He wenbt by Joe, and even his Social Security records have Joe rather than Joseph.. Matbe the name Jefferson in the 1920 census was an inadvertent error by the emumerator since the name Jefferson Davis was such a common name in that region of the country, he just wrote that by the time he put it on paper.
