Revolutionary War Pension Records
Mary Lane
Husband Tidence
Pension Office Knoxville, Tennessee
Pension $10 half yearly
Begin 4th March 1836 (year pensions began)
[Note, Tidence did not die until 1841]
(All payments on this page began 1836, except for two veterans, which began in 1839)
Payment records show payment until 1849
Another record chart clarifies that the pensions were begun as payments to the veterans, then continued to their widows. This record card reports Tidence's date of death. Information on several other Lane men is included on the same page.
Tidence Lane, Private
$10 monthly allowance
Twice-yearly payment records until September 1840.
Died 25 Janry 1841 Paid out 1938
Note that this initial record reports the Tidence received $10 a month, while the record of Mary's widow pension reports payments from March 1836 (while Tidence was living) at the rate of $10 half yearly. Additionally, note that the record for Tidence reports after his death "Pd out 6 Apl 1838." It is not clear what this means, since Mary's record reports her payments continued until 1849. Perhaps there was a one-time death payment the amount of which is not recorded here.
Tidence's payment record reports payments on twice-yearly basis, but the record is unclear. THe number entered each March and September for Tidence and most others is 4. Does this means 4 monthly payments of $10? What about the other 4 months of the year? Other veterans' record show 1,2 or 3 in each March or September report. From 1834, Tidence's March or September entries vary between 4, 3, 2 and 1.
In 1850, the Widow Mary Lane is living in the home of her son Isaac, age 63. ELiza Lain here is repsorted by genealogies as the third wife of Isaac, Eliza Robinson, whose first child here was Mahala. Some of the chidlren named Lain here appear to match children in the 18609 census whose last name is Robinson. These were likely Eliza's children form hrr first marriage whose surnames were incorrectly recorded in 1850.
