance of Drayton Manor is very tangled. It appears that at the level where the manor was held of the earl of Arundel and his heirs (Roger de Somery and later), the tenure passed to John LeStrange to Hamon Le Strange to Bartholomew de Badlesmere.
[John Ravilious]
Lord marcher, third in descent from Roland le Strange (who occurs asa witness in 1112), held extensive estates in Shropshire and Norfolk, including Knokyn in the former, and Hunstanton in the latter county. He served in 1214 under King John in Poitou, and between 1233 and 1240was successively appointed by Henry III constable of the castles of Montgomery, Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth, and Chester. He spent a long life in defending the Welsh border as a lord marcher, and during the rebellion of Simon de Montfort, stood fast to the crown. One of his daughters, Hawise, married Griffin, prince of Powys; his younger son, Hamon, accompanied Prince Edward on the crusade of 1270, and in 1272 married at Cyprus Isabella d'Ibelin, widow of Hugh II, king of Cyprus. Anotherson, Robert, was ancestor of the Lords Strange of Blackmere. John le Strange died in 1269, and was succeeded by his son John (d. 1275), whoby his marriage with Joan de Someri, co-heiress of Hugh de Albini, earl of Arundel, added much to the influence and wealth of his family. His grandson, John, sixth baron of Knokyn (d. 13111), gave in 1310 his manor of Hunstanton to his younger brother, Hamon, from whom the Norfolk Le Stranges come in direct descent.
