In 1920, Vernie F, along with her older brother John W, is missing from the enumeration of the household of Maggie McSwain Rowland, her widowed mother.  Vernie should be about 12.  I have not yet found her or John W in the Arkansas County 1920 census.  He may have died before that census.

A great granddaughter of Bedford and Maggie reports that John died before adulthood.  Since Vernie is missing from Shirley's list of children, she must have also died before the 1920 census.  At first I suspected they died of the Flu epidemic ("Spanish" Flu) that took so many others at that time.  But their names do not appear in the Arkansas Death Index, which did not begin until 1914.  So it is possible they died before 1914, but their deaths may not have been recorded officially.  This was the case with many in that era, especially children.

Vernie may be buried in the Rowland Family Cemetery on the old Rowland farm in Ethel, where Vernie's sistere Sarah Elizabeth and her husband James Jones lived later.

Death 1914 Ethel, Arkansas County, Arkansas, USA

It is likely that Vernie Rowland was buried in the Rowland Family Cemetery on the family farm in Ethel, Arkansas. She and her brother John, who was born about 1906 or 1907, appear to have died in the influenza epidemic. It must have been before 1914, because they do not appear in the Arkansas Death Index, which began in 1914. And sometimes children's deaths, especially in epidemics, were not recorded officially. Dates are approximate.
