Notes

  • Lucy Belle is reported as Bell Fitzzpatrick in the 1860 census.

1860 Federal Census, Tishomingo County, Mississippi, 10 August, PO Corinth, page 181, Hse/Fam #1185
Ellen Fitzpatrick 37 F No Occupation No Real Estate value or Personal Wealth Rptd born Alabama Cannot read or write [b abt 1823]

    Laura Fitzpatrick 10 F born Arkansas [b abt 1850]
    Bell Fitzpatrick 5 F born Arkansas [b abt 1855]
    Amelia Fitzpatrick 3 F born Arkansas [b abt 1857]

Lucy is Bell Winter in the 1870 census with her stepfather.  In 1880, she is Lucy B, indicating she was Lucy Bell (Belle).  Some genealogies have her name as Louise Bell Conrad.  Lucy was apparently a nickname for Louise.

In the 1870 census, Lucy & her siblings' last name is Winter.  Besides genealogies, her death certificate reports the name of her father as Fitzpatrick.  Genealogies (with no documentation) give his name as Granville Kirkpatrick.  However, a Tennessee marriage record for Granville Fitzpatrick and Ellen Bradley seem to match the family.

Genealogies giving the name as Fitzpatrick even attach the Fiotzpatrick records.  These two names are often confused by people, but the record seems so full and so consistent, lacking any other records to the contrary, Fitzpatrick it is.

These facts all present a picture of the first marriage and family of the Helen Winter we see as the wife of Stephen Winter in 1870.  It is not clear if the Fitzpatrick children were formally adopted or the enumerator just gave them Stephen's name in the census.

Some genealogies report her birth state as Tennessee in 1870, but in 1880 it was Arkansas, like her sister Susan's report in 1870.

Her marriage record has her name as Lucy Belle Fitzpatrick.

    Lucy B Fitzpatrick

In 1880, Belle is reported under the name Lucy B Conrad.  This indicates her name was Lucy Belle.  She is reported as single, but that may mean widowed here, since she also has a daughter name Lula P Conrad, reported as the step granddaughter of Stephen.  Genealolgies report Lula's middle nmae as Pearl.

1880 Federal Census, Grayson County, Texas, 1 July, Whitesboro, District 7, page 44, Hse/Fam #407

But the 1900 census shows her with her husband David S Conrad, and the strange thing is it reportsx they have been married 26 years.  This would mean they married abotu 1874, which would fit with Lula's reported age of 4 in 1880, or born about 1876  It is not clear where David Conrad was in 1880, when he wife and daughter were with his fatheer-in-law and his wife Lucy Belle was reported as Single.

By 1910 Lucy appears with what seem to be her two Fitzpatrick sisters, living together in Foard County, Texas, farther west on the Pease River, about 200 miles west of Grayson County.

    Conrad, Belle Sister-in-law F W 54 Widow 2 children/2 living AR AL AL No Occup [b abt 1856]

Lucy Conrad matches her name in the 1880 census and her age in 1870 and 1880.  Amelia Garlinghouse matches the 1870 record for Ameila Winter (Kirkjpatrick).  But the oldest sister in mentioned in the 1870 census was named Susan, and reported as 23 years old, or born about 1947.  Laura Davenporrt's birth state matches Susan Winter (Kirkpatrick) in 1870, but the birth year is 1854, 7 years younger.  Ages are often incorrect in census for various reasons.  Laura is likely Susan.
