  • Sources report that James McSwain, born 25 February 1842, was marriedthree times.  One wife was Susannah Hopper.  Some sources do not haveall three wives of James McSwain.David Holden has a carefulreconstruction of the McSwain lineage, and though he does not reporthis sources and documentation, which I normally require, his work issound.  We have conferred on our McSwain-Weathers research.

Some genealogies have only two wives, leaving out Susannah Hopper, reporting only Sarah Bostic and Rachel Riggins,  David reports threewives, but they are Rachel Riggins, Susannah Hopper and Margaret Love, the latter whom I have not yet documented.

A memorial for James the father of Berry and Hugh Kerr McSwain hassome different details from what we have for James who married RachelRiggins and is reported as the mother of these two sons.  Thismemorial also reports different parents for James than other sources. It may be that two different James McSwains have been confused.

The memorial reports two wives for James McSwain born 1879.  Thesecond wife here is Susannah Hopper.  In the 1850 census above hiswife was Sarah (Sallie) Bostic, who is not mentioned in the memorial. We will be watching these factors to clarify this family relationshipstructure.

A marriage record also reports the husband of Sally Bostic as WilliamMcSwain, a different husband from the 1850 record above, unless thishusband was named William James or James William McSwain.
