Married Hawyse LE STRANGE.1

The dates given for the marriage of Griffith ap Wennonwen to Hawyse Le Strange would mean she was married at age 8.  This seems strange, but child marriage was a common pattern among the Norman and other nobility in the Middle Ages.  Few details are available in sources, so I am following this information from the Tudorplace genealogy, until I find more firm information that provides a better date or additional information to clarify this situation.

Notes

  • Sources differ on the wives of Griffith and his son Owen, Prince of Powys.  It appears that Hawyse Le Strange, daughter of John IV Le Strange of Knockin, married Griffith (Welsh spelling Gruffydd), and their son Owen married Joan Corbett.  The Tudorplace genealogy of Corbett, LeStrange and Plantagenet reports that Hawyse had a sister Catherine not reported by some other sources.  This Catherine seems to be the wife of Robert Corbet (born abt 1223) and the mother of Joan Corbet, whomarried Owen ap Griffith de la Pole, Prince of Powys.

Some sources include the de la Pole on the names of the children only, while I have found one source that includes this for the father Griffith.  de la Pole is found as de la Poole in some sources.
