  • The Find a Grave memorial of William B Barnette reports his parents asJohn Barnette and Emily Caroline Foster.  But in the 1910 census,William and his wife Ida were enumerated with their children in PolkCounty, North Carolina.  In their household was his mother, namedMarget (Margaret).  Should the enumerator have reported Margaret asthe Stepmother?  At that point in life, they probably did not makethat distinction in reporting the relationship.

I have not been able to reconcile all the dates and relationshipsequences.  John Barnette died before 1910 and was survived by hiswife Margaret who died before 1920.  But Emily Foster Barnett Beachlived until 1938.  And her husband was William Beach until he died in1930.  He died in 1930.  William B Barnett is reported in Emily'sobituary as one of the sons surviving her.

Was Emily married to John Barnett before he married Margaret and thenJohn and Emily divorced.  Maybe, but that was quite unusual for thatera.  Another possibility also stretches credulity.    But William wasborn in 1872.  And Emily was born about 1856,  To be William's birthmother, she would have had to have William when she was bout 16, andmarried at about age 15.  That is possible, but how likely?

Genealogies list a large number of Beach children, ranging in birthdates from 1880 to 1895 (three with unreported birth dates).  Assumingthis is the total list, Emily married William Beach about 1880.  Herage then would be about age 18, a common age of marriage.  Severalgenealogies report only William Beach as her husband.  But herobituary reports William Barnett as one surviving son.  William is theonly child surnamed Barnett reported for Emily.

The date of birth on their daughter Mattie's grave is 1879, thoughsome genealogies report her birth in 1881.  Genealogy lists of herchildren report 1st child was Edward, b 1879, then Bessie in 1880,then Mattie.  So she must have married William Beach about 1878.
